a question about networking and osx for the smartie-pantses

okay, here's my scenario. i have two computers, a powerbook and an older powermac g4. both are running panther. they're both connected to each other (and a dsl modem) via a netgear ethernet hub. when i want to transfer files and stuff between them i use appletalk, then i switch it off so i can use pppoe again, and thus access the internet.

my question is: is there anyway to do both at once? in a simple fashion? cuz i can't use appletalk and pppoe simultaneously, and it'd be totally more convenient to be able to transfer files and stuff without turning off the internet (the main inconvenience is running upstairs to change the network settings on the powermac, and then having to change them again).

thank you computer smart people.

i wanna do the thing with the whatsit on the network jazz.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

When you have it set to PPPOE and you click on "Network", what do you see?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I SEE BEYOND TIME

actually, i see a whatsit telling me my IP address. is that what you mean? or do you mean in the "ethernet options" series of tabs?

Mac OS X: Using AppleTalk With PPPoE

Apple Support, Monday, 29 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

well doesn't that just answer my question exactly.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean if you go into the finder and you click on "Network" on the side panel what comes up?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, i don't think it's working. (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and i get a folder called "servers" that only has my computer in it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Do both machines have Firewire ports? 'Cos as long as they're both running Panther I believe you can just string a Firewire cable between the two machines and copy the files across that way. No need for Appletalk or PPPOE.

the problem is the computers are on different floors, and i have a really long ethernet cable that's perfect. also i'm using that same cable for internet access to the upstairs computer. also, my fw ports are usually pretty occupied. thanks tho.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Doh, didn't see the bit about having to run upstairs.. Drat.

if you get a router, you can get rid of pppoe (that should work, I think)

i imagine. but i'm hoping there's some way i can do this with the setup i already have.

Ahem. You did say that one of them is a PowerBook. So why not carry the PowerBook up to where the G4 is and use FireWire target-disc mode?

Otherwise, use sharing over Rendezvous. Go to whichever machine you want to share and turn on Personal File Sharing. The Sharing system preference panel will tell you which URL to access it - something like atp://10.0.x.x. Go to your other computer and put that URL in the "Connect To Server" dialog. You'll be asked for the user name/password on the other computer and then you're home free.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

true, true. the thing is i want to be able to share files b/w both computers when there might be people using both of them, and share stuff like my iphoto libraries. i can access either via appletalk anyway, but i was wondering if there was some sort of overall solution that allowed me to "permanently" have access to both the computers and appletalk simultaneously. perhaps i am being unreasonable! (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

rendezvous! ok thanks sir!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

iPhoto 4 let's you share photo libraries over the local network much like iTunes 4.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

With the same "look but don't touch" restrictions?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ah, you don't have a router. I guess that's the part I was missing before.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

both are running panther

Well, then you'd better catch them.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna go hang myself.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

that didn't even make any sense, dude.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like running cattle, only fangier.

What you need to do is set up a second ethernet port (NB this is still using the same hole on the back of the computer and the same network)

From system preferences choose network and from the drop down menu choose network port configuration. Seleect Built in ethernet and duplicate it. Rename the one higher in the list LAN or something. Now set up a LAN style configuration in this. say IP 10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.2 for the next machine etc.) Subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, the rest is not important.

Set up the second ethernet port with PPPoE and hey presto that should work.

Best solution though is to get a ADSL modem that can connect without having to be configured by PPPoE over the network every time you use it. They are dirt cheap, £30.
