Georgia House Votes for Genital-Piercing Ban

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Try again. 'The ban applies only to women, not men.' Unless you're a man with a vagina, you don't have a problem.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I was including women with cocks, too. Don't want to be unPC.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

An amendment adopted without objection added "piercing" to the list of things that may not be done to female genitals.

What else, pray tell, is on this list?

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(meaning vaginal men could get vag piercings, acc. to the law)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

All genital piercing issues aside, isn't there a constitutional issue with the "ban on female" only thing in general?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

An amendment adopted without objection added "piercing" to the list of things that may not be done to female genitals. Even adult women would not be allowed to get the procedure. The bill eventually passed 160-0, with no debate.

Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

"I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing." = "I pay rent on several warehouses to contain my personal bestiality porn collection."

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

YOUR VAGINA BELONGS TO THE STATE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

All genital piercing issues aside, isn't there a constitutional issue with the "ban on female" only thing in general?

Um, ERA didn't pass, DB. (There would be a problem with it in Oregon's Constitution, though!)

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriuously find it hard to believe in this day and age that anyone in the western world would not know people willingly get piercings in pretty much every bodypart. Are there really people that ignorant/sheilded still around? Actually it probably is more like a coverup heh.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

He's trying to cover up his pierced Vengavagina?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Note that it's a crime to perform the piercing, not to have it.

This basically means that tattoo/piercing pads in South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Florida panhandle just got a boom in business.

"I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing." = "I pay rent on several warehouses to contain my personal bestiality porn collection."

I know you're just kidding, but... EH?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 26 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently the ban was slapped on as a rider to a bill banning involuntary genital mutilation. A better story is here:

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/legislature/0304/25female.html

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was making a joke about how repressed people tend to have large porn collections, which isn't always true, but can be a funny thing to say sometimes.. maybe not this time though)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Think of all the people in Kansas pissed off that they didn't think of this first.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently the ban was slapped on as a rider to a bill banning involuntary genital mutilation.

Okay, but what's wrong with the existing Federal ban? (It outlaws "medically unnecessary" surgical alteration of female genitals in females under age 18, and was specifically designed to address cultures that practice "traditional female genital surgeries.")

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

this is crazy when you consider the popularity of the medically unnecessary alteration of male genitals in males under age 18.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it's crazy in+of itself, anyway, but.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well, now trife can use all that money's he'd been saving for a price albert and buy even MORE hip-hop cds.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I may stir up a can of worms mixing this metaphor, but isn't female "circumcision" (and mutilation it is, rightly) a little harsher/crueller than the male version?

I dont agree with either, I have to point out, but when you think that some traditions go as far as SEWING WOMEN UP... *shudder*.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"but isn't female "circumcision" (and mutilation it is, rightly) a little harsher/crueller than the male version"

It's a hell of a lot crueler than the male version.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

is the male version a bit cruel, too, though?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

One mohel I've met puts the foreskin in a special jar for families to take home.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jarjaric.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

barbaric, I mean.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

barbaric jinx.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, RJG it's not particularly nice either, but it's like comparing first degree burns to third degree burns (not to mention that the main reasons for doing so are/were pretty different.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure the reason for doing either of them is to show babies just who the boss is around here.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but female circumcision isn't done to babies.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Coincidentally, the only person I know from Georgia has a genital piercing. Maybe it's a local thing.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

where, pray tell, are actual Georgia residents Blount and $$ when we need them?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

in other news, the '90s are officially over now, aren't they?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting their g-friends labia's pierced while they still can?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see all the border towns just outside Georgia with big neon signs saying "WE PIERCE LABIAS, CLITORISES, ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND DOWN THERE!"

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

no-one, I imagine, has a frickin VAGINA piercing. Getting your V words mixed up.
Also female genital mutilation on babies happens in the context of intersex...like the baby's clit is "too big" well it tends to be cut

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

in most cases "too big" = "existing"

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 26 March 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey, you guys wanna see my uterus piercing?"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is making me cross my legs and wince.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's still stinging?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, man..if only the image of the talking vagina movie were not so small

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a start.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but female circumcision isn't done to babies.

It generally happens at the begining of or during puberty. By all accounts it's pretty brutal. All external part of the genitals removed in some cases, and sewing up what renmains is also practiced in some cases. (they are just tightening up the law in the UK to outlaw going abroad to have to done, it's already illegal, but still practiced in the UK by some communities, especially Somali)

Trayce, it even makes me wince to hear about it.

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

However, the add on amendment to this law is just crazy.

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

These Americans are crazy!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

head down pussy pussy poppin

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

so yeah, there's considerable outrage that this guy slipped the amendment into this bill, that it's so blatantly unfair at that (if anything ban prince alberts cuz they're dorky and pro-monarchist), and that this is some shit they'd pull in south carolina (HI TRIFE!). can't wait for the sting ops on this one though!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Pierce that quim Miss Kelly Kelly
Pierce that quim Miss Annabella
Pierce that quim Miss Donna Donna
Pierce it, Jordan, and then pierce Rebecca!

Sean Paul (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

what's really k-fucked up is that the local michael stipe bought and paid for city government banned strip clubs and late nite disco

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

but i got my own problems

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do you have a local Michael Stipe, and why is he buying government-banned strip clubs and disco?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Female circumcision or female genital mutilation (fgm) is barbaric. It upsets me to even think about it. The clitoris is hacked off in a sort of coming-of-age ritual. I saw an episode of Oprah based all on this and it literally gave me nightmares for months. And anyone who uses the argument that fgm is a "cultural" issue misses the point -- it's a blatant violation of human rights.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"but isn't female "circumcision" (and mutilation it is, rightly) a little harsher/crueller than the male version"

Of course, because it leaves the woman with little or no sexual feeling. This is a ritual common in certain parts of Africa - the clitoris is basically removed. It's a practice based on cultural grounds, not for religious reasons, and to control the women ( as they are less likely to have extra-marital affairs).
