Why do they look so somber all the time? I see them on the train and they look unhappy.

Pulled from a life of fun and frivolity and pressed into the service of man: C/D?

Pulled from a life of fun and frivolity and pressed into the service of man

You've got to be kidding. To be both loved and relied upon is all any dog wants!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This is why there are no guide cats, because cats are assholes who couldn't care less.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why I lurve them.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And does your cat show you any gratitude for this lurve?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd imagine blind cats would be happy with a guide human...

"haha, now you do all my bidding puny earthling!"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They don't even have to be blind to get people to do their bidding!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

my cat lurvs anybody who feeds him.

for 10 minutes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, but if they were blind they'd get more sympathy and *everything* on a plate...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ive seen guide dogs and they look hapy enough 2 me and if they wasnt they would destruct house play up they will only do what they want u can persuade them and i seen puppy on guide dog trainning in pet store and he was loveing it

Emma williams (Emma williams), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

NB we have just had an offer accepted on a flat (we are first time buyers) and meg said "ooh look a catflap!" when we were looking at it the other day. after 7 years of reasonable excuses, ie landlord's being dead against it, i now realise i have only a few cat-free weeks left...

...it's not that i don't like them or anything, i just don't see the point in pets, and especially ones that are so alien...

(emma dear, there's this thing called punctuation, it makes it a lot easier for people to read what you're saying.)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

y'all just don't know how to pet cats right. each one has a favorite spot, usually right behind their ear.

oops (Oops), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she must be made up, steve.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

really? doesn't mean she shouldn't use decent puncuation...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

that's true, though.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

also, "she" is the cat's mother!

[nurse fetches screens]
[sews sides back together]

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Having a cat is like having a grumpy bitter old man in your place that most people are allergic to.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well i dont care if ppl dont understand what i say i dont make them read it .
why dont u like pets?

Emma williams (Emma williams), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

r u made up

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat is really more like a dog, I wish he was a bit more grumpier and bitter.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

and that role is already taken in my house Spencer...

emma, if you're not bothered about people reading what you are writing, off to livejournal with you.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

u r pathetic ahh why am i writing this shit 2 u yr nobody

Emma williams (Emma williams), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

rjg, it's you isn't it?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, "u"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I were that clever!!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Serious (possible) answer: guide dogs (or seeing-eye dogs as they're known in these parts) need to be trained not to be distracted. Otherwise, they'd just drag their human around every time someone said "oh look at the cute doggie", etc. And since most of these dogs are the very gregarious breed of retriever/labrador, this enforced antisocial training goes so much against their nature that they are permanently unfulfilled and therefore depressed.

Okay, that's mostly a guess based on the one time I tried to pet such a dog and almost had my hand snapped off... by the owner. When she explained it, though, it made some kind of sense, and imagine going through this scenario every fucking day of your life.

David A. (Davant), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Justice is...blind?"

Cat-like agility!

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The guidehorses site never gets old.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I drew a comic about guide cats once. A blind man with a cat on a guide dog style leash, the cat's asleep and the guy's saying "come on, whats the hold up???"

It seemed funny when I drew it...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, Spencer. Just the gif at the top of the front page cracked me up.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer, you are a wonderful man - every single word on the Common Misconceptions about Guide Horses page is solid gold.

I wish the front cover for "Helping Hooves: the Guidehorse Story" would hurry up and load.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, what's up with braille banner? Is that a joke for sighted people? Cause the blind can't see it!

andy, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Most working breed dogs are much happier with a "job" to do than being left alone at home anyway. My sheltie's appointed himself "hall monitor" at work, watching everyone who walks around our corner & greeting the ones he knows. I've heard most herding dogs are happier with some little thing they believe is their job- they might look serious doing it, but they are secretly enjoying having a purpose.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

lyra OTM. that's probably why there are no seeing-eye whippets.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

Since the deployment in Afghanistan is winding down, over 100 IED/bomb-sniffing dogs are coming back and need homes.
