Home sweet home.

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Friday, 26 March 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always thought that if you're going to hell anyway, going in a handbasket would make it a little bit easier.

Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store, the clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say

I hate Winnipeg

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded rider’s restlessness enunciates
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway
The same route everyday
And in the turning lane
Someone’s stalled again
He’s talking to himself
And here’s the price of gas, repeat his phrase

I hate Winnipeg

And up above us all
Leaning into sky
Our golden business boy
Will watch the North End die
And sing, “I love this town”
Then let his arcing wrecking ball proclaim

I
Hate
Winnipeg

(That's the Weakerthans, btw, not me.)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(And it's bittersweet, not meanspirited.)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I've never been there, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Winnipeg. I was crushed when they lost the Jets.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

At least Wpg has the dignity of being carried in a handbasket. Regina's going to Hell in a brown paper bag.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Winnipeg was nice! (aside from the van getting towed)

hstencil, Friday, 26 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was still living in Brandon, I used to really dislike Winnipeg. The streets were dirty, the mood of the people was surly, the buildings were ugly and there really didn't seem to be a whole lot to do for a city of such a size. But apparently it's really turned itself around...possibly the influence of a hipper younger mayor, perhaps? But at any rate, last time I was in the city and hanging out with Bryan, it seemed a lot nicer to be in the downtown area, and I actually thought it might be nice to come back.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And let's hear it for Mondragon!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd credit bryan for the improvment.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Winnipeg seemed pretty durn nice when I was there! But maybe Bryan cleaned up the place a bit because he knew I was coming over. (You should have seen what a shambles Huck left Regina in -- he didn't even do the dishes!)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was born in Winnipeg

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 26 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and then left in a hand-basket

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 26 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Regina tends not to flush the toilet either.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 26 March 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

They're working on it!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 27 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhh Canada. Wherever you are, you're just fifty feet from a dirt road.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

he is not going to invite me over is he.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to visit the peg every summer as a kid and thought it was OK, but I had more fun in Flin Flon (where my dad is from), and Minnedosa (my grandparents lived there. the town sign proclaimed it: "The town of tomorrow... TODAY!").

Yes, I said 'fun'. Clearly I had a strange childhood...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Greg is from F.F. and so is the guy from the Summerlad (a really good Calgary band). I passed through there on a fishing trip once. It's not Prairie, so it's okay in my books.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

In Brandon we always used to see commercials for Minnedosa on our local TV station, and it used "A Place in the Sun" as its backing music. I always thought I should go there because there was a place in the sun there, but ultimately we went to fish just above the dam, even though we never caught anything but clams.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(wishing that was the Marine Girls "A Place in The Sun" as background music, but doubting it)

mike a, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it was the Stevie Wonder song, but I don't think it was actually Stevie singing it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me or does that one guy in the Summerlad look like he's standing on stilts? Too tall! Is it the main guy that's from the Peg? I haven't seen them play in about a year (which is unusual, because for the previous year it seems like I saw them once a week). Good band indeed. With a little luck I'll be in Calgary by supper time...

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm overcaffeinated.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to spend a lot of time in Minnedosa as one of my best friends had his family cabin in the little Brandosa area (the Stanger/Swanson cabin). Our favourite pastime (besides going to the Solo store and acting weird) was to go to Wasagaming for the day, find girls from our school, then get them to come up to the cabin for the night. We would interrogate them until the wee hours of the morning getting them to tell us important stuff like who looked the best naked in the change room and if the particular girl's pubes were the same colour as the rest of their hair. No wonder I didn't lose my virginity until I was 19.

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

All I can really remember about Minnedosa was the dam (thanks for the pleasant flashback Sean!), a mini-putt course I loved, the big hill where you could see for miles ('Indian Hill', maybe? I found an arrowhead up there once) and a 50s-style ice-cream place. Oh yeah, me and this local kid Colin used to trek to a field where there was this rusty old 1940s car that we would 'play' with. After all the glass and moving parts were broken we lost interest.

The interrogation is where you went wrong. You're supposed to make out with them!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 1 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess, but the girls we would bring back weren't into me. I wasn't hot in high school the way I am now. Why are you all laughing?

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Friday, 2 April 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

I'm working on the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights that'll open at the Forks. Annoying city to travel to from NYC. Any tips?
