what's that one about Oh Oh Oh To Touch And Feel something...

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Qwerty UIOP, thats me! (sing it like a song). Thats theletters on a kbd, god knows why youd need to memorise it tho.

Also ROYGBIV for the spectrum of colour of course. Tho now I just think of that as a Boards of Canada song.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh it's Oh Oh Oh To Touch And Feel Virgin Girls Vaginas And
Hymens and it apparently is something to do with cranial nerves. god knows who told me that one

Oscar Had A Hit Of Acid (sine/cosine/tangent)

I wish I'd learnt this in pre-cal!! Oh man, this would've so helped!

I do recall very easily the ROYGBIV and the "every good boy deserves favor" ones. Especially ROYGBIV. :)

How to define a living organism:

Richard Of York Gained Battle In Vain

Why was that easy to remember though? Hm.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to remember the ones for the planet, but I kept on getting stuck around Saturn. It's far easier for me to recall all the planets than it is to recall the mneumonic.

My Very Energetic Mother Just ....Nine Pizzas
Mary's Violet Eyes Make John ....Proposing

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why was that easy to remember though? Hm.

Gave :)

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. Stupid ineffectual mnenomic. I did think 'gained battle' was rubbish grammar... although I still would have ended up with green so it works in that way.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I made up my own for the planets when I was a kid which served me well but now I don't know what to use for the S of Sedna!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

some japanese mnemonics (best said fast for comprehensive effect):

don't touch my moustache = do itashimashite
"you are welcome"

goatcheese osama = gochisosama (deshita)
"it was a feast" -- token of appreciation after eating a meal

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think you'd consider this a true mnemonic, but my algebra teacher taught us the distributive property in algebra by constantly referring to it as the "slut property", because the "thing" (variable) on the outside of the parentheses goes with every single "thing" (variable) on the inside of the parentheses. Hey, it got every single one of us to remember what the distributive property was all about, and I can still recall this lesson a little less than ten years after it was first taught.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit Leee why didnt I think of that one ;)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The spanish word for "pool" is "piscina", which is easy to remember because you "piss in a" pool.

Sengai, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No you don't!

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

lint (Jack), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, it's "My Very Energetic [altho I think I said Excellent] Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas."

Also: SOCATOA. Something to do with trigonometry. I forget.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

t kofschip. don't ask me what FOR you have to remember this, but it's a cute sounding word.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

SOCATOA is a variation on the Oscar/Acid one about sine/cosine/tangents.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

There's the Sesame Street song where Big Bird thinks the whole alphabet is one word, pronounced something like ab-ka-def-key-jekyl-menop-kir-stew-wix-ez. Which I guess is kind of a mnemonic in reverse or something.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

DR (&) MRS VANDERTRAMP is used to remember all of the French verbs which conjugate with "etre".

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it is SOH CAH TOA

we've got this far without anyone saying SWALK or EGYPT or POLO or HOLLAND, which shows ILX's declining standards, I fear.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom invented some strange mnemonic devices (that were SO BAD that they were actually effective) for states/capitals when I was in first grade. The one I remember (and probably always will) was for Concord, New Hampshire: "Just imagine someone pulling a large ham around on a long piece of cord! Concord, New Hamshire!!" There were FIFTY of these things. *puts face in hands*

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

fun? favour? fanta??? have you people never heard of FUDGE??

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Back in the day, wifeys would leave the box of OMO in their kitchen window so their luvvers would know that the Old Man was Out. Hubbies could leave the box upside down so their luvvers would know that the Old Woman was Out. My parents had hysterics when they came across OMO still on sale in Sri Lanka (along with Sunlight Soap). I think you can still get it in some African countries too.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh crap, now that I've got every good boy deserves fudge/does fine on the brain, I can't remember the one for the bass clef! I never really got mnemonics.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a wacky chem teacher in grade 12 who gave us little tricks to remember the elements (Lead = plum bum/Pb, Gold = "Ay, you! Gimme some gold/Au, and so forth). The weirdest one was Antimony. Anyone know it? Bet you don't. But I do. Even after all these years. How?

What happends if you push your Aunt? She goes SLIDING BACKWARDS. Thus, Antimony=Sb.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I made up BAFFLING SIP to remember the countries that had adopted the euro. Greece has joined in since then, which makes things more tricky. I suppose I could think of it as Hellas or something, so that it could be BAFFLING PISH.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Keeping Greece as a G and changing it to BAFFLING PIGS would be much easier, no?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But with the H you could say Baffling Hips!

How I want a drink--alcoholic, of course--after heavy chapters involving quantum mechanics.

(Number of letters in each word = pi)

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

should there be a word between "after" and "heavy" ???

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

after the heavy chapters ?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes, put in a "the" there. I've never needed to know pi to this many decimal places, so this has had no practical use for me, but I read it in a magazine at an impressionable age and have never been able to forget it.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

BAFFLING PIGS is good, but maybe racist.
