I've never been to Glastonbury, but I've just applied to be an Oxfam steward there. Any memories/ advice?

I need to give my money first, but I get it back after I've done my shifts. Do I get to see Glastombury for free and have a good laugh, or will it be nasty?

A mate of mine did this last year, if you get in early you can schedule your shifts to suit you, and you might only have one in the middle of the festival proper. But you will get showers, and your own camping enclosure.

Do not, however, expect to get any sleep whatsoever. It won't happen.

That last point is very true. Practice at home, leave the radio on loudly overnight...

first time i went to Glasto we somehow managed to blag camping in one of the staff zones. the toilets were slightly better as less people were using them, we had a lot more space to play with as most others camping there had vans. no showers tho (actually there probably were but i was just lazy, stinkin' Glasto spirit etc.)

The only festival I've ever been to (Phoenix 93) was as a prize-winner, so we had our tent pitched next to the Manics' tour bus, if I remember rightly. It was a lot quieter, the facilities were poor but just about bearable, but overall it sucked and made the thought of being one of the great unwashed just too horrific to contemplate. I'm astonished that anyone over the age of 20 would even consider going to a festival. Astonished.

somehow that comes as no surprise, barry.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

did the Manics let you use their toilet?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

or cooking utensils/hairspray?

I'm kinda scared of doing shifts throughout the festival and missing all the early evening stuff, which looks the best bit. Will this happen whether I want it to or not?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You won't know until you get there. On the other hand, you will pay them the cost of the ticket anyway, you get that back at the end. If your shifts end up really shitty just jump ship, disappear into the festival and forfeit the money. And run like hell if you see an Oxfam steward.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What do Oxfam stewards do at Glastonbury? Do you sell second hand Stephen King paperbacks? And musty floral clothes?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They clear up litter and stuff. I imagine it's horrible. I used to work for Oxfam campaigns when I was a student and managed to always find an excuse not to have to do the Glastonbury thing.

I've never been to Glastonbury,
