having seen lightning bolt last night (see here: Boredoms S/D ) and concluded that they're probably the best live band on the planet, i just bought the last two tickets for the 200-capacity gig at the ica on friday. however anna is busy, so i have spare ticket; as i'm an ica member it only costs £5.50. anyone interested?

Damn you, Julio.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

you two are welcome to fight for it. although haven't you seen them twice in the last week already, cis?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"going"

kephm, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, there are still some good fuckin bands from that city. there's just a creepy/scared/weird vibe now. bleak.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the mob should go back to running the city

kephm, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Buddy Cianci was in office when the whole Eagle Square / Fort Thunder mess went down.

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, let's not be revisionist re: the mob/buddy.

though ciccilline is an asshole, make no mistake.

two weeks pass...
I keep meaning to ask, how did this all work out...

I enjoyed them v. much at ATP

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

were you down the front, andrew?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm too old and fat to do mosh pits! I got close enough to hear 'em - how far did you venture in, Cozen?

I was expecting a 'heavier' vibe, but their music/interaction made me smile + headbang, two things I v. much like to do of a w/end. Getting us to sit down was a nice touch.

Because I'm so old and fat, Lightning Bolt don't half remind me of early 80s SST/Homestead etc. hardcore - my friend G said they sound like Happy Flowers, which I thought was spot on!

I actually like their DVD best of all...armchair punk!!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 17 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Me and toby got there (from the FAP) just as they were about to start. they weren't playing on the stage so some ppl could get on it to see it (I was too late for that, a few were allowed and that was it) so a circle gathered around, lots of headbanging and pushing but a nice feeling all round, really had to squeeze to get a look in and got there for a while but spent the second half out of the action and just smiling at the sound. The drummer got on top of his kit and screamed for a while, and I was expecting him to climb up the marshall stacks but he didn't.

Thought of 80s US hardcore thing as soon as they started the set (having not gotten around to hearing much from them before) and shortly after I noticed a couple of black flag t-shirts.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 April 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

how come random googlers never find this thread to dredge up?

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in the second row, andrew.

my flatmate was in the first row and is in the NME picture this week.

wow.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

just wow.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide if I'd like them on record. I really enjoyed the set I saw at ATP, but that's partly cos of the atmosphere of the place, and that it was a live show (there are loads of bands, like Mogwai, Part Chimp etc that I'd prefer to listen to live than at home).

I wished I managed to get a copy of that dvd though.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

they are bad on record.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's what I'd imagine the record to be.

It's like this other group i saw a few weeks ago, called Hella. They were amazing to watch live, mainly cos the guitarist and drummer were awesome musicians, but listening to them at home would drive me mad.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

hella are bad, period. I think.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

prog-hardcore innit.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno. I quite enjoyed them live, but that's partly just cos of watching them perform, and seeing their guitar playing and drumming.

but i really don't know how to compare all these noisy duos based on one listen.. they all sound roughly the same.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

lightning bolt:

first album: noisy, scrapy -> second album: more melodic, songy.

hella:

first albums: melodic, tom lehrer tunes innit -> latest album: scabrous noise.

hella want to be (what) lightning bolt (were). lightning bolt want to be hella. I think. roughly.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

so they should just meet in the middle, and form one messy 4 piece band.

imagine the noise from those shows..

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, you can't see me in those. I'm on the other side of the camera for some of them.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

two of my flatmates and one friend are in them. I'm in this one but only so little of me (bottom right: 3 (?) heads in is half my sweaty head).

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no photos of london shows though :-(

toby (tsg20), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes lightning bolt are my favorite band.
you have to see them live.
