How do I convert an AVI movie into a series of images / jpegs?

At the moment I'm literally moving it forward frame by frame and taking a screenshot - rough.

Surely there's an easier way - surely?

While we're on the subject, is there a decent Avi2mpeg converter or Avi player for OSX?

Mplayer will play avi (Codec permitting but it will play most codecs). AVI files are generally encoded in MPEG.
