Sweepstake!

Grand National day approaches and I've drawn Clan Royal in the office sweepstake. Not bad - it's currently 2nd favourite at 10-1, but with the Grand National there's just no telling. The only time I've ever won anything was two years ago when virtually every horse fell and by some miracle I was left with the winner (and fifty quid).

Are you betting on it this year?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

bah, not a proper horse race, only for freak horses, grumble grumble...

oops sorry, seemed to be channelling my grandfather there for a moment...

i remember when your horse won L, we were at camber weren't we?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and unfortunately I couldn't get a round in because I didn't get my money until I went back to work. What a shame :)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 April 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I drew Takagi in the office sweepstake. I've no idea if this is a good thing.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

How long have I been your grandad, Carsmile? The Grand National is to horse racing as New Year's Eve is to drinking. Amateur's night.

Anyway, Gunner Welburn.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man mine is the "scotmail boy" or something and it's 100-1, i'd feel shit if i actually win the sweepstake when i could have just won 200 quid at the bookies

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, the answer is to put a couple of quid on at the bookies as well.

I have yet to decide where my £2 is going this year. None of the papers seem to be offering free bets this year, which is usually the source of my betting funds for this.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 3 April 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! Second place and a tenner. My Grand National record:

2001: Bet £2, won £50
2004: Bet £1, won £10

Total = £5 up

Gloat (Madchen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

£57 up I mean

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I put two £5 bets on. One was a non-runner and the other was 8th. It was called Bear On Board, which I thought was nice.

Amberleigh House and Clan Royal are boring names.

Esther won a tenner on Clan Royal in her office sweepstake too.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for me and the mister - we had £5 each way on Amberleigh House.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't bother this year, it's the worst race to bet on anyway. I was meeting a friend so we didn't watch it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Racing rockists are the worst of all. It's a carnival!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

FENCE 25 (Valentine's)
Pulled up: Alcapone

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a racing rockist, just a broke tightwad. the postal strike has deprived me of about 500 euro.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Bear On Board in the office sweepstake, but was canny enough to put a little each way bet on Amberleigh House. About 9 or 10 quid up overall.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Amberleigh House and Clan Royal are boring names.

And you are frightfully twee for picking Bear on Board.

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it said 'Bare on Board' and was being sexy.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Bare and Bored.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm home alone.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it said 'Bare on Board' and was being sexy

should that be Behr on Board?

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 4 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That really is not sexy.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I had bear on board in teh office sweep.

Also Tim Lovejoy on Soccer AM tipped BoB "because it sounds rude"

chris (chris), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what happenthed to my horse?? it kind of disappeared :(

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It went home...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 5 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You appear to have a non-starter, Ken

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The front page of the Times had a scientific article on which horses you should bet on. It worked out that Amberleigh House and Clan Royal would come first and second. My dad took their advice. Lucky bugger.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Must be a very new method or just lucky this time - the wonder/bastard thing about bookies is that any method that works gets absorbed into the odds.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Revive!

This year I have Heros Collanges, which Ladbrokes.com puts at 40/1.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I have 'Just In Dept' and 'Take The Stand'

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

haha i was just about to revive this! i'm waiting for my draw to come round and am nervous.

I hope I get one with a funny name

ken c (ken c), Friday, 8 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

the lady doing our sweepstake accidentally printed off last year's list of horses (it was still top of the google if you look for grand national sweepstake you see), but she realised in time (phew). i haf:

Polar Red

i might haf to have a punt on JOLY BEY though, because it sounds like a happy devonian...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 8 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

haha the guy who does it this year can't be bothered to cut out bits of paper with numbers so we just got to CHOOSE, but we were trusted not to look at the odds.

i was hoping i could choose one with a good name, except all the names were crap. so i got IZNOGOUD instead. 66/1 apparently

ken c (ken c), Friday, 8 April 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Clue's in the name, Ken, clue's in the name.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Bah. Nosing into second with three fences to go, then faded into eighth place. I'm still £56 up, mind.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I drew Innox which dashed my hopes by getting into 2nd right near the end and then falling away.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

for a brief moment i was going to choose simply gifted as well. ah well
