And other statements that are really difficult to argue against, because they are possible true. Talk about them here.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have to buy any books, I spent around £35 a week on food and on average around £12 a week on booze.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I spend about as much on books as I do on alcohol, probably. But I'm not poor (well actually I am but it's my own fault and I've had plenty of free money* to spend on books and booze and synthesisers and things). I tend to be suspicious of other students who wail about poorness. They often don't have jobs.

Responding to generalisations with anecdotes isn't very interesting really is it?

*well not actually free

ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what food?

ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I spent at least £50-£60 on booze and booze-related things, compared to about £25-£35 a week on food and about £5 (if that). I very much doubt I was out of the ordinary.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(I never complained about my poverty, though...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a poor student.....but yes, I also have no job.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

In fairness they don't tend to actually wail that much.

ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I try to keep the wailing down to a dull roar :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I had almost no money in college, but...

My grandpa owned a tavern, and left a huge supply of hard liquor when he died. So all of my friends and I got free alcohol. My dad would even drive up to deliver a fresh supply.

Anyway, don't a lot of college students just go to parties and drink from someone else's keg? Because I did that a lot.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

when I was a student, I spent almost all of my money on records. Drugs and booze were usually free. Then again, I worked two jobs.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found the best way to earn extra pocket money as a student. Unfortunately it's not very regular.

I dj every fortnight, and I get paid £30 to do it. Which handily covers (pretty much) my going out expenses for the fortnight.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to stop doing this, as I really should be staying in to revise for my exams :(

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was a pooor student i spent about $40 a week on food, probably about $20 a week on booze. us musicians have it good though. free beers when we play mutherfucker.

now i am a rich student, and i spend most of my money fixing my car.

"Everyone knows about students wailing about how poor they are, but surely they spend more on alcohol a week than they do on books and food..."

i thought everybody do this. i certainly know of non-students who do exactly the same.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't spend that much money on drink but then again I spend more time complaining about how shit the night life in this town is and how painful the people I go to college with are.

fcussen (Burger), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The key issue here is really the cost of booze, not how folks spend their money. In Mexico beer is insanely cheap, and in the US it's expensive. Let's reverse that.

andy, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

a standard £30 on booze a week. have been known to do £300 on booze etc in a week. also spend vast amounts of money on books, but not ones for study.

anyway, last time i was on the dole i was on £40 a week. as a student it's £112 a week or therabaouts, which is very little if you have even the fainest zest for life. have worked but would rather be poor than return to a call centre which is the only place to earn any momney part time.
have known someone try the medical testing thing, but they did some peliminary tests on him and wouldn't take him.
i have absolutely no qualms about being a student. not much money, but it's far better than a grand a month and getting up at 8am every morning. i can go spend the day in the park practically whenever i like and fit the rest of my schedule around that.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent all my money on records/clothes/toys apart from the 40-50 per month on food, used the library like a motherfucker, occasionally ganked my friends for books and spent relatively little on booze until my final year (about 10-20 quid p/w).

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

bukowski - "beware those who either detest poverty or who are proud of it"

also, drink cheaply by sneaking whiskey wherever you go. if you don't go somewhere at night full of white shirted geezers in jeans and smart shoes the security is usually lax enough.

£15 broadband is cheaper than buying records, second hand bookshops are a delight (whole terms books for £25). food i spend anything from absolutely nothing to £70 a week.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

£300 on bouze in a week?! Fucking hell, what were you drinking?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 April 2004 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was a student it was £4 to see a film (= 1.5 hours or maybe 2 if you watch all the ads) and 40p for a shot of Tequila or 50p for a pint of cider (= a whole night's entertainment for the same price). CHEAP is a major deciding factor in what you do with your night out. I used to take no more than a tenner on my nights out, after booze, night bus and entry to indie disco. Sometimes I came home with change.

My average text book was £40 new = 4 nights out. There was only ever one copy in the library, almost always short-term loan and they introduced new books often enough to mean the second-hand bit of the Union shop only ever had obsolete stuff in stock. Most times I had no choice but to buy the book new. This was the reason I was skint all the time, not because I had a social life that relied on tanking up on Diamond White and Castaway before going out, then pouring skanky, watered down cider or whatever nail varnish remover they were calling Vodka for that week's promotion. RANT.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 April 2004 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

One guy in my class has to get a job to support himself and then had to miss lectures to do his shifts. I mean, really.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 April 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This year I've spent $500 on books and $5 on booze. (I guess I'm unusual in that respect, but it would be nearly impossible/worthless to spend $500 on booze where I go to school.)

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I did £100 a day on booze and food occasionally. But then again I was insane.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

records or gigs. I used the library for books.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The books I have to buy for classes are usually just paperback novels I can buy used for $3 or get from the library, so I probably spent about $50 on books this semester. I spend maybe $10 a week on food, because I can get free bread and granola and stuff from work if I want to. Booze...I don't go to bars that much, and a bottle of Old Thompson is only $7, so yeah. And cigarettes are only $4 here. I'm still really poor, but I don't really care.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Records/shows totally, till I started working at the radio station, and even then I still managed to find ways to piss away my scholarship cash. Ahh, the good old days etc

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have yet to buy a book.
