I just have A) Friends I would get up in the middle of the night to bail out of jail; there's maybe four of them, and B) All the rest. No further ranking necessary.

I don't do it really with individual friends though I do have opinions on certain groups of friends. Without consciously ranking them I might think "oh they're not really the best people to be spending time with" about certain groups of friends.

But I do, now, give them letters of the alphabet, whose order is perhaps arbitrary and non-evaluative.

I've made lists way in the past, in times of severe insecurity. I even played this game once, the "who is my friend game" when I graduated college, I refused to call or write anyone, I was curious who'd call or write me. After the summer enough people had gotten in touch with me that I felt liked. Hey, give me a break, I've got some problems, and at the time I was living in my parents house in rural new jersey attending Raritan Valley Community College to get my final 3 credits for my degree...

I have friends I could call, and friends I wouldn't call because I'd feel intrusive. Perhaps they're more acquaintances? I don't know, it's a purely practical distinction.
