One of my very first records (received at xmas along with a record player, mono, pull back the arm to start the turntable), was "The Two Peters" e.p. Peter Sellers and Ustinov. "Mock Mozart" and "Phoney folk lore", both tracks made with voices/noises by PU. (harpsicord added to first), I can honestly say this inspired me to do lots of recordings by squeezing my tape recorder button halfway down so as to record but not erase...

I am gutted. He was a lovely man. I met him when he was chancellor of my Uni and he gave me my degree, afterwards I was lucky enough to sit at a dinner table with him and he told me rude stories. I wished he'd been my grandad, that would have been ace.

Until I opened this thread, I was thinking of Sir Patrick Moore. I'm not sure why I'd think he was Peter Ustinov. After my initial confusion, it took me quite a few minutes to remember Sir Patrick Moore's actual name. I don't think I've seen any films with the real Peter Ustinov in where he's not Poirot. I'm sorry he's dead. R.I.P.

Heh, that's right!

I grew up knowing him best with his Poirot turns, and I still think Evil Under the Sun is a brilliant confection -- Guy Hamilton directing, Cole Porter arrangements on the soundtrack, great cast and gorgeous scenery. Ustinov takes casual control of it all and has a blast.

Saw "Spartacus" just a couple of months ago! I was kinda annoyed by Ustinov/Laughton anachronistically describing Woody Strode as "the negro" - wouldn't "the Moor" or "Nubian" be more appropriate?

Nice Ustinov moment: Successfully completing the couplet "...the kind you don't bring home to mother" when prompted with "She's a very kinky girl..." during the "5 Questions" quiz on the old Craig Kilborn show.
