What does the colour orange signify in a literary setting?

m. reed, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That someone is in the presence of, is eating or has eaten (cf peel) an orange.

Isn't there something a bit Blackadder about the fact that an orange is called "an orange" because it's, er, orange? (cf Lord Percy Percy: "Behold, a nugget of the purest green!")

In colour psychology it refers to social interaction. The more you use it in drawings, the more social active you are. I hated orange as a kid.

Ah but Anthony - remember Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. And sometimes oranges merely symbolise oranges.

Pete, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Orange can signify safety, as it is the colour most easily visible to the human eye.

in the 1890s orange or yellow was seen as the most decadent of colours. Aubrey Beardsley painted his room orange, possibly in imitation of Des Esseintes' room in JK huysmans' 'A Rebours'. Oscar Wilde's favourite colour was vermilion.

And they used to be NORANGES which makes them even better. I am going to resurrect the word NORANGE.

In Holland the colour Orange signifies the Dutch Royalty, the Huis van Oranje, + by way of association the Netherlands in general. National sports teams all wear Orange, whilst the fruit is given a seperate name sinaasappel.

This inadvertently lead to the colour having quite different connotations in (Northern) Ireland. The Dutch monarch William of Orange was offered the English throne during the 'Glorious Revolution' coup. Forces under him went on to defeat Catholic King James in Ireland, and the colour was adopted by Northern Irish Protestants, hence the Orangemen and their veneration of King Billy. That William fought with Catholics under his command, won with the blessing of the Pope, and was primarily interested in preserving Dutch independence, doesn't stop them from commemerating his victories through sectarian hate-fests every summer.

In one of the Irish War's more tragicomical moments a Tory NI minister Peter Brooke was forced to resign having been gently cajoled into singing 'Oh my darling Clementine' on RTE's 'The Late Late Show'. Unfortunately for the luckless Brooke, this was shortly after another murderous IRA attack and Ulster Unionists were left seething.

are you just supposed to know that certain colours signify certain things or is it that someone did psychological tests on loads of people and a lot of them reported feeling safe when the colour orange is mentioned?

robin (robin), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I read orange is the color of insanity.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

A professor of mine who was given to grand pronouncements once said orange was the color of desparation. That guy's paper has probably come and gone already, though, and it's just as well.

This is the color that my mom painted my bedroom when I was a kid, so I still associate orange with childhood. And not being able to sleep very well -- bright orange is not what I would call a relaxing color.
