weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what lies in store for everyone's favourite hot-headed-but-gifted 18 year old?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

uhh... catherine... uhh...lionel

, Monday, 22 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Gazza.

(I really, really wish the pic of Dunky Ferguson strangling a Leicester player in today's Guardian was available online.)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

do you mean that rooney will squander his talent with silliness?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen him play especially well for ages now, and never as well as he did leading up to that goal against Arsenal and on his England debut. How many goals has he scored this season?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't seen a full everton game in a while, but he's been in good scoring form the last few weeks (until then his goal tally was poor)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Definite classic when he was photographed licking that giant Chupa Chup last summer.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

rooney has scored 8 premiership goals this season (according to bbc). this is not great.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The same amount as Emile Heskey... (*red rag to a cabbage*)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. at very different stages in their development, but yes. so are you english folks happy for rooney to be a regular england striker?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got a better hair cut then Hume, my second favorite Canadian striker.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

He seems to do quite well for the national team. I can see him being enormously fat by the time he's 27 if he's not careful.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not all that, as I've been saying for a while. And comparing him to Heskey? well, he doesn't work nearly as well along the length of the pitch, indeed I'm more and more of the mind that Emile could solve the central defence problem.

And Rroney is certainly no Lee Presley (jeez, I hope those nasty agents/scallies) don't make a complete mess of him, Harchester need him even more now that Luke Davenport has a horror injury!)

chris (chris), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cabbage - the fatal flaw in your engaging EH as centrehalf pipedream is HE FALLS DOWN LIKE A SACK OF SPUDS IF ANYONE WITHIN 20 YARDS SO MUCH AS SNEEZES.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i just sold Ruud Van Nistelrooy and bought Rooney for my Fantasy League team - Rooney's entering his real form phase of the season i HOPE.

i'm not yet convinced of Rooney as a striker and saw him more in a Scholes/Gazza role - has to play just behind a striker for best results. this may or may not be the case in reality tho. i think from what he has shown so far he is somewhere between Scholes and Gazza in ability with the potential to eclipse them both (made a great start internationally at least in the same way the two others did).

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that's when he's up front, it's because all the blood rushes to his head. If you watch when he comes back for corners etc, he is far more composed, and his tackling is lionish

x-post about Lord Emile

chris (chris), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen him play especially well for ages now, and never as well as he did leading up to that goal against Arsenal and on his England debut.

He turns it on like that, in flashes, practically every game he plays. He's not consistently brilliant and is surrounded by varying shades of mediocrity at Everton (Yobo and Radzinski probably his most talented compadres, and there are occasionally signs that his intermittent partnership with Tomasz R will bloom into something special) - hence few goals and much frustration.

But still, I've been encouraged by his displays since Xmas and, if he features in all EFC's remaining fixtures (minus the one for which he'll be suspended), he'll ensure mid-table safety. There is no suggestion that his gifts have somehow deserted him post-fame - he just finds himself in a shambling, underperforming side this campaign (whither the well-oiled machine of 02-03? It wasn't all Li Tie's passing and Campbell's strength, was it?)

Whether his love of the Blues will prevail over his agent's love of cash remains to be seen. A good Euro2004 and we may lose him. I think the Great Clubs Of Europe would rather give him a couple more years with Drill Sergeant Moyes before whisking him away, the finished article at 20.

I've said before that I can't quite believe he starts England games, but he hasn't done badly, has he?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He's been coming off the bench a lot though this season though hasn't he? He seems to scare the shit out of defenders when he's fresh and they're knackered on the hour.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Dear

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That pic of Rooney and parents all coming out of the sea in the same position is awesome. It also proves that Rooney = Gazza. Especially in 10 years time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Calm down! Calm down!

I love the image of Big Kev reprimanding Wayne for badmouthing his ma. I think Uncle Eugene walked straight out of a rejected Frank Clark screenplay.

I find this all terribly endearing somehow.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Everton must be one of the ugliest sides in the Premiership; Rooney, Radzinksi, Graveson etc. That Chinese bird is pretty cute, I suppose.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The source went on: “All three of her boys told her to stop drinking. Wayne started the karaoke off by singing Why Does It Always Rain On Me? by Travis.

"But later his dad Wayne Snr got up and started singing Everton songs. He wanted Wayne to join him, but Wayne walked out in embarrassment.”

as in he wasn't embarrassed after singing "Why does it always rain on me" by Travis?!?!??!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, that picture. I feel bad for feeling bad. I hate Britain. Good old Wayne.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

He is going to be Lord Rooney of Goodison one day, whenj he brings home World Cup bacon.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like his parents have already had quite a lot of those world cup bacons.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Everton must be one of the ugliest sides in the Premiership; Rooney, Radzinksi, Graveson etc.

Tomasz R is gorgeous, you fool! Carsley is the less appealing of the slapheads and you were forgetting Franny Jugfers. I'm not sure whether this squad is any more grotesque than Joe Royle's Dogs Of War, before Kanchelskis gave them a makeover. I think the (lysergic) dandy axis relocated to Anfield some time in the 80s and stayed there. I think the rot set in with Geoff Nulty.

That Chinese bird is pretty cute, I suppose.

No argument there. With a broken wing at the mo'.

rooney to switch from everton to united on the day the clubs meet? rooney is providing splendid value for money this season despite not kicking a ball yet. a loose cannon, on and off the field.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Rooney AND David Moyes may both go to Newcastle... smells like BS to me, but you never know.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rooney for Newcastle player-manager!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole saga sums up everything that is repulsive about football today - 'player power', agents, advisors, no loyalty, two-faced/incompetent directors, tabloid filth...fuck the lot of them.

Why does he 'need to be playing at a higher level' NOW. For godsake he's a fixture in the England team, a star of Euro 2004. How about a few decent performances for Everton? How about first repaying the club that got him where he is today, how about repaying Moyes (the only person with any dignity in this whole sorry affair) and the fans by at least staying for a couple of seasons to let them build a decent team for the future around him? Don't tell me that $25M is 'repayment', don't tell me that football is a business....ask the fans. I absolutely salute the Everton fans who sang 'one greedy bastard' and 'stand up if you hate Rooney' at the weekend. I hope Moyes can survive the boardroom manoevres, I hope they spend the money wisely and I hope they stay up.

The agents and advisors around him are obv.filth - out for a quick buck and with no genuine concern for his career. You can't blame Rooney - he's too young to to know his own mind. You can imagine how his head will have been turned by rubbing shoulders with the likes of Owen, Beckham etcA bit too thick too. A shame he doesn't have (as far as we can tell) a parent with any sense to advise him.

Football is fucked.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 31 August 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

PinXor, old people need sex too!

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Robson thing is saddening too. Shepherd is surely one of the vilest chairmen around at the moment. As for Dyer - what a fucking tool. Hey mate, how about justifying some of the hype, knucking down and performing for the club that pays you far, far too much. You overated, complaining, self-important twat. What about trying to learn something about the game from the likes of Robson?

Of course he should spend the season in the reserves or be drummed out of the club for what he did. Who does he think he is? Would he try that on at Man Utd? Would Clough have stood for it? But no, in our new rebranded national game, the manager (one of the best and most experienced managers in the WORLD) is forced to kow-tow to some two-bit prima donna and find a way to get him back in the team. Again, the fans were absolutely right. I would have booed the tosser too.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

According to Trevor Brooking, Sven likes his players to be in Europe. I doubt that has anything to do with it, really. Rooney, I mean.

I think Everton is a very high level.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Again, the fans were absolutely right. I would have booed the tosser too."

At this I must object, booing your own players *during* a game has never sat well with me. simultaneously expecting/demanding victory from yr team and trying to upset/distract one of yr players is silly. agreed dyer was a twat, but differences to be put aside for 90 minutes.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The transfer policy at Newcastle for the last three seasons has been absolutely nuts; if this is Robson's fault then I think it's fair game for him to leave after the poor start they've had (given the state of football at the moment - I don't think ANYONE should be sacked or otherwise after only 10% of a new financial/sporting/academic year, which is essentially what's happened). But if it's Shepherd's transfer policy (buying arrogant thug after thug after thug), then this whole mess stinks. I tend to think it's the latter.

Rooney + Smith = Cantona + Hughes, anyone?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Shepherd sold Woodgate innit.

Robson bought some crap I admit : Bramble, Cort.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

**i think taking the team off would only have worsened things**

On the night maybe, but it might have helped to stamp this out more quickly. It would have forced the Spanish FA to actually address the issue, rather than hide from it. FIFA won't do anything - I'd kick Spain out of the next World Cup - draconian maybe, unfair to genuine non-racist fans, yes. But it's that important.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ireland might also have to be disqualified, as we still boo players that play for protestant clubs (i don't include myself in that 'we')

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

dr. c is otm, but spain might have valid cause for complaint re: them not being the sole guilty party.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd kick Spain out of the next World Cup

that would be ridiculous and rather unfair given how it's a minority acting in suspicious circumstances (racist abuse no more common in Spain generally than several other European countries with populations relatively bereft of a major black immigrant contingent i.e. Italy, Turkey, Serbia, Slovakia)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

aye, someone on football 365 reminds us of england fans chants of "I'd rather be a paki than a turk"? at the stadium of light last qualifying campaign. spain would have to be one of many disqualified teams, if we are going to be consistent about this.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright disqualify them all. Football's crap now anyway.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Hiveminder that it is unfair to punish a majority for a minority's bad acts.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

What SHOULD happen is that the police should round up all the racist chanters and escort them after the match to a FIFA truck outside the ground where they have to perform sex acts with the largest Yardies imaginable, which are then broadcast after the highlights package with commentary from John Motson and Ray Wilkins.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

and big ron?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

** agree with Hiveminder that it is unfair to punish a majority for a minority's bad acts**

Bad acts by : the crowd last night, the U-21 crowd, the manager..

The crowd : there is no rapid way to transform these morons into acceptable members of society. It would take years. So maybe denying them a platform to spew this racist filth is the best course of action - and it might make racists from other countries think twice too. Including English racists. Spain might need to be made an example of - and what better example than a country with a manager like theirs. And an FA that is prepared to do nothing about it.

Proper Spanish fans and players would suffer from the ban. Tough - stamping out racism is more important.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There's currently nothing in place with any teeth as far as punishing players go - and it' not likely that there will ever be anything, there's too much money involved to throw major nations out of competitions.

Ah, the beautiful cash-cow.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Not players, nations dammit

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest i can't help but toss around the nonsensical conspiracy theory in my head that British tabloids paid young Spanish people to make the reported ugly noises...predicting correctly that the game itself would be a dire exercise in tedium for England and they'd need something else to talk about

but hey, like i say, nonsensical conpiracy theory...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's ok, I've been reading a David Icke book for the last few nights. maybe the lizards possessed people in the crowd from the inside our hollow earth in order to gather baby terror blood or something.

Or they could just be a small minority of cunts.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Proper Spanish fans and players would suffer from the ban. Tough - stamping out racism is more important.

I entertained the idea of wanting Turkey banned from Euro 2000 when Turkish 'supporters' attacked Irish players on the pitch after their play-off qualifier - that's actual physical violence too, not mere verbal abuse. A less emotionally biased me quickly decided that would be too harsh however.

Don't recall hearing of any past incidents in which racial abuse was a problem with Spanish supporters e.g. when they played South Africa at the last World Cup. But I've not researched this at all.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect the social makeup of a Spanish crowd willing to travel all the way to Japan and South Korea for the World Cup was pretty different to that at the Bernabeu last night though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

fair dos. there was no real trouble with any England fans in Japan either (unlike reported incidents in France and Belgium). i'm interested in whether there was any similar incident when Spain played Holland or France in friendlies this decade tho.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No, there wasn't. I was going to say 'see upthread' but it's a different thread. To reiterate, only Ajax have been 'oooh-oooh-oooh'ed before last night, to the best of my knowledge. Of course, many of those 'oooh-oooh-oooh'ees went on to play in Spain with no further 'oooh-oooh-oooh'ing.
