This was some kinda thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I always liked that guy who did Green Nigel on Tiswas... what was his name, David Rappaport? I think he ended up topping himself because he hated being short, which was sad. I seem to remember liking him primarily because he was funny, the whole midget thing was almost incidental.

I think he was in Time Bandits too.

I read a great interview once with this midget bloke who was in the Kray twins gang. He mentioned how people sometimes make fun of him because he is so short, but when he has broken their legs with a crowbar and given them a few "slaps" they tend to stop laughing.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 28 March 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

in May my band is playing on a bill with a band that features a member of THE LITTLE KINGZ (aka "The Biggest Little Band In The World"). also I found out recently that there's a midget wrestling venue 5 minutes from my apartment. it's a small world after all.

I don't want to go all PC on you or anything, but I am uncomfortable with many aspects of this thread.

did you read "Lords of Chaos"? apparently there are several mental metal bands in Scandinavia with short lead singers, like Abbruptum whose singer "It" is too evil to have a name.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The word "midget" is considered derogatory by most people.

I am not really eloquent enough to say what I want to say, but I really find these seemingly innocent threads upsetting. I find it hard to believe that what is going on here is not some sort of finger pointing and laughing. Why are people amused/obsessed with dwarfism?

My younger sister has mild achondroplasia. It was difficult to watch her grow up being stared at or laughed at or called names. She handled it remarkably well. She is 23 now and is still stared at and laughed at. It's only funny when she is the one making light of it.

marianna, Monday, 29 March 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If you do a search in the archives, you see people referring to dwarfs all the time as 'midgets' and making lots of jokes. If you search for other terms like 'faggot' or 'nigger' most results are discussions on racism, and the weight words carry, etc. When did little people become the last group it was ok to objectify on ILX?

marianna, Monday, 29 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd have to go a loooong way to call them "the last," and that's not a walk I'm gonna make with you.

It should go without saying, but obviously doesn't, that it's far less clear and common to view "midget" as inherently derogatory than it is "faggot" or "nigger." If you were offended by the thread, sorry, but honestly I'm not interested enough to put up a considered defense.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not just the terminology used, it's the laughing and additude as well. I say something only because this is the fourth or fifth time here that a remark has been made and it has annoyed me. I thought that maybe I should say something. 'Midget' is considered a deragotory term in the LP community, and it should be clear and common to view it that way.

marianna, Monday, 29 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The laughing and attitude inherent in a photograph? Or the laughing and attitude in a thread where the majority are non-human characters like leprechauns and Inch-High Private Eye?

I understand your sensitivity; when I was growing up, one of my closest friends had a medical condition he wouldn't talk about that stunted his growth, and a life expectancy not long past his teens -- and he was made fun of for it, and it hurt. Most people, I'm sure, know someone who was made fun of for their height, whatever the cause. But I really don't see that on this thread, either in intent or outcome, which more than anything became a free-association exercise about "people who are markedly shorter than average."

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt that this thread was like - lets post pictures of little people, cause they look different and it's funny - let's put them in a circus and observe them. And like I said, it was not the first occasion where someone has made a post/thread about it, so I finally decided to say something about it.

I'm sure your intent was not to be mean.

There is a group of midget wrestlers that are traveling around the states and they are some crazy little dudes. Make sure to check these guys at these two websites - www.GotMidgets.com and www.BloodyMidgets.com.
