i have this odd buddhist serenity thing going on

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

it's like i've contributed to the consumerist ecosystem finally

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've actually felt that way more than once with a lot of stuff; getting rid of a lot of never-read books in the last move was actually kinda freeing, and I've been thinking of doing a further cull here later this year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

well i'm doing it because i'm moving, and because it's been sitting in my parents attic, accumulating dust, for over two years now. i find myself less and less interested in owning stuff these days.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Strongo! I'm in the middle of doing the same thing, only I've bamboozled myself into thinking that I can eBay the crap first

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha chris OTM

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i find myself less and less interested in owning stuff these days.

More than once last year I found myself imagining what it would be like to have almost nothing of what I do have around here -- and the feeling was strangely peaceful. As it stands, most of what I do read I check out from the library, so I think most of the books here are for sentimental value now. The CDs could all be mp3d too. And I don't have any kids, so who the heck would it all go anyway? etc. etc.

I'm actually glad that budget and other reasons has meant I spend far less on 'stuff' in general than I used to. It's handy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha anything valuable i own was sold long ago, any records or cd's i'd wanna get rid of are scratched to shit or covered in coffee or cat fluff or gunk

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ATTN JON WILLIAMS AND IAN JOHNSON: SEVERAL HUNDRED HARDCORE AND NOISE RECORDS JUST ESCAPED INTO THE SALVATION ARMY SYSTEM OF THE GREATER NORTHEAST

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been thinking of doing a further cull here later this year.
When you get rid of those rare CDs, Ned, keep in mind that I'm a branch of a well-known charitable organization.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

lately i'd rather spend my money on cool experiences (travel, meals at great restaurants, even just getting drunk) than on useless crap that clutters up my life.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

jody otm!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ownership is for squares

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Jess! Now shave off 2/3 of your body hair and move to Fiji!

rainy (rainy), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't help toque-wearing back-bacon-bolting Molson's-guzzling lazy-welfare-state-coddled bums. Dig out of your goddamn igloo and go hunt some moose to barter for CDs, you savage.

Actually, excuse me, I thought I was talking to Don Cherry.

lately i'd rather spend my money on cool experiences (travel, meals at great restaurants, even just getting drunk) than on useless crap that clutters up my life.

Woohoo! And indeed, my latest indulgences -- having calculated my taxes and merrily discovered that I owe fairly little in comparison to what I expected -- will be on trips to San Francisco in a month and to Venezuela in July. Rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The only actual CD(s) I've bought so far this year -- the Cure box set. Because, you know, I have to.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

To be a drone, I concur with all of the above.

Once my break starts, I will be selling off a lot of these CDs I have. The problem is I keep on buying these bigger black wax disc things... but, i mean, i can't pass up a cut out of Hawkwind's "Space Ritual" 2LP.. (which happened last night at my local record store) There are some things I must HAAAAVE. (That word is evil but sounds really good sometimes.)

(and I will be getting the Cure reissues too... *sniff*.. what am I doing?)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

if i shaved off 2/3 of my body hair i might disappear entirely

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and I will be getting the Cure reissues too... *sniff*.. what am I doing?

Following the course of wisdom. In my case, I'll be using Amoeba gift certificates for them = even wiser!

I still buy CDRs, of course.

Today I got the second half of a spectacular Folio Society set of The Arabian Nights, so I know I would never get rid of all my books, o' course. I mean, the Tolkien shrine ain't going anywhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And on the travel tip this spring, I definitely am thinking..

May...
Montreal, Quebec, Canada for MUTEK ("Esskyooz me, Suz anybaudy here haz a verking maus?")

Late May or Mid June or anytime in between...
NYC --> London --> Reykjavik/Iceland --> NYC --> (back home)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Donut Bitch does not know this yet, but I am travelling in his luggage.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

IMP

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

FAMILIAR

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The correct term is 'homoculous.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The homoculous has seriously disturbed the buddhist serenity of this thread. out.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I love buying records. Record stores are strangely calming. Clothing stores hurt my soul though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. I was actually at a clothing store for the first time in months today (had to get some new shorts now that the weather was getting better).

No question record stores are beautifully calming. Even better if you have the money to spend in them, which is not always the case now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are you moving?

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i love stuff. i wish i could buy some more stuff. i can't as i have been very very broke for the last 18 months and there is no sign of not being broke in the near future.
and maybe that is why i want to buy some stuff. i bought 4 cds at 99c aust each yesterday. it blew my budget but it made me a bit happier.

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i am just moving to a new house in town, but my mom is also moving, so i'm helping her clean shit out and figured i might as well purge while i was at it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

and now i have time for my more philosophical persuits

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ned folio society? no no no no.
evil folio.

pete s, Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If I poured a glass of water in my ear where would it go?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dubplatestyle: did you see the cover of the source (i think) with all the mug shots and "are rappers the new target of the criminal justice system"?
ETHANP23: is benzino the target of any hiphop consumers?
Dubplatestyle: like mystikals on there and all i can think is: "yeah maybe they're the target of the criminal justice system because they keep filming rapes and peeing on 14 year old girls!"
Dubplatestyle: i have a feeling if john mayer was filmed pissing on amanda bynes or some shit he'd be going to jail too!
ETHANP23: why did you not humor me and say hilary duff
ETHANP23: i wd piss all over that shit
Dubplatestyle: :-O
Dubplatestyle: i am appalled
ETHANP23: haha whatever
Dubplatestyle: okay i wouldnt pee on it but i'd definitely do something illegal
ETHANP23: yeah i'd jaywalk w that bitch anytime
ETHANP23: we'd be throwin litter out the ride, 'five hundred bucks my ass!! fuck you arkansas highway dept!!'
Dubplatestyle: "look at this baby, i'm cuttin the shit out of this matress tag"
ETHANP23: 'see this cd-r? all mp3s'
Dubplatestyle: "this is addressed to my moms but I'M opening it"
ETHANP23: 'check it, green... green.... yellow... RED!!'
Dubplatestyle: "i am TOTALLY going more than 55 right now"
ETHANP23: 'yeah that sign said only one refill per customer, whats homeboy gonna do abt it??'
Dubplatestyle: "i'm just gonna let this bitch idle double parked while i drop off my movies at blockbuster and fuck the man"
ETHANP23: sorry you win
ETHANP23: that deserves a paste into some thread, from the mystikal comment to blockbuster
ETHANP23: just randomly paste it somewhere
Dubplatestyle:
Dubplatestyle: haha i am as appalled as you are
toffee sock: haha shut up i know you wd spit in her eye while ethan ws defacating in her shoes

ETHANP23: 'shoes'??
Dubplatestyle: it must be some australian thing

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

!

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 20 March 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn that was some philosophical shit!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ned folio society? no no no no.
evil folio.

Er? If they create the books from the bones of genocide victims around the world or something, let me know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

some days i feel like selling every record and CD i own except for a small handful. it would be at once cathartic and extremely painful, like bringing oneself to orgasm with a broken arm, wrist and hand.

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that would depend on whether the bones are poking through the skin, wouldn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF is the only sane person on this thread, the whole purpose of life is to ACCUMULATE CDs AND LPs and once upon a time cassettes but then the purpose of life mercifully streamlined itself

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok so maybe i was needlessly rockist; i just think they're horrible artifacts, the 'iuxurious' fuzzy binding, the awful artwork, the painfully thick paper sheets. i know they do comission good intros now and then.... but i do hate them. i think they're sort of the super SACD/gold 24-bit cds of the book world. Except i'll concede some of their editions do have an individual character.

pete s, Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that's 'luxurious'

pete s, Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ssssh J0hn if they get rid of their stuff we can buy their records and then we will have more.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'iuxurious' fuzzy binding, the awful artwork, the painfully thick paper sheets

But I like all that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I go for so long without buying ANYthing---even clothes---that eventually it'll just hit me: "oh wow...I could just hand that fella over there some paper and like totally take this home with me...what a cool concept."

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 March 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You're all going to have terrible mid-life crises and spend fortunes on ebay tracking down what you've given away to recapture "lost youth".

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 20 March 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I found an old Teenbeat comp in the Oxfam record shop, but they couldn't find the CD :(

I can't get rid of anything.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 20 March 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Six knows what he's talkin' about - what I wouldn't give for the complete run of pre-First & Last & Always Sisters of Mercy 12"s I once had which I got rid of in a rather less pronounced state of enlightenment than strongo's

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I made $42 bucks last weekend selling DVDs and CDs, and immediately turned around and bought MTA2 Screwed and Chopped, so a winner was me!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That's always a good idea. I was too lazy to clear everything out before I moved, so I have been taking stuff to the local Salvation Army every couple of weeks or so.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be an anthony thread.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I had actually thought that too!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 20 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

go in peace, my sons.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

while I think this rocks and have similar plans myself when I move, I always worry that its a short jump from something like this to being the first guy in shorts when in winter is barely over. But odds are that guy just don't give a shiiiiiit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 March 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i've thought this too before, when i was living away from here across the pond for a few months i was delighted about how few possessions i needed; in fact every time i go away i realize what a burden all my accumulated shit can be, but then i come back and all that stuff attaches itself to me again.

oh and donut bitch, if you do come in for pootek, you are going to let me know ya?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 20 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to get rid of all my CDs (and a bunch of DVDs - why did I buy the crap-looking Smiths video collection?), but Ebaying them would be a long and arduous process and I'd be insulted by any CD store offer ("700 CDs and you'll give me WHAT?").

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 20 March 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You're all going to have terrible mid-life crises and spend fortunes on ebay tracking down what you've given away to recapture "lost youth".

This is OTM, but for the most part, you'll be glad to have sold back at least 75% of the stuff you did sell in one's "younger" years, because chances are you truly won't care for that majority, and thankfully won't have it around to get in your way.

If it means having to go and re-buy the few things you want back in your "older" years, it's a smaller price to pay than the relief you gave yourself selling all that shit off in the first place.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody would appreciate my "stuff" more than me. 'Sides, people are ungrateful and GREED IS GOOD.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ever did this, I'd need to buy a buncha cardboard boxes and draw fake "stuff" on it, because I hate sleeping in big empty rooms

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I really don't want to know what that says about me, either.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If you google "clutter" or "declutter" you'll see a lot of articles and books were written about letting go of 'stuff'. I don't want to accumulate too much stuff in the long run so I appreciated that other people are sharing their experiences about this ordinary problem.

Here's an ok article "Declutter 101: Basic Declutter Strategies"

there's also newsgroup alt.recovery.clutter : a place where people who have cluttering as a problem can discuss methods of dealing with it.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Sunday, 21 March 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i need more clutter in my life, i like it. but getting rid of a ton of shit is a great feeling, like jumping into a cold pond.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 21 March 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

watch ebay and chicago area record shops fellers because as soon as i get home i'm getting rid of at least 500 CDs yahoo

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 21 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the really sad fact is that i have collected so much garbage over the years that it really doesnt feel like i'm any less cluttered. and i have paired it down to the bare essentials. (and then i just remembered all the stuff i have waiting in olympia to be sent back to me...)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 21 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

on the one hand the idea of being without a lot of stuff is enormously appealing

on the other, i brought about 150 cds with me to france and i find myself all the time wanting to hear a particular song and not having the record handy

although perhaps this builds character or something

i'd like to get rid of a lot of my books but people don't pay shit for books :(

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 21 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

a girl I know wanted to volunteer to do some work for the salvation army but they said she couldn't because she wasn't a christian and maybe because she drinks and smokes.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 21 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist you should donate your unwanted books to a books-for-prisoners program, there are lots of them out there i'm sure.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 21 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)
