It's suggested that this is part of the 'corporatization' of NPR. I think that he (and NPR in general) is not quite as sharp as once upon a time (though perhaps the audience has become sharper in the internet era). But nevertheless, the dude is an institution by now. His voice is a brand.

NPR executive vice president Ken Stern called the change part of a "natural evolution" that "had to do with the changing needs of our listeners." It was "a programming decision about the right sound," said Stern, who expressed confidence that Edwards would remain with the network.

in a supposedly in depth examination of sotomayor's "wise latina" comments, utterly misrepresents the context of comment, shortly thereafter big ups his background in documenting the civil rights struggle back in 20th century

In 1991, Williams was disciplined by the Washington Post after several female employees at the paper claimed he directed "sexually explicit and hostile comments" towards them.[6] Williams' letter of apology read, in part: "Some of my verbal conduct was wrong. I now know that, and I extend my sincerest apology to those whom I offended."[6]
Williams, a staunch defender of then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas against allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by Anita Hill, wrote in an Op-Ed column for the Post that Hill had no "credible evidence" to support her allegations against Thomas, while Williams was still under investigation by the Post for his own behavior towards female colleagues at the paper.[6]

It's pledge week, and for morning edition, that means a weeklong series about the outsourcing of airline repair jobs to places like China and El Salvador, which they're contending will have a deleterious effect on safety, due to lack of FAA oversight. Two things are bothering me:1. They've interviewed a few mechanics from the Saladoran shop, who have stated that management puts them under extreme pressure to repair planes quickly, even if that means cutting corners/not doing some repairs/using the wrong part. This is a serious concern ,of course, but it sounds like management everywhere. I guess NPR's reasoning is that FAA oversight would protect us from this, but there haven't been any interviews with American mechanics, asking them about safety.problems in their work environment.2. On both days so far, the background streetscape audio track has featured a car alarm - this morning during a prominent break in the commentary. I mean yeah, it could be coincidence.Anybody else hear these?

hmmm. he says he was fired for "yelling", but omits to say what he yelled. he promises the full story will emerge and hints he was badly provoked and largely justified, but he may not be quite as pleased at the details of that 'full story' coming out when he is not in control of them.
