Supermarket Muzak

generally every time I go to the supermarket there is at least one classic track I have to sing along with, be it Cliff Richard's pegging anthem Devil Woman or Original Sin by INXS. They just keep trucking 'em out. So, does anyone have any favourite shopping tunes and supermarkets/ stores they rate highly for music?

Also, this could extend to advertising jingles that haunt you. Is there any product song you just can't get out of your head? Mentos is pretty bad, but I can't think of any childhood ones offhand...

Born To Be Wild followed by Jive Talkin (both heavily muzikated) back to back while shopping 24hour store in the middle of the night.

Here in Dunedin they just play the non stop hits, not actually elevator versions of them. I think a few songs might be improved by being muzaketed. In particular are you going to go my way, by lenny kravitz. sounds great on the moog.

As I've said here once or twice before, I love it when the supermarket I regularly go to has on its mix of Eighties music, because they don't just play the Big Overplayed Hits but rather have a mix of really good Eighties songs, from Joboxers' "Just Got Lucky" to Q-Feel's "Dancing In Heaven". In fact, the most perfect grocery shopping experience I ever had happened when I ended up enraptured by Culture Club's "Time (Clock of the Heart)" followed immediately by the aforementioned Q-Feel song. It was a real thrill for this '80s fanatic, that's for sure.

If I knew I could get away with it, I'd love to bring in my MP3 personal CD player whenever I go grocery shopping and listen to whatever MP3s I want to listen to.

no, nmothing that exotic here, just a blend of the well known and sometimes well loved. We also get to hear top forty numbers, usually dating from a few years ago so they can be judged palatable for public consumption. Leann Rimes anyone? Who programmes the play list for supermarkets anyway? My flatmate works at one so I should ask him.

While on the topic of dodgy music, dunedin casino, which touts itself as NZ's premier boutique casino - translate, small, crappy, low stakes and gilded - has an interesting approach to background noise. Imagine if you will a golden, mirrored edifice with axminster style carpets and chandaliers, and then play the bloodhound gang in your mind at the same time.
