What should I paint on my guitar?

I've been after a guitar to replace my sold one for ages, and I recently picked up a battered Epiphone for £80. It needs some work (the nice man at the guitar shop has put on a new jack plug for me) but I want to repaint it, since the cherry work has rather fallen into disrepair.

So, (1) What should I aint it to make it look funky and cool, and (2) Are there any tips anyone can give me, or any useful web sites I can look at, for stripping and repainting my guitar?

paint a banana on it

The slogan "This fascist kills guitars" with arrows 'switching' the two scrubbed out words...

(the words "Fascist" and "Guitars" are the scrubbed words. )(Strikethrough not work anymore???)

I'm torn at the moment between Art Deco decoration or a Turner-esque landscape.

bachman-turner-esque?

How bout some of those curly cloud-like things in the top lefthand corner?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You're missing the big picture if you do that...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, not them cloud things. It'd make me feel ill.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to be practical as I'm not sure of the question poser's artistic skill level :)

paint a vagina on your fretboard so you can make cuntless jokes about fingering.

the goatse guy

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

might be more effective on an acoustic, though

You've got some talent if you can paint a Turner landscape on a guitar. Have you thought of this as a business opportunity?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My artistic skills are limited, so I would be relying on my talented artistic friends to do it for me, unless it was something REALLY basic.

One artistic friend (Laura) is enormously talanted at mimicking famous painters' styles - she did a guitar once in a Escher stylee (you know the one with the waterfall?) and can do pretty much any style she likes. I'm sure I could bribe her with alcohol and/or sexual favours to decorate my axe.

(ken c and surface noise have MADE MY DAY!!)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeh, but "Scream" on a guitar is so . . . . I dunno, obvious. That image is no longer a depiction of despair - it's turned into a teenage "Look how misunderstood I am, don't we all feel like that sometimes?" pic. It does my head in.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnney, isn't the teenage take on that "look how misunderstood I am, I'm the ONLY person who's EVER felt like this EVER!!!"?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, well, do "the scream", but make the guy's face, like, ozzy's or something.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

or marilyn manson (yes, I can see the flaw in my logic here)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

or possibly kevin shields. (you could have him holding a piece of paper in his hand, which reads "album deadline - next week")

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

otherwise paint a picture of an "It's a Scream" pub - it's truly a picture of despair

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

bristol pear is a rhyming slang of sorrow despair

Is 'decorate my axe' a euphemism?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What I actually painted on my bass guitar was/is a muted posthorn, from "the crying of lot 49":

I got some real fukcing weird comments from some odd people as a result of this.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

duh.

Know what's weird? That show was on twenty years ago, and each one of those "golden" girls is still alive today.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I say you paint a Roland 808. Or Jean Michel Jarre's portrait. Or a piece of bluecheese. Or a purple dragon sitting on a bar stool. Or that Virgin urinal. Now, that would be cool.

hahahahhaha omg thats horrible

John Justen, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

The tone and volume controls are his testicles, and the pickup selector switch is his penis? WTF?

snoball, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

There should be a picture of SRV painted on SRV's guitar that is painted on that guitar.

nickalicious, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Also couldn't they have drawn him with one of his other less mid-painful-shit-taking guitar faces?

nickalicious, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Is it supposed to be SRV? I didn't know that he played bass...

snoball, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Plus, that draylon/velour sofa looks like it would be very difficult to keep clean

snoball, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Actually it looks more like Bob Geldof dressed as Zorro at a velvet loon pants convention.
