I went to the shops for a magazine and a pack of gum, and came home with a mint green Jazzmaster!

What's your most extravagant impulse purchase?

OK, now I have to hide it in the flat for the next week and a half and somehow convince HSA that it was a birthday present.

But oh, it's minty green tremoloed MBV-swoop goodness! The big flat pickups! All those knobs and switches and I have no idea what any of them do! What shall I call it? I can't keep bowing down to it and saying "Yes, my J-Master!"

Bye-bye, big fat first check from my new job! Hello Camden Council knocking on the door wanting to know where the council tax money went!

Psycho Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hope Danny doesn't get jealous...

Though, honestly. I bought it as an incentive/bribe to force myself to start playing live again. Seriously.

Psycho Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Why you stop playing live, Kate?

Or is there back story to which I'm not aware?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for a start, my band broke up, so that kinda put the kabosh on it for a bit! I did a few solo show, but the guy who was doing the laptop-triggering and stuff for me TOTALLY FLAKED OUT and screwed up a whole bunch of crap I had lined up, and I just really got fed up and cancelled every gig I had lined up and quit everything and just lay low for a while, really hating music and trying to get my head back on straight.

But now I've got Pursey the laptop and J-Master the guitar, really, I have NO EXCUSE for not getting back into it. Oh, yeah, except for the "not having a manager any more, and being unable to organise my way out of a paper bag" problem, but still...

(Ow, this is really starting to hurt the tip of my finger I cut off last Xmas. My calluses are gone cause Danny's action is so low...)

Psycho Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So what tack should I take in explaining it to HSA when he comes back next week?

1) Oh no, I've *always* had this guitar! It was just in storage! (Alternate: "No, really, it's the Danelecto, I've just done work on it with the bits of that broken guitar we found last week...")

2) It was a birthday present from my mum. Honest.

3) Jazzmaster? Oh that's not my Jazzmaster, Kevin Shields just dropped by and asked me to look after it!

4) Shout "Look! Over there! Scanner, trying to make off with some of your oscillators!" and run away.

Psycho Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You're looking after it for a friend, of course. Isn't that the usual way to do these things?

However, for such a whopping lie, you best be good at lying. Are you?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"I was drunk"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you won it in a competition

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

a competition which only has one contestant, and the entry price is the cost of the jazz master.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Though, honestly. I bought it as an incentive/bribe to force myself to start playing live again. Seriously.
-- Psycho Kate (masonicboo...), March 28th, 2004.

AL-FUGGIN'-RIGHT, KATE! :D I'm damn happy for you. So what brought this new found motivation to get into it once more? Tell yr boy toy you found it in a dumpster...that it must be a sign.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 28 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you need no excuse besides saying the word 'rock' in various levels of intensity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And "ROAOOAOAOOAR"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that helps too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm absolutely rubbish at lying.

I have only two excuses.

1) ROCK

and

2) ROLL!!!

God, it's beautiful. I am the happiest girl in the world. (OK, and I'm even more pleased because of how cool the History of Bubblegum book that I bought as well this afternoon turned out to be.)

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just tell him you've always had it, and make him feel guilty for never noticing before.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The other thing I could try is, make him feel all guilty for forbidding me from bleaching my hair blonde again (even though he got the stupidest haircut this week!) and saying that I needed *something* to make me feel like a sexy mothaf*cka rock star again.

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite right. Also, you shouldn't have to change your look to satisfy him, the bum! (But I kid the HSA etc.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So what tack should I take in explaining it to HSA when he comes back next week?

"Oh hi, HSA, welcome back! Oh, by the way, look at this really cool Jazzmaster I got myself as an incentive to start playing again! It's great, and I hope you are happy for me. By the way, if anyone comes around looking for money I owe them, please tell them I died, or moved to Tanzania!"

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this a thighmaster?

Skottie, Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

HA HA HA! A thighmaster would probably do me more good than a Jazzmaster. Oh dear lord.

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(Side by side comparison, J-Master is a slightly different colour than the Danelectro, but he's still so PRETTY!!!)

I've been playing surf licks all afternoon, doing-doing-doing!

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

what kind of danelectro do you have kate and would you recommend buying one?

and also you probably shouldn't have done this btw.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally if I have to excuse myself for "wasting" money on a bitchin guitar they can go get fucked, but Cozen may know you etc better

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll both live and other such wonderful reasoning

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha it's totally the kind of thing I would do. but, y'know, shouldn't.

how much are these things, like £700?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummmm yeah, you've shaken my reasoning a bit now

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

don't flake out on me, who'll stick it to the man?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

KATE

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a mint green U2, I love the Danelectro more than life itself, I would highly recommend them to anyone, amazing guitars, incredibly durable, and unbelievable good value for money. (My only regret is that I didn't buy a 12-string at the same time I bought the U2.) I can't say enough good things about Danelectro.

The Jazzmaster was on sale for the unheard-of price of £499, that's why I bought it. I promised myself if they ever came down below £500, I would get one.

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Well a GENUINE Jazzmaster etc, that's a good buy. Tell him (if you MUST) you could get a profit off it on ebay, you maybe could

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

wow. I'd buy one at that price. um. I have a purple mex-tele and am looking fr a second guitar, ws thinking abt the U3 reissue. there are so many guitars in this flat: 2 jags, an SG, a tele woohoo.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry not meaning to sound all experty, just what I'd do

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(It's not one of the original 60s ones, it's a Japanese re-issue, but that's still an unbelievably good deal.)

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(I did get a free gig-bag and a free set of Ernie Ball super-slinkies in the deal, as well, so I'm a happy girl! Danny needs a new set of strings! woo!)

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm annoyed cos I nearly got one of those for like (UK TERMS) 50, but SUCH IS LIFE EH

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

God, it's beautiful. I am the happiest girl in the world.
Damm good excuse if you ask me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

tell him it was free with the magazine.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Or one of his Putneys had a baby.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, I think I just got an answer to the "Where does that weird lump in my wrist come from?" dilemma. After three straight hours of guitar playing, it's doubled in size again. :-(

When *IS* the NHS going to get around to giving me my surgery?

Super-Kate (kate), Sunday, 28 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Go Kate go! You need no excuse at all. I demand to see a picture of it!

(speaking as a member of the Jazzmaster club - red 1965 edition)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing like a new axe to broaden your playing habits. Mint green is what I would have gone for, too.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh. I don't know where HSA is going to sleep when he comes home. I ended up taking the J-master to bed. OK, I fell asleep playing it, it's not like I took it under the covers to hug and cuddle and kiss or anything, ha-HEM.

(Can't stop singing "I want you, J-master, I need you here with... MAY!" to the tune of "Britney". This is bad.)

Will have a picture when HSA gets home with the digital camera!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a guitar at Picadilly tube station once. It was £60, it subsequently got a great review in a music magazine, it's a gibson semiacoustic copy, I forget the make right now, and no it wasn't being played badly by a busker...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps direct him to an investment site, show him something like this:

Your musical instrument is more than just a piece of wood - it's an investment. In the last 25 years, top-of-the-line vintage guitars have outperformed the stock market, precious metals and other collectibles.

...and ask him "can we afford NOT to buy this guitar?"

winterland, Monday, 29 March 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, a jazzmaster for less that 500 quid! How could you not buy it? I'm sure hsa will understand. Yes, you should totally get back into playing out, writing etc. Yer a fucking rocking guitarist!

My most impulsive purchase = a rickenbacker 620-12. I had a load of money saved up for a holiday in czecho-slovakia w/3 friends, the holiday got cancelled, and I was looking in the music shop, SO WHAT THE FUKC ELSE WAS I GOING TO DO??!?!!1 The next day, I got a call - "we've saved the holiday!" Argh, but checho-slovakia was so cheap it didn't matter that I'd blown 600 quid of my holiday budget.

looking for another impulse buy? check out the mp3s!!

This local music shop has one of these hanging on the wall, and seeing as the whole range seems to have tanked quite badly up here, the price just keeps going down and down. At the moment it's down to 279 from 350. Umm, er....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

++ yeah, x=post w/winterland, all the guitars that I didn't like, & sold (squier telecaster, yamaha 1/2 electric, 1/2 acoustic thing, de armond jet star, shaftesbury rick 330-12 clone) well, I got more money for them than I originally laid out! CAN HSA CLAIM THE SAME OF MAX/MSP EH? EH??

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"You know that I won't stop until I get you... I want you, J-Master!"

I'm glad that you understand, Pash, and thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I don't buy guitars for the investment cause they tend to get trashed on the road. Or maybe I should save the (already fairly beaten up) Danelectro for the road and only use the J-master for recording and home gigs. (Though actually the Dan got most beaten up IN MY OWN ROOM.)

Jesus, a Rickenbacker... I owned one of those for about 2 weeks. I found a 12-string for some absurdly small amount of money when I was 20. My dad pawned it to pay the bills. Waaaahhhhh!!! (Where's that "I Hate My Father" thread?)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, no, me neither (w/r/t investment) but when one finds that an instrument doesn't make it, long term, (like the yamaha thing, it played really nicely, & looked great, like a semi-acoustic les paul, but we never got a decent sound out of the thing) it's REALLY nice when you get more money (that you can spend on other instruments) back from it. I tend not to sell synth anymore, b/c they're so worthless after a coule of years.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My best, was a Gretsch Country Club (made in 1961, I dicovered later), bought in 1985 for £450.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

congratulations! About five years ago I bought a '65 Jaguar (Lake Placid blue) ooff of ebay. I put 12 gauge flatwounds on it and it sounded dark and twangy. Alas my frets are now ruined and I need new ones.

The impulse buy was the three pick up 12 string (danelectro). I've been disappointed in it. It's probably my fault as I've never had it set up properly.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ooff?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooohhhh... Lake Placid Blue? Possibly the only colour cooler than mint green. Pity about the Dan, though. 12-strings can be so fiddly to get working properly...

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Jazzmasters & Jaguars are the sexiest guitars.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

jazzmaster : pinot noir :: tele : PBR

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"mint green"... it's SURF GREEN you heretic!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh.

HSA just called and was all "So has anything happened while I've been away" and I had to lie and go all "doo doo doo, nope, nothing happening here, really quiet, not done a thing!" and not told him about the guitar.

I am going to have to hide it. I mean, it's not like the last time he went away and I bought two pairs of trainers...

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh and thanks for the advice! i didn't get it until i was back home but very very much appreciated!)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)
