donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

??

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What does it mean, exactly? My understanding is that it's a contrived way in which characters in movies meet for the first time.

Prude (Prude), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never heard this phrase. WTF does it mean and in what context??

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

From Roger Ebert's Bigger Little Movie Glossary: ". . . the way for the two protagonists to meet in any romantic comedy movies. It usually involves the man walking down the street, minding his own business when all of a sudden, a female bowls into him, spilling all her packages. The two meet while he is helping her pick them up."

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well sure, that I can grok, but where is "meet cute" being used? Must be a US media thing.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger Ebert: "Hollywood has since time immemorial defined the Meet Cute as a comic situation contrived entirely for the purpose of bringing a man and a woman together, after which they can work out their destinies for the remainder of the film. The classic Meet Cute involves the hero and heroine crashing into each other outside a department store, while all of their Christmas shopping falls to the ground. He helps her pick up her packages, they start to talk, and the rest is history - or formula comedy, anyway."

xpost, sorta

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce: Google some reviews of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for a cross-section.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Tah ... makes much sense now. What a horrible phrase.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

therefore surely there's a band out there called that.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

prefaced by "The" of course.

The Meet Cute

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil-2 to thread!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well, isn't the phrase supposed to be annoying? I mean, it's there to denote an annoying movie device, what better way to signify that than to come up with a phrase every bit as cloying as the device itself.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe "meat cute" is better?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the millenium version of the m**t c*t*? Guy and girl accidentally knock into each other from perpendicular corners dropping their cellphones and spilling their lattes all over each other?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, sorry, I mean iPods.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 March 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

'Cute Meat' would be a better name for a band.

winterland, Monday, 29 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Eternal Sunshine didn't have a "meet cute" (by Ebert's definitions). They just met (twice) in somewhat normal ways.

Initially I read this as 'gay and girl,' which somehow seems appropriate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, Cured Meat

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

this device is so NOT annoying when used correctly! it's the very foundation of the romantic comedy, people! show some respect!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

With all the asterisks, I parsed that as "meat cunt".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no such phrase as "meet cute". Roger Ebert is just trying to get people to quote him so he can say, "I coined that term." But no one has ever used it. I'd sooner adopt Al Franken's "Kidding on the square".

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The term is totally from the 50s if not prior. Best meet cute ever -- roger & jessica in gravity's rainbow! she's bicycling thru the countryside, startled and falls coz of a bomb explosion, and he catches her!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

R: Hey! Gotta watch out for those earth rockers, dollface.
J: Fast hands, daddy-o.
