This thing you call "racquetball"...

Is it the same as English "squash"?

And if so...classic or dud?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

classic if its 1983 and you have a mustache, like my father did when he played it back then.

racquetball uses a larger blue ball and a different-style racquet, but yet it's similar.

oh yeah, and you get to wear devo-style protective eyewear.

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. it looks scary

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's awesome. One of the few sports you can have lots of fun by being really bad at. I love the chaos factor.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever seen "Splash"? they play racquetball in the early part of the flick.

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

splash or Big? or does Tom Hanks play raquetball in every one of his 80s movies?

oops (Oops), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone plays racquetball in every 80s movie. Especially if it's set in New York. You could make a movie just out of the racquetball scenes in Woody Allen movies.

Anyway Jordan OTM.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The racquetball court is where men discuss what's troubling them in 80's movies... like the steam rooms of an earlier era.

Where does Hollywood place men when they really need to "talk" now?

andy, Monday, 29 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the only sport I really REALLY enjoy playing. It's perhaps the only thing I ever get "aggro" doing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it the sort of sport you would play with your significant other? Doesn't sound like it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

depends. does she like hitting things really really fucking hard?

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to play it with my ex, but it's pretty aggressive. If you're used to that sort of thing, then it can be fun and even foreplay.

Also, it's different from squash in that the ball is way more bouncy and it ricochets all over the place. I suspect that it's far more dangerous than squash too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

im pretty okay at tennis, but racquetball scares the shit out of me. what if the ball hits my nose?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

does she like hitting things really really fucking hard?

No, only spiders.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think squash is more dangerous than racquetball--a racquetball is big enough and squishy enough that it's not likely to fit in yr eye socket, but a squash ball will do for ya.

Plus the hitting surface of a squash racquet is so much farther from your hand than on a racquetball racquet--I was always hitting walls with it...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

not true, that's why many racquetball courts require you to wear eye protection.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting point about the size of the ball, but again, a raquetball is ricocheting around you at consistantly high speeds. Also, raquetball at least *seems* much more balls to the wall aggressive. I know that the main gym at UC Berkeley has courts for both.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i like corner shots and dead shots. the moustachio'd 70s/80s dad thing rings all too true.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

saturday mornings when i was 7 or 8 or 9 were spent going with my dad to the Davison Racquetball Club. He'd play on his league, and i'd go to swimming lessons(eventually doing some league play myself).

eventually, he hurt his knee for a while, so racquetball was out.

To put this in historical perspective, i would go into the bar there and watch "Kidd Video" on their big screen. I remember they once did a version of Rockwell's "I Know it's Midnight..."

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ERADICATOR!!!!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Great game. I like it more than squash because the court's bigger. Squash courts make me claustrophobic. And yeah, it can be a little dangerous. I've taken racqetball shots on pretty much every part of my body, a couple hard enough to bruise and one that drew blood when it smashed my goggles hard into the bridge of my nose. In some ways, it becomes less fun the better you get at it, because then it just becomes about making kill shots and less about running around in circles.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, tennis is a better workout since you run more over the bigger court and also you don't have to go chasing after balls.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and wearing a cup is a good idea

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost, that should be "in raquetball, you don't have to go chasing after balls"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread title reminds me of this priceless TV moment:

Jordan OTM!

I am the Eradicator!

umm, ok.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, we've got a court booked for tomorrow night! More soon...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and what are the rules/scoring system again?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

if you give the other player a bloody nose, you win

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You get extra points if you play without any shorts on.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

When I played, it was the person who made the best squealing and cringing noises who won. Bonus points if you managed to actually hit the ball.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 1 April 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

do you know how hard and expensive it is to play Raquetball in NYC?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 1 April 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That's where I played! I had a membership to the Y. It was completely ridiculous.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 1 April 2004 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, the sport that requires extra grunting.

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Thursday, 1 April 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone saw the Casualty episode with the bloke with the squash racket in his gut will tell you squash is much, much more dangerous.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's because you Yanks are all pussies who sue each other at the drop of a hat.
