I like the red pepper flakes the best, for whatever reason -- but yeah, just sprinkle em on, making sure some of them get in the vinegar (or just stir everything around if you do). Don't coat it, like with blackening spices or anything like that, or ... ow. But a healthy dose, I'd say (depends on how spicy you like things, I guess).

i made my own berbere powder, using a recipe i found on an ethiopian website plus a bit of guesswork. it involved grinding together something like 12 different spices. smells amazing. not too hard to do if you're used to making indian food all the time
