Did you ever play "Mercy" at school?

A brutal game where you had to try and rip each others knuckles out there sockets. If someone gave in they had to say "Mercy".

i think there are many local variations on this, re. pain infliction.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 27 March 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was shit at it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 27 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I used to play a lot in 5th grade. I've only played a few times this school year.

I'm really good. Only problem, I can't beat the one's with the chubby hands or my old friend Andrew. Funny thing though, when I'd play a game where it seemed as if I might actually lose, the game was never finished. I'm very subborn and never say MERCY. Not once, so the game runs long and recess ends and we can't finish.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never lost a single match of knuckles in my life. No big crushing hits, just a zillion stabby lightning ones over a looooong period of time, grinding down your spirit. The best way to do this is to actually keep your fist wound slightly slack, creating an effortless whip effect with extended practice - there's almost zero detectable windup this way. I'm abnormally fast though. It's scary when I've been working on a guy for 20 mins and thinking to myself, "Wow, I am REALLY enjoying hurting this person."

LC, Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

aah, good old chubb hands.

i sucked at it. i am not a man. in my last year of high school a 5-ft chinese girl beat me arm wrestling. ok she used both hands, but still - i'm 6'2" and 180 lbs. I had to turn my testicles in at the door and be evicted from The Man Club.

Belgian Rofflez (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

being tall helps you in arm wrestling?!?!?

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

long reach!!

Belgian Rofflez (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, but I'm a girl and I've beaten plenty of boys. That's why they keep chanlenging me. They just don't know my secret of never saying "MERCY" and so, eventually I find a way to beat them. One time I played this other girl and I was shocked at how she was just about as strong as me. Only problem, she wasn't as clever. So, after about a minute of classic Mercy, I took a quick spin and twisted both our hands to their limits, and because I just wouldn't say it, she screamed "MERCY!!!!"

That was great. Another game won!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh psssh chubby hands can easily be overcome with patience and correctly-angled maximization of knuckle sharpness. Plus if your opponent is slow but a bit of a tank, just overshoot a little and go for the wristelbow. Mmmmmmm tears. xpost

LC, Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Knuckles FAP? Just an idea.

LC, Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Arm wresteling is much easier. I was beaten once. Pissed me off! I played him again and won. Only because I made him swich to left handed and I use both my right and left hands so I won. But I still lost a game. So sad.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They just don't know my secret of never saying "MERCY"

B-but that's the whole aim of the game! How stupid ARE they?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 27 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know. Stupider than me though. But, many people are that way. It's really frustrating. Commmon sense and memory people!!!!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha it's true the last time i played mercy i had to strain to remember not to say mercy by accident!! there was one time when i was playing this beautiful girl walked in, and i was like "ooohhh, mercyyyy!"

and i lost!

LC's description sounded more like fisting.

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 27 March 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

LC was talking about knuckles. I've never played that.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

We had mercy, and also a game called roasting, where victim would be standing near a wall and a football would be aimed at them. Luckily, I was just a step up from victim class at school and managed to avoid these games.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 27 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never really fisted either

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 27 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I avoid knuckles. Only problem is all the boys who play keep asking my to play and I have to keep talking my way out of it. I was actually hit once when I said no. He hit my knucles so hard. It hurt. I didn't let him know that though. I gave him a hard stare and told him I didn't want to play. He finally left me alone. I don't think I've talked to him since then.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a game back in school that involved playing the "push a 2p coin through a 'goal' of 2 2p coins until it goes into a goal, and if you score you get to push a 2p coin at high speed along the table and into your opponent's knuckles - the first one to bleed loses.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 27 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

this game was lame at the time because i was week. now i like it.

i also like playing knuckles when i'm drunk now.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 27 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you drunk NOW? I think you meant weak, not week. And what time are you talking about? Middle school?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, eat me, woman.

i am talking like 4th-6th grade.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay. Should have said so in the first place.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 27 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never ever been hurt by a chinese burn. Yet most people can't bare it - even girls with no hair on their arms, or big hard dudes with loads of hair.

Am I a freak or is this a normal affliction?

Also: they call it an indian burn in calvin and hobbes - is that an american version?

they also called "mercy" "peaknuckles" at my school but then everyone found out it was actually a popular card game and carried on calling it "mercy" till they gre out of it. at 27.

Also - Raps - a card game that involved getting 12 light raps on your hand wit the pack or 6 really really hard ones.

And - that game where you bent double, inhaled loads and loads and then people push against your chest till you pass out... That one was fucked! I remember waking up to a teacher going "Charles? Charles?! Are you okay?!" and me going "Fuckin 'ell where the fuckamamiIIiii?".

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Indian burns here. And we call the game you describe Bloody Knuckles instead (I think Aja's version of Mercy is the same as the one I grew up with).

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the one i remember was like wrestling but with the tips of your fingers dug into each others knuckles.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's the one. (I think so anyway, I probably played it exactly once.)

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Mercy was never really popular at my school but instead we had

Chicken Scratch: scratch the back of your hand for as long as you can. Often results in a weeping sore that eventually scabs over and provides picking entertainment for assembly all next week. Never thought of a good enough excuse to convince my Mum my friends and I weren't a bunch of self-mutilators.

Card Torture: turn over the top card. Look at the number. Do that many of the following to the back of your friend's hand:
- Spades - dig your nails in
- Clubs - pinch and twist
- Diamonds - scratch
- Hearts - gently stroke
Continue until the whole deck has gone, then hand them to your friend, who does same to back of your hand. Pray that King of Spades comes near the top of the pack.

I miss school so!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds similar to Bloody Mary, Madchen. Which I can't remember how to play, but I do know that if you lost you had to pick a card from the deck. Black cards were soft taps or scrapes, red cards were hard. You were specifically not allowed to draw blood UNLESS you drew the queen of hearts - in which case blood was obligatory.
