Inspired by James & I swapping intellectual spit on the shagadelic UK thread. What's YOUR novel going to be about?

PS - SEVEN DAYS until the deadline to sign up has passed. Get thee HERE!

David Raposa, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wasnt going to enter. I still might though.

It'll be about meeeeeeeeeeeee.

I'll never get around to this actually who am I kidding.

Ronan, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, get off yer slack ass and WRITE!

David Raposa, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

These are the names of my main characters...

Dexter = the corpse
'BB' Takahashi = Art school student
E. Johnston = Drummer in bad thrash metal band
Professor Crumbs = Lecturer in line drawing

BB and E and an as yet unnamed character discover naked guy in freezer. BB loses her diary at the crime scene and subsequently becomes the prime suspect. Dexter turns out to be a world famous chef.

I have a serious amount of character and plot development to do.

I'm not good enough. At writing anything.

I'm a mud thrower, I'm not even going to be a good journalist I've decided, I'm just great at slating things. Not even in a critically good way, I'm starting a magazine in the spirit of the onion or something but more cutting and thats my life right there.

Until I grow up someday...........and then we'll see

Ronan, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think, I'll be happy if I get to 25,000 words. I may have to go for a Kerouac free for all somewhere in the middle...perhaps a drugged out dream sequence.

NanoRimo site is too boring for me. Can I use one of my old novels? Sketched a basic crime novel about a girl who collects skulls last week (she was the heroine - though it had a nice, verylong opening paragraph about the beauty of skulls followed by the reveal of a hole in the skull of the first victim). Have lost drunken notes on that one though so it might not have been very good. Odds on apparently.

If I wasn't off to Sri Lanka (where I hope to be one of Arthur C.Clarkes hundreds of ghost writers) I would either crank out Two Come Along At Once (bus driver comic crime novel) or The Lie Of Xerxes (deep and possibly impenetrable treatise on truth, life, death and astrology - but mainly a how to book on lying).

A Point Horror called 'The Bouncy Castle'. Tag line 'You'll Bounce...To Death!'

alix, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will be very disappointed if Alix does not now write this.

Mine is a shocking expose of the market research industry, obviously.

I have no idea what my novel is going to be about yet. My original idea was about how the smallest decisions can have disatrous consequences, where I'd start out with a fairly boring story that would have several inconsequential decision points. At each of thos decision points, I'd spin off a different story which leads to some unpleasant consequence for the main character. (Kind of like "Sliding Doors" on crystal meth.) This led to the "Sliders"/"The One"-tinged idea of a person bouncing between the analogues of himself in different dimensions while slowly going mad. Then I had an idea about a woman whose relatives, family and associates are all disappearing one by one because of a cosmic instability centered on her. The problem with either of these is that, while I'm shit-hot at coming up with concepts, doing plots is much more difficult. I have no idea how to fill in the blanks between the first page and the last page.

reading the site last night at 3 am left me confused. how do they know you start this thing as of nov. 1st? or, like pete, can i just sub some old microsoft word files strung together?

jess, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you're ONLY CHEATING YOURSELF! or something

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

See Cheat!!! thread below for why "You are only cheating yourself" is a vacuous concept. Great name for a book though "The Man Who Cheated On Himself".

Pete, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, Jess...I guess the aim is to start on Nov 1st...but like no one's going to. I have a weird section where one of Hanle y's threads get's mysteriously cut and pasted into my novel.

james, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not starting until the 1st.

Tom, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay for Tom!...I'm not going to do any typing til the 1st...

james, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I entered this thing because it sounded like a great idea and then I realised that I would have to write 1667 words a day. That's a lot of words, especially when you have a girlfriend who demands constant sex.

Sam, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Frankly it's a lot of words if you have a wrist demanding constant sex. Or an ILE demanding constant posting.

Tom, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe that preliminary planning is OK - outlining chapters, characters, salient plot points, etc. That's the way I'm approaching it, anyway. If I'm disqualified, then poo.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Posting to ILE always comes first.

james, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mine would work on many levels ... the actual setting of it would be totally removed from my own life, but it would have a deep semi- autobiographical core.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mine will be all about an internet bulletin board!!!

maura, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would plan it now but I want to finish 1000!

Tom, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Note to self: HIDE the Rollercoaster Tycoon CD-ROM for the month of November.
