Tarzan: Classic Or Dud?

A twentieth century icon who is now disregarded due to anachronism and anti-imperialism, or a big bloke chummy with animals who never really got the hang of basic conversation? (Do not read any of my previous comments on bestiality into this thread by the way.)

So who was the best Tarzan, was Tarzan any good and can he continue to be good? I'm a Weissmuller man o'course - his definitive performance may well be what has made him so difficult to do since.

V. Early comics memory - reading this ace (would it be ace now? Who knows?) Tarzan story about the MURDER TREE - Tarzan (or was it Korak) did fuck all and the murder tree got vengeance with its particularly thick and tactile-drawn fronds. Last picture saw feet of murderer dangling limply from the murder tree. Has become totally conflated in my mind with that Gilbert Hernandez Palomar story about the tree underwhich the ghosts sit.

So that was classic.

A high school history teacher once said that as long as Tarzan "lives" Imperialism and Colonialism are alive, etc.. I don't know about that, but I do know that the whole Tarzan thing sucks.

Therefore as the best one, I have to give it to that terrible Richard Harris-Bo Derek flick of the early 80's. I got to thank them for introducing my 10 year old eye's to Mrs. Derek's *ahem* talents.

I think your history teacher was a fake — like those mad people who sneak into hospitals, put on white coats and prescribe random chemicals for pregnant women.

Those're called "doctors".

two years pass...
I have to agree with Pete re: Weissmuller. Didn't work with Buster Crabbe coz he'd already been typecast as a spaceman in his Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers roles. Gordon Scott was crap. Christopher Lambert was basically taking a ludicrous idea and trying to make it credible (perhaps only slightly).

I'd quite like to see the Tarzan cartoon again. I remember enjoying it as a kid even tho they'd made lots of seemingly unnecessary changes such as replacing Chita the chimp with a small monkey and generally renaming all the other animals. I seem to recall Tarzan being transported in the talons of an outsized eagle as well.

No Tarzan episode was ever complete without an underwater FITE with a crocodile.
