Well Celtic are playing Barcelona again this evening at the Nucamp - your views/hopes please.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they have a real chance. They'll be competitive and not easy to beat, and Larsen always poses some goal threat. I won't be at all shocked if they do it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

One goal you hope would be enough, but it might not be, and you have to do some hoping that there's one goal in the first place. As a Celtic supporter I say: Celtic 40%; Barcelona 60%.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 25 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I misread the title of this thread as "Celtic chants this evening" and imagined something ritualistic.

Maria D., Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ainge has run them into the ground.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Barca to win 3-1 (sorry Celts)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems made the joke I stopped myself twice from making.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray for celtic!
i watched the liverpool game and
1) that ball was the ugliest i've ever seen
2) it was nice to see a team play in a strip with no advertising
3) martin o'neill to be liverpool manager by the start of next season

zappi (joni), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the stevem jinx pays off again! congrats to the Buoys, Reds hang your 'eads (again)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

David Marshall: good kid.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that finishes Houllier. Well done, Celtic!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Houllier blames ref for Euro exit

Gerard Houllier bemoaned the performance of referee Dauden Ibanez after watching Liverpool crash out of the Uefa Cup in Marseille.

Houllier insisted the Spanish official was "wrong" to award a crucial penalty against his side.

Emile Heskey had given Liverpool the lead before Igor Biscan was sent off for tugging Steve Marlet's shorts and Didier Drogba equalised from the penalty spot.

In the second half, Abdoulaye Meite's header gave Marseille victory, 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

"I thought it was a very harsh decision and the wrong decision because it was way outside the box," said Houllier on five.

"If he [Biscan] did something wrong, it was outside. I don't think it would have been a penalty if it had happened the other way.

"The referee gave them a bit of help today."

As the game wore on, Michael Owen was taken off, apparently after feeling his hamstring tighten, as Liverpool continued to chase the game.

Houllier added: "We had a plan to cause them problems, scored a goal and had a couple of chances.

"I was just waiting for half-time to make substitutions and bring in some fresh legs, but I could not do that. It [the penalty] changed the whole game.

"The effort was magnificent and I feel sorry for the lads and the fans that travelled because we did not deserve to lose."

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

THIS THREAD IS ABOUT CELTIC

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

So can't I declare my manlove for Obafemi Martins here then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Celtic didn't do much this evening. They clung on for 90 minutes and Marshall was extremely stubborn. That's it, and it was spectacular.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Cracking save from the lad Marshall in the 2nd half. I'm quite happy for Celtic to win here, but a large loss on Sunday would also be pleasant.

I'm glad Nick is finally ashamed.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I think 0-0 games are the most thrilling games you can experience. As with Prospero, the drama all takes place inside oneself.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

help! i live around the corner from the irish pub where, like 400 celtic fanms have ben congregating since yesterday and drinking all thru the night. will i never get any sleep?!?!
barcelona is fucking mental at the moment...

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

HONOUR THE CRAIC

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cherish it ambrose!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bye bye Magnus hate to see you go.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello, is this my thread?

Celtic were determined not to lose, and it paid off. David Marshall and John Kennedy were unexpected heroes. My heartbeat was approx. 200 bpm all match, I was rapidly approaching hitherto unseen levels of hysteria all game, and...er...we won. Jesus.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yay!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it's Villareal in the next round isn't it?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

this has somewhat fuxored my holiday plans. I had intended to go away early April but apparently we have to play Villareal home first on the 8th April. Where the hell do they play anyway?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

best 0-0 draw since germany-italy in euro 96! ronaldinho was becoming very agitated indeed as it gradually dawned on him that these stubborn bastards weren't going to conceed: his frustration made for compelling viewing. best thing about celtic matches is their thrillingly inconsistent right winger didier agathe. today, he turned in a v.solid defensive display on the right. reminded me of the job kilbane does for ireland. great game hurrah! lots of scots over for the rugby match so the atmos was even better!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

my prediction was the same as stevem's actually, i was pleasantly surprised to see them go through.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Villareal is surely a made up name?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronaldinho's stamping on Thompson looked very sore indeed, I can't believe it took him until right at the end of the match to get booked. I wouldn't even get me started on Agathe - he's the most inconsistent player I have seen in years. When he tries (which is rarely, but in the SPL he generally doesn't have to), he has the pace, stamina and determination to beat anyone he wants, but his crossing leaves so much to be desired too much of the time.

The worst thing over the two legs for me was the performance of Alan Thomson. For someone knocking on the door of the England squad, that was two of the poorest performances I have seen from him. He was immense during the UEFA campaign last year, but his form has deserted him and then some this time around.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post that I have just noticed - Villareal seems like a bit of a made-up name, but I wager that N. will spend much of his time at work the next few days finding out more about them than he would ever really need to know)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

-ailsa

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been quivering with happiness all night.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought of you a-quiver.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you cozen for reminding me of that. I think i love david marshall now, and i am glad, for once, that i have been proved wrong

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I've basically just been walking around going 'omg' and swearing lots for the past couple of hours.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

and doing that juvenile thing of recreating the game on the computer using ISS.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 26 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I heards sirens, earlier.

using the postcode of the Villareals footbal ground on their website

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any Rangers fans on ILE at all? It seems to be all Celtic as far as the eye can see...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally c is a dirty Hun, yes

(but I wuv him still)

chris (chris), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Villareal aren't a bad side, some good journeymen in there, like Sonny Anderson and Riquelme is good too (on loan from Barca)

But if Celtic can do Barca over in the form they've been in lately (although they looked a little jaded last night, probably due to Celtic's harrasment of them) they should win this.

Pearsons little jink on the edge of the box last night was lovely.

chris (chris), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Celtic - Newcastle semi-final please please please (altho i would be torn as to who i'd prefer to win)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

make that FINAL

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just talking about the perfection that would be a Celtic v Newcastle final this evening.

Picture the scene. It's Gothenburg, it's Henrik Larsson's Celtic swansong in his homeland. Cue several thousand voices "we don't need Shearer, cos he's a wanker, so please don't take my Larsson away". Perfect.

I have now located Villareal, and may well be there on the day of the game. (Possibly anyway - I will be in Malaga that week and I think a trip up north may be in order)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 March 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have discovered that it's spelled 'Villarreal'.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 27 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, that threw me at first, the only vllareal with one r is on the Portuguese border.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 27 March 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh-huh, that was what confused me. I only found the one on the Portuguese border at first, it was my mum that told me it was near Valencia.

Their "stadium" capacity is apparently only 12,000 which is 8,000 less than the number of Celtic fans in the Nou Camp on Thursday. I can't imagine I will get a ticket.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 27 March 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a grand old team to play for.

nice bit of spin-doctoring by o'neill bringing on miller. I'd boo him anywhere else on the planet but against rangers. he might just have a part to play in all this yet.

young kennedy, young marshall, young pearson. if miller was one of us (ONE OF US) it'd be like the four horsemen of the apocalypse. except w. football and w.out horses.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and now I have to travel back into old firm match glasgow. : /

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

19 points clear, 30 games unbeaten in the league, two games away from the title. Life doesn't get much better than this (however, if it hadn't been for Motherwell and Dunfermline we'd have won the league already)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 28 March 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved MON's comments yesterday, where he said that after games like Barca, it was hard sometimes to get focussed on games like the one against Rangers. Sticking the knife in and then twisting it.

See the lilos in the Celtic end? I'd like to see the trend for inflatables back on the terraces.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 28 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The match was five minutes late kicking off whilst the Ibrox groundstaff had to clear a stack of beachballs off the pitch. The lilo thing started before the UEFA Cup Final last year ("we'll be lying on our lilos while you're cashing your giros, we're going to Seville and you're no'" - disregard for the geographic location of Seville notwithstanding, it was classic).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 28 March 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree - that song has some inspired versions. Particularly liked 'they'll always remember we won the league in September' and 'tell all the huns you know that they'll never sell Ricksen or Flo.'

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 28 March 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

on thursday night I ended up wearing a celtic strip in a foam party in the french alps screaming 'martin o'neil, martin...'. It was a surprising night. On the plane home today from amsterdam there were loads of shady bastards keeping their mobile phones on getting the score on the go.

see ar (see ar), Sunday, 28 March 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree - that song has some inspired versions. Particularly liked 'they'll always remember we won the league in September' and 'tell all the huns you know that they'll never sell Ricksen or Flo.'

With the continued lyrics after the League Cup Final last year "you can cheer yourselves up with your Mickey Mouse Cup but you'll never stop two-in-a-row". Or during the nine-in-a-row disaster "you think you're so great, but you've only got eight, and you'll never get nine in a row". (the first lines at that time were "Paolo di Canio says you'll never get nine-in-a-row") OK, so neither were proved right, but it's a rich seam to be mined for lyrical possibilities.
