like what?
(my favourite game aged 10 was to trap a wasp in a jar, throw the jar around a lot, open the jar & then run away as fast as possible)

Dear Kurdt
I love you so much I decided to tattoo your face on my upper arm but I was too young to get into the tat parlor so I scratched it in myself with the ink tubes from one of those three-colour pens, and a shard from a broken bottle of Sarasoda. I shouldn't have done so much all at once, because I ended up passing out in Health class, and when I woke up I had a bruise on my face and the teacher sent me to the principal's office! Shit! What's even worse is I had to do it upside down and it doesn't even look like you, it looks like Vanilla Ice! Double shit! At least I know it's you, in my heart. Anyhow, when you have a minute holla back!
Love
Jess

there was a phase in jr high where drawing people in various stages of dismemberment was VERY cool, apparently

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was 12 in 1991. Back then, drinking a lot of creme de menthe and feeling up girls were both cool and dangerous.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the case again now for you, isn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did we all dream of Jess? In the cafe in Paris? Was the waiter's name...JEAN-LUC?

god, I thought I was making the nadir of '90s references.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

See, the thing is I only know that reference from an MST3K skit or two, I have NO idea of the original context, or if I do I've forgotten it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

some coffee ad about two women remembering they're trip to France and their waiter...JEAN-LUC!

You mean that's NOT a typical pre-teen boy activity?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I drew super-heroes myself. Though they were hitting each other with laser beams. That's kind of violent.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I copied characters from one of "How to Draw..." books by Tom or Ed someone with an alliterative name and drew them living inside an elaborate mountain castle. God I was gay.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually spent more time thinking up stories and creating new teams of DC heroes with old issues of Who's Who than actually drawing.

total tangent, but I've just realized that one of the few songs I could probably sing in their entirety is "Jeremy." The serpent was subtil, indeed. Classic or dud?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Boys are weird.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I still kinda wanna live inside a mountain.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And you, it WOULD have been General Foods International Coffee. I just remember the ads from the late seventies/early eighties, when it seemed both the tins and the people were orange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember having this calendar, I didn't write in it though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

in my "1996 official opus and bill calendar" there was some sort of weird code on all the days involving letters a-e and X's and 0's...WHAT DID IT MEAN?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Scientology will help you find the answer.

Don't make me do it ... OH NO TOO LATE ...

February 28, 1991

Last day of Feb. Tomorrow's Ian Kincaid's b-day. I'm not goin', though, cuz, for one, I wuzn't* invited, & two, they'z gonna be play'n Dungeons & Dragons practically the whole time. Man, what does everybody get outta that? It's STUPID!

Ground war started a couple days ago. Bush said last night that the war was behind us -- 'nother words it's over! But that's not for sure. Only 79 soldiers got killed, they say, cuz 28 were killed in a SCUD attack last Monday.

We'z got another 4-day weekend. I'z be goin' over to one of Mark's friend's b-day's cuz I don't know why**, but we seem to get along OK.

Spring training has started. The teams look like they're in pretty good shape, I guess. The Sox look cool in their new uniforms.

TOP 5 SONGS

1. All the Man that I Need - WHITNEY HOUSTON
2. Gonna Make You Sweat - C&C MUSIC FACTORY

[* this attempt at "black dialect' from a pudgy 12-year-old white kid -- because the black kids at school were cooler, of course (it's a direct way to distance myself from the D&D crowd, see?) -- really makes me cringe today]
[** well, because I had no friends of my own and hung out with my 9-year-old brother's friends instead]

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Here is the dome, back with the bass
The jam is live in effect and I don't waste time
on the mike with a dope rhyme
Jump to the rhythm jump jump to the rhythm jump
And I'm here to combine
Beats and lyrics to make your shake your pants
Take a chance, come on and dance
Guys grab a girl, don't wait, make HER TWIRL
It's your world and I'm just a SQUIRREL
Trying to get a nut to move your butt
To the dance floor, so yo what's up
Hands in the air, Come on say yeah,
everybody over here everybody over there
the crowd is live and I pursue this groove
Party people in the house
Move ... (Let your mind)
Move ... (Put me online)

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

They said "online"?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was 'groove me all night' or something

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the other three songs in your top 5, jaymc? I need closure on that entry! (also haha ian kink@id, what a character)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

From diaries circa 1994:

French exams not too bad, apart from oral with sickening Mrs T0rry and the Killer Eye-Makeup! My feelings about [name deleted to protect, er, myself] are mixed up again. Help!

Later that year:

[Same name deleted] wrote ‘love’ on my Christmas card, and only ‘from’ on others!!

And yes, that was about the most exciting thing that happened to me at secondary school.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The other songs in the top 5 aren't listed! It just ends there!

I don't think it's even my top 5, though; it's probably the Billboard chart, since I was obsessed with Billboard in middle school. (As in, I went to the library every week to make a photocopy of the Hot 100.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, Jess, I just dug out my 1991 diary and one of the first entries is about being at Hated practice (an abortive reunion attempt)when the war started and wondering which was worse -- war or the death of my band.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They said "online"?

Of course, the word online existed before the Internet yo. It just referred to something being connected to something else in a larger system, like a telephone, or a machine on a factory line or something.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

we never did confirm the first song to refer to the internet in it's lyrics in any way did we?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a bob dylan song.

You should all be happy that I don't inflict the (jr) high school poetry/song lyrics languishing in my parents' house on you all. (For an example, search the archives for the lyrics to "Bloody Murder".)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I mostly did a lot of weird drawings and paintings, no diary entries for me. My mom was cleaning out the basement last week and gave me a lot of them.

Jess!!!! I wrote "War or Peace" on my MAGIC THE GATHERING calendar that year.

Maybe it wasn't Magic, but I wrote that on some calendar.

Dear Jess,

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I found out how to do that left+right click trick in Minesweeper, and I couldn't stop playing it.It's really addictive!

It's great to see that girls are into our music too!

This thread is reminding me how I spent much of 1991 (aged 10) actually terrified and depressed about the possibility of nuclear war/the world blowing up. I think there was an entry in my diary about how much I hated Saddam Hussein for making me so scared all the time.

franny glass, Sunday, 2 August 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

our elementary school teachers made it sound like if we didn't fight the war, people were gonna come into america and eat us all. hell, even the weekly reader magazine that we read in elementary school had the war spun in such a pro-US light it was ridiculous! we did it for those poor kuwaiti people omg here's a pic of one...oil? oh um we'll see if we find any.

Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Sunday, 2 August 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)
