OK, KazaA, time to DIE!!!

So, I reckon it's time for Kazaa to GET OFF MY PC!

It's been useful, I admit. Like you folks, I only used it for 'fairly obscure' stuff thesedays. In the past, I admit downloading the entire white stripes and hives backcatalogs, (Audiogalaxy was better anyway) the occasional radiohead one which I bought anyway, but once the novelty wore off, you nowadays find that the album you spent hours getting is in Fopp for a fiver anyway. And nowadays, little around due to paranoia!

So, how easy is it to get Kazaa and it's myriad spawn progs out? Tips and processes (websites if any) appreciated.

Or, fess up anon..

KaZaa? how quaint

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 March 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be an uninstall option in the Kazaa link from the program menu ...
If by "myriad spawn progs", you mean spyware, then get Lavasoft's Ad-aware to clean up your hard drive.

Kazaa more of a pain to get rid of than syphilis. It tends to leave spyware and files and random stuff all over the shop. I did my yearly reformat a few months ago, so I have no tips on removing the bastard, short of scratching it all and starting again.

I have Zonealarm / Pest control, for what it's worth...

I internally mock anyone who still reminisces about Audiogalaxy. It died like two years ago! Get over it!

You might also need this in addition to Ad-aware, if your PC is really crawling with shit: http://www.safer-networking.org/

I wouldn't necessarily give up on file sharing just cause Kazaa sucks (you didn't even use Kazaa lite wtf!). If you've spent any time around ilx at all you're no doubt aware of Soulseek, www.slsknet.org, the users of which provide a better selection (quality-wise if not quantity-wise, although maybe that too) than Kazaa ever had.

The thing that sucks about Soulseek, though, is that, unlike old-time Kazaa, it's mostly not good for anything other than music. If you want to get movies or super illegal w@r3z OMG then get a Bittorrent client (ABC is a good one: http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net) and go visit http://www.suprnova.org/ ; if you use the search page there you can find just about anything you could ever want.

But before any of that you're going to have to look deep within yourself and ask the burning question: "Am I sure I really want to get rid of Bonzi Buddy, my closest and dearest friend?"

http://www.supernova.org

suprnova.org seems to be broke; this looks more like a .torrent search page.

Looks interesting, I'm just a little wary of the 19.95 for the year charge without being able to try it out first. Anyone else using this?

that supernova.org shit looks dodgy as fuck. I would stick to suprnova.org

Shady Nook (shady nook), Friday, 26 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean really, supernova.org is annoying me just looking at it

Shady Nook (shady nook), Friday, 26 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the real shit is a suprnova.org

Ed (dali), Friday, 26 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

supernova.org is some kind scam thing, I saw this the other day when I mistyped suprnova.org. I have little doubt that supernova.org will steal your credit cards and run rampant with them.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

don't pay any money for bittorrents dude! (or any other p2p for that matter!) also BEWARE slsk.org, slsknet.org is the real deal.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, suprnova.org almost always works. But it has multiple mirrors and you're auto-directed to one or the other, so if one mirror is down hit shift-refresh and it will probably try another one. At least I think that's what goes on.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Illegal downloading feels a lot more illegal these days.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really afraid to download anything again, after the lawsuits and stuff. Am I being reasonable or a big baby?

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it would probably be more sensible to worry about getting into a car and being in an accident, relative risk-wise, but hey.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems like I can't find the songs I really want on Kazaa-lite OR Slsk. I suppose I should just set it to download before I go to work or to sleep, but it seems like those 6 hr transfers never complete anyway. This is why I spend so much money on cds, damnit!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's an outrage!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Dan I. - I must have hit one of the mirrors that were down this morning, assumed you mistyped the 'e' and went onto that supernova.org, which really does seem like a scam -- one that was hit upon by someone who may've realized that if you spread the phrase 'suprnova' by word of mouth, that's the site you're likely to hit upon.
I love ILX.

nah, Kazaa is still good for downloading movies on a shitty connection speed.
