Wearing headphones without any sound: C/D?

Occasionally, I'll be listening to a CD at work on headphones, the CD will come to an end without me really realizing it, and I'll keep on the headphones for several minutes with nothing playing. It's accidental, but sometimes I like the idea of listening to nothing. Or, I mean, the headphones make me conscious that what I'm listening to is nothing.

Also good as a way to ignore co-workers.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

my stupid fucking broken expensive headphones = dud

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the stupid thing is they still work but they have completely fallen apart! someone reccomend me a pair of good dj headphones that are somewhat sturdy sound good and aren't too expensive please!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got new headphones, and they're huge and loud and block out all kindsa noises. I love 'em. I'm wearing them next time I go over to my parents' house for dinner.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

this is good to do on airplanes.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

what kind & how much and do they have one wire or two and is the wire coiled like a telephone cord? (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Gamma LH 036, about $50 (cdn), one straight wire--real long, too, so I can dance. I got 'em for my radio gig, but have just moved them into discman usage too. I block out the whole fucking world with the volume on 3.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i like wearing my headphones at all times on planes, even if i'm not listening to any music. aside from blocking out some of the noise, it makes me feel more secure - like pulling the blanket up over my head to escape the bogeyman when i was kid.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Bose (and probably others) make noise cancellation headphones? These sound like the greatest things ever.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i always see t.v. ads for those. they look really great, especially for someone who flies a lot (i.e. me), but the bit about a "financing plan" scares me. how much can they be that one would need extended payment options?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

for headphones!? yeeee

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

A financing plan for fucking headphones! They better be made of platinum and unborn pony hide.

andy, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

google has never heard of those headphones huck!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yow! those Bose headphones are $299!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a sony 500 series that you should check out. my friend has a pair, and i really like using them. big but lightweight, swivelly/collapsible, clear sound. i think they're around $50-70.

xpost

aiieeeee!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

those may be the ones what broke on me! actually, i think they were 300s. the sound was really good but they were all plastic and shittily made and the cord was too long (which is weird for me as cords are always too short), or maybe it was a good length but it wasn't spirally so it was annoying.

signed, me

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

JUST BECAUSE YOU PUT VELVET IN THE SHITS DOESNT MAKE 'EM GOOD.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

are these ones you're talking about lauren?

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=Co2rb27_Ckerdi6e2X6hZCHw9AN0jtMCFtI=?CategoryName=acc_Headphones_CDSeries%2fStudioMonitor&ProductSKU=MDRV500DJ&Dept=acc

they look like they're about right for a guy like me.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i really really want a pair like my parents had with their old rack stereo set-up: giant squoval padded ear pieces, big metal and black plastic headband, and a huge spiral cord. they were heavy, but who cares. i wonder if they're still around...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

those rule! i think everyone's parents had a pair of those!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i actually used to wear a pair like that for djing but then someone got mad at me (they weren't mine)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost

yep, those are them.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hello audio store! goodbye bank account!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I got mine at a+b sound, I've never heard of em either, never even heard of the brand, but I'm not much of stereophile or whatever.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

slocki, I had similar ones (sony v-250) and I broke 2 pairs (and a friend broke his) in the exact same place, where the ear pieces attach to the headband. Now I need to use a big elastic band to use em. Sucks cause they were decently priced and sounded ok, if a bit punchy. I now use cheapo 80s foamy ones cause Im sick of going through pairs.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

they broke in several places!

1) the top part of the band cracked so that the size-controlling plastic thing always fell out
2) then the part where the earpieces attach to the headband, as above

i'd buy cheapos but i kinda need decent ones for djing & shooting.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/sc/1589445-2-300-overview-1.gif

The Koss Pro4AA are still available.. super classic, and only about $80.00.

andy, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

my dad had a pair of those from the 60s, but the gel had leaked out of the padding. So he sent them back and they replaced them free of charge, 30+ years later!

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I call bullshit on Sony DJ headphones. The really fancy ones, that are silver or black, are TOTAL crap, the plastic always breaks in the same damn place for everyone. The ones Lauren recommend are actually better then the more expensive ones.

When I broke the sony's I bought these Sennheisers on a whim and they kick ass. They feel great, they sound great, they isolate great. They look big and bulky, but they actually fold up relatively small:

http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=26&productID=0020080280

and they last. I've had them for about a year now, and I've DJ'd thousands of times, spinning with random drunk maniacs etc.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, they don't seem like DJ headphones and the first time you use them, because they're more oval then circular, it seems weird, but you get used to it quick.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, yeah. those sennheisers are nice, and i can back up dan's claim of sturdiness as he often djs with people who think that doing headstands and tackling the decks are essential components of record playing.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, thanks dan! stupid fucking sony headphones! i'll still probly end up with those sony 500s tho.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it was a combination of Freddie Mas and Luke Jenner who broke my sonys to begin with...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a combination of the cold weather and me dropping them approx 1000 times that broke mine.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

classic as a way to avoid having to pretend you are listening to people/care about what they are saying

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend just got Sony noise-cancelling headphones (MDR-NC20) that run about $100 US and that make him very happy.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Are DJ headphones mono?

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

no

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have wanted to get those Bose headphones for a while now, actually. And if I have enough spare cash lying around...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I second KOSS phones. Heavy DUTY. Makes you feel like VIETNAM.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought a $25 pair of koss dj-style headphones at best buy and like 'em lots. nice long cord (which can be a nuisance but its 500 times better than the cord being too short) good enough sound quality, and good price if youre cheap like me or if you discover theyre somewhat flimsy and need to replace them down the line.

however, i rue the day its like 90 and those big padded headphones get filled with perspiration. eww.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Kosses are classic and durable as fuck--I know radio DJs who have used the same pair for TWENTY YEARS. However I think they have too much high end and they're too big for my little pin head. I also think that Sonys have too much high end but maybe you need that when you have noise going on outside your head. I swear by Sennheisers--they have a beautiful, comfortable presence. Unfortunately I have NOT found them to be durable and I've gone through maybe $500-600 dollars replacing various models over the last 8 years. The plastic breaks--different places on different models, but it always seems to break. After my $200 Sennheiser 500 pros broke, I got a pair of $60 212 pros, and they're nearly as good.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

as mentioned upthread, I've had good luck with the Senn HD 280 pros so far being durable, and I've put them through a lot of work. btw

http://www.headphone.com is a really great site.

I got an iPod recently, no, not this one:

http://www.mijnkopthee.nl/images/cheap_ipod.jpg

and HATE HATE HATE the little earbud things that come with it, I hate all earphones that go in the ear. So now I'm using the crappy headphones that came with my cheap pioneer CD player. I want something MUCH nicer, but I don't want something bulky, I want something I can stick in my pocket during the commute. headphone.com swears by the Grado SR-60, but even those seem a bit bulky for what I want. Anyone have any suggestions for good portable headphones?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you people should tape up your headphones when they are new and they will not crack/break as often

kephm, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that works with a lot of headphones but I haven't had good luck with it--the vulnerable parts are the moving parts, and I want them to stay moveable. I try to be careful with mine but I'm putting them on and taking them off every five minutes for three hours straight, five days a week.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Portablewise, the Koss Sportapros are a little ugly but they sound fantastic and last forever.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a somewhat mentally-troubled dude who walks around downtown Lexington at a breakneck pace wearing his walkman all the while and yet apparently never ever listening to anything. People call him Walking Michael.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

what, not Otto?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How do they know he's not listening to anything? Did someone like, rip them off him? I'm confused.

Dan, I hate earbud headphones too, I have a pathalogical dislike of anything in my ears (s'true) so I go for the lower end padded Sony digitals - like Slocki and co tho my last pair of Sony MDR somethingsomethings broke in that spot where the headband attaches to the earpiece. I didnt know this was common, so I bought another pair of Sonys innit :/ Theyre nice and light though, and yes, I put them on at work even without music, it's weirdly comforting and people dont hassle me (as much).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

were they the silver all-plastic ones? this is really bugging me cuz, as i said above, they still work fine! maybe i'll build a new headpiece for them or something (as i seem to have lost that one crucial part).

or maybe i'll just spring for new ones that suit my needs better, like the whole one-wire spirally cord business.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've tried regluing them to the headband, but it never holds. That part is under a lot of stress. The only way that consistently works (but is a pain in the ass and looks crazy) is to use a tie or headband and keep the earpieces pressed against your ears. This also tends to hurt after a while though.

Dont break down and get another pair (like I did twice!). go for the sprially cord business and save yourself more heartache.

Elliot (Elliot), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

They were all plastic, and the new pair I have (MDR-P180) are silver ears with black strap, but the old pair (older version of same model I think) were all black, but yep all plastic. And yeah, mine still work fine too! Darn waste.

I tried gluing mine too and I tried stickytape with a paperclip splint (! I was bored at work ok) and got the same probs as Elliot.

I think I'll get sennheisers if these ones bust too.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried to glue 'em too but I couldn't get the damn glue out of the little bottle! stupid superglue, glueing itself to itself and making me nervous that i'm going to glue my hands together! but that's another story.

i guess i'll go sony spirally, or maybe those sennheisers mentioned above if they're around the same price.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and in response to the thread question (finally) i'd say dud, it makes me feel weird.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Hee. I have a vision of you walking round Montreal with yr headphones glued to yr hand :D

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Everywhere I used to go in Toronto people used to come up to me and ask me weird shit, usually culminating in a request for money. Perhaps it's just the giving look in my eye. Whatever. Now I just plug headphones into my ears even if I don't have anything playing at the moment; one look at the cords and people just leave me alone, usually.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've actually put my headphones on with the jack dangling into my pocket, unconnected to anything, when I've forgotten my mp3 player at home or at the office, but somehow remembered the headphones.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

thing about wearing the headphones sans musique is that i get super-conscious of them, of these big foamy things sitting on my ears and heating them up and possibly inducing earsweats and then i have to sit down.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.shure.com/psm/earphones/default.asp#e3

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

those seem dangerous. i don't like those things you have to actually put in your ears! inside them and stuff!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd better not tell you where the subwoofer goes then.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to ask the question "People who gesture wildly at you to get you to remove your headphones, then asking you some dumb-ass question C/D?" yesterday, but I've got even more reason today. On the way to the subway this morning while walking down the sidewalk, an old white car pulled up alongside me as I entered the intersection, and the old white guy inside waved towards me as if he was lost and looking for directions. I pulled out one of my earpieces (no, not the subwoofer) and when I said "yes?" he tried to bum a smoke off me. DUD. (Or utterly classic?)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 25 March 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i recall a chris v thread about co-workers who insist on talking to him when he has headphones on and then graham yelled at him

kephm, Thursday, 25 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

People seem to approach me more in the street when I'm wearing headphones?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i did it! i bought the sony 500s! they sound really good and they're nice and heavy, though i think they're quieter than the 300s. they are also better with all that other stuff i was talking about. i really shouldn't have considering my finances and all but I NEED HEADPHONES!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

now i'm worried that they're too quiet.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i should take them back. i don't know what to do.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate that.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I ALWAYS ALWAYS have buyer's remorse

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like the unspoken misery of modern life.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This is why I never buy anything :( I get the remorse and guilt while I'm still standing in the store thinking about buying the thing! I mean I went halvies in SimCity4 Deluxe last week with my b/f and I still feel bad about paying for software... wtf.

More on topic tho, it has ocurred to me recently that having headphones on seems to make no difference at my work - people just talk at me anyway. C**ts.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

coats?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Goddamn coats.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)
