it's e-mail robots harvesting usernames from ILX to try and trick you into thinking you've received mail from a 'friend' - pay no mind

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

tho I reckon Sterling Clover really did send me a virus last week

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I wonder. But the content of the message (please remove / ungoogle me), I'm sure its a genuine one.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 March 2004 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I got it too. I am a mod and will look into it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 March 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This is something I've suspected going on for a while. My old talk21 address seems to be harvesting mails from ILXers - Mark's sent me one apparantly, as has Geir, and others. I hope none of these people are really trying to talk to me because I just delete them.

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

stevie nixed got a message from "me" that said "you are a bad writer" !!!

whatever this email harvester is, it appears to pack advanced neural programming that reveals our most niggling insecurities

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a few Netsky ones where the email has obviously come from ILX - pitchforkmedia, jerrythenipper and and few others. They've stopped coming in the last few days though.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I deleted my entire killfile list, b/c demon uses brightmail spam filtering, but I forgot that there were a few email people in there, not just dodgy terms, and whatd'y'know, I got one as well. I checked the link he provided, but I couldn't see wtf he (scroll to the bottom) was on about.

WTF anyway. He said he wasn't coming here again, and it has been a little while now, hasn't it?

The dodgy mails referred to above sound very exciting. All I get is virii. Someone on a yahoo group I'm in copped thee netsky worm, and it sent a mail to the group. USING MY EMAIL AS THE SPOOFED "FROM" ADDRESS!! fux0rz.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

++w/r/t tracer's comment about our "insecurities", yes, the first netsky-infected message that landed in my inbox a coupla weeks ago had the subject header "your music", so of course I was very excited & stuff, and when I found there was just some stupid & obvoiusly very dodgy .pif attachment it was a crushing blow.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 25 March 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had one about 'your music' from Jess.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 25 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to field (in my role as temp receptionist) an enraged call from a writer repped by a rival agency who received an email purporting to be from our IT manager saying "you are a bad writer". She was very upset, and regardless of my explanations (and the logic of the situation - agencies don't use easily-traceable guerilla tactics to destabilise rival agency talent, ffs), she insisted on speaking to the IT guy, who was immediately gentle and sympathetic with her while I'd been blunt, brusque and condescending.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 25 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to be getting a lot of this of late as well:

********************************************************************
Dear user of "CO.UK" mailing system,

unauthorized access.

I get something like 4 or 5 variations on this ("complaints from our users about a large volume of spam/viruses originatin from you domain" is one other), each w/an attachment,
usually with a .pif extension. In the real, non idiot virus writer
world, ".co.uk" is woolworths' website. I kind of get the feeling that
complaining to woolworths would be a waste of their and my time though,
plus, I can hardly filter ".co.uk", can I? Someone on a mail list I'm on got a load of them claiming to be from v3riz0n.net.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount got one from me. If anyone gets an e-mail from me with the address I use on this board, it's probably not from me, as I don't really use this address anymore.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Thea got one from me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett is always trying to sell me Viagra

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, wrong thread

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And do you give me money? NO.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got them from Ned and Jess... two of the more unlikely contributors to my emailbox.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The other day I thought that Chris cabbage had v. kindly sent me an MP3 to listen to:-(

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Di said she got one from me too, which *has* to be someone else with a virus, as my somethingorother adress is a webmail address, and I dont even check or send from it (tis merely a spamcatcher).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)
