Ranking your friends

...in terms of how much you like them. Do you do this? Have you ever done this? Could you do this? Is it a terrible idea? Take it away, ILE!!

(NB just to be clear, contributors can interpret the word "like" however they choose.)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I make them wear lapel-pins "Friend #1" "Friend #2" etc.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, yes, yes, yes

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Huck, do you get to the point where you get to "friend #152, friend #153, acquaintance #1, person I tolerate #1, person I avoid #1, nememsis (no number required)"?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you do this? Nope
Have you ever done this? Dunno, maybe when I was about 8 or something
Could you do this? I suppose I could, but it'd be pointless
Is it a terrible idea? YES!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this thread title was spelt wrong. Imagine if Jonathon Ross had started it.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

what's a fwend tho?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I just have A) Friends I would get up in the middle of the night to bail out of jail; there's maybe four of them, and B) All the rest. No further ranking necessary.

andy, Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with andy. i mostly use my cellphone speeddial numbers as a ranking system. it drives me crazy.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

JEL HAS KILLED MY THREAD.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, do people do actually this?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Jel is now Friend #4500321

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

mark, I dunno, that's why I asked. My suspicion is that ILXors are among the most likely people to have done so. And hell, even if they don't now, childhood anecdotes, yo?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I rank and list everything. It's a compulsion.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a BEST friend and a BOY friend and then some other lovely friends too.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever done this, it is too much like a list and I hate lists almost as much as I hate beards.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You would have loved my beard. I still miss it. It was a classy beard.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I do this so that I can perform chi-squared analysis on my friends.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry mark!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I do this to debase and humiliate my intellectual inferiors.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My suspicion is that ILXors are among the most likely people to have done so

What all 500 of them?

I don't do it really with individual friends though I do have opinions on certain groups of friends. Without consciously ranking them I might think "oh they're not really the best people to be spending time with" about certain groups of friends.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't rate them.

But I do, now, give them letters of the alphabet, whose order is perhaps arbitrary and non-evaluative.

the bluefox, Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 'A' top or bottom?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't rank them so much as think of them organized into a Venn diagram.
And Mark, somehow I knew this was a thread by you.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Top.

But it's arbitrary, etc. Right?

the beebfox, Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to pretend like I had a list and whenever I got mad at people, i'd say "I'm crossing you off my list, you know, my list of friends"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I said that to a friend last week when she was away on holidays for my birthday! "you're totally off my friendlist". Does anyone here have an actual list?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an Excel spreadsheet.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I've made lists way in the past, in times of severe insecurity. I even played this game once, the "who is my friend game" when I graduated college, I refused to call or write anyone, I was curious who'd call or write me. After the summer enough people had gotten in touch with me that I felt liked. Hey, give me a break, I've got some problems, and at the time I was living in my parents house in rural new jersey attending Raritan Valley Community College to get my final 3 credits for my degree...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My friendlist shrinks daily. I need to leave Dublin.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Or perhaps start using an Excel spreadsheet.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the second dimension will really get your social life going.

Adam Wayne (AdamWayne), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

a friend used to rank his friendships on a scale of one to ten. i was apparently a '7' - weird thing is, he had no problem telling people.

Grell (Grell), Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope. Never. Maybe this is why I'm such a shit friend.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 1 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have friends I could call, and friends I wouldn't call because I'd feel intrusive. Perhaps they're more acquaintances? I don't know, it's a purely practical distinction.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 1 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

andy upthread otm.
The rest aren't friends. I don't know what they are. Other things that breathe.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 2 April 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I once did this. And now I have no friends.

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)
