The Simpsons on Strike

I don't know about everyone else, but there is something sickeningly greedy about this industrial action.

"According to the Hollywood trade paper Variety, the dispute centres on a demand by each of the actors that they be paid $360,000 (£194,000) an episode instead of their current $125,000."

The episodes only take a day to record and its not as though the show is that funny anymore. Greedy, greedy bastards.

kelly, Friday, 2 April 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Its also the most popular and longest running show in US TV history and they dont make as much as people like the "Friends" cast by a MILE, so good on them I say.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 April 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I support them. The voices are still genius. It's not their fault the writing kinda sucks now.

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 2 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping they were striking because they were embarrassed to be associated w/such poor writing. Not that that makes much sense.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 2 April 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's fair that they should get more cash. The fact that they're not the ones who appear visually on the show means that they lose out on all the endorsement opportunities that are available to e.g. the Friends cast.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder how much kelsey grammer makes per frasier episode.

Grell (Grell), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how they divide the payments then, since 3 of the guys do the voices for 75% of the characters...

Michael Dubsky, Friday, 2 April 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Simpsons" isn't the longest-running show in US history! That would be either "Days Of Our Lives" or "As The World Turns".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for them. I hope the show gets cancelled as a result of this.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

he probably just did Sideshow Bob for a packet of Oreos and a sample of scalp polish

good to see The Simpsons in such fine company...okay i'm done now.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Simpsons is the longest-running animated show in US history, having beat out the Flinstones.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Longest running prime time comedy in a couple of more years, I gather. It ain't got Gunsmoke beat yet, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, Scooby Doo has been on since 1969.

Grammer got ~1.6 million per episode. Ray Romano gets more, inexplicably.

The amount that Simpsons has made for Fox and for Jim Brooks compared to what the actors received--actually, it doesn't compare. Good for them. Hold out for more dough!

Skottie, Friday, 2 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't this sort of thing usually signal that there's only about another season left in the show? Anyway, I would understand if they didn't want to do it anymore given the state of the show and how long it's been on. And if they're willing to walk away, might as well as for a ton of cash first.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It almost happened 3 years ago but they averted it.... To be fair to the producers, it's like 5 hours of work per year per actor or something ridiculous like that.

Although they refused to pony up a few extra dollars for the woman who played Ned's wife (she couldn't afford to travel to the studio and they wouldn't pay for her to do it remotely). Which is why they just killed her character off.

Anyway, I hope the show gets cancelled. Or they just get different voices (which would be fantastic).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for them. I hope the show gets cancelled as a result of this.

Maybe that's what they're trying to do. Fox certainly wouldn't give up on this still-profitable franchise, but it would seem the writers gave up a few years ago. Maybe the voice-actors are trying to euthanize the show.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

All the voices should now be done by Gilbert Gottfried and Judi Dench.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair to the producers, it's like 5 hours of work per year per actor or something ridiculous like that.

Wait, what is?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

and that's a silly way to look at it, it only takes a moment to hit a home run, too, or an hour to model at a runway show.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it only takes a moment to hit a home run

but, theoretically, it takes months and months of practice and training.

or an hour to model at a runway show

but, theoretically, it takes months and months of, uh, practicing wearing clothes and walking at the same time.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that puking takes up more time that you'd think...

Kingfish Hypercolor (Kingfish), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The question is really just how much money The Simpsons is generating, and what percentage of that money should go to the voices vs. the animators vs. Matt Groening vs. Rupert Murdoch. I'm all in favor of everybody but Rupert getting a bigger cut.

spittle (spittle), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Do celebrity actors get paid too much? probably yeah. But these guys don't get near as much as other actors on equally successful shows. so more power to 'em.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, Scooby Doo has been on since 1969.

Scooby Doo has not been in continuous production since 1969.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair to the producers, it's like 5 hours of work per year per actor or something ridiculous like that.

I'm reminded of the scene where Krusty blows into the studio where Lisa's about to voice Lisa Lionheart, and rams through all the lines his new doll's going to say in about 12 seconds.

I am also reminded, if they cancel the show because of this, of Homer yelling, "Oh, so I don't get to play a cartoon dog, eh? Well, you can cram it with walnuts, ugly!"

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you can cram it with walnuts, ugly!

thanks for making me burst out laughing in the computer lab. Forgot that line.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too. And that's one of the great ones!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

longest running show in US history = Meet the Press, which started in 1947.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I did mean longest running animated TV show, my bad (and sitcom too, is that right?). I dont think its hit that point yet but soon will, but Im going from memory.

I tell you what Im sick of - people bitching about it "jumping the shark" or being "shit writing" or whatever. I still enjoy some of the new shows, GET OVER IT WHINERS.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the last nu-Simpsons episode i saw was actually pretty good!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a nu-simpsons repeat this week where Milhouse did the "Wassup" Budweiser Advertisning Campaign Slogan and found it morally reprehensible. Way too much crap pop-culture references on the Simpsons these days. It feels like they giving it all their tacit aproval instead of jabbing at it from a far. If I am a whiner so be it.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

*here comes Leee with jive talk about "heart*

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Quit that, oops!

Hey if people dont like the Simpsons now, fair play to y'all. I just dont understand people vehemence in banging on about how bad it is now, it has almost become fashionable to say you DONT like it anymore. This negates the years of bloody brilliance this show's done, IMNSHO. But, this argument's been done to death I realise, so I'll leave it at that. I think they are criminally underpaid when you think how much Fox would be making off the show, and not to open a can of worms but I'd hate to think how little the actual grunt animators in Korea are (not) being paid...

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Koreans live on just tea and rice.

But what about the fact that it feels like every 5 episodes there's a sleb guest who happens to be detrimental to the episode?

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"hey look everybody, it's our new neighbors colin farrell and downtown julie brown" "aye carumba"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Simpsons at 50-75% of what it used to be still funnier than most TV Vs. The higher the peak the more shameful the fall

Huck, Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Every single Adult Swim program more or less kicks the bejesus out of nu-Simpsons. (I think most of them being 15 minutes long helps.)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 3 April 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree slebs for the sake of it grates. But it always has, I really dont think thats a newer thing. The only celeb ep I can bring to mind as loving was John Waters as John, and he wasnt even technically playing himself (ok he was but you know what I mean)

The whole "hey look REM are playing in the garage" etc thing is silly yes.

But of the new season Ive seen there hasnt actually been that much of the lazy get-out-of-jail sleb tricksterism.

The Eva Peron episode was really funny. The robo wars one wasnt too bad. OK the homer mauled by bear one was lame because it kinda didnt go anywhere. I am having trouble thinking of other examples aregh.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sub-question also - define nu-simpsons pls cos I cant see the jumping (the shark) off point myself.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Simpsonian cogniscenti will point to sober Bernie.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Saturday, 3 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, Scooby Doo has been on since 1969.

That doesn't count. There were only 17 or so episodes made (IIRC), and they've been rerun over and over since then.

longest running show in US history = Meet the Press, which started in 1947.

1946, actually.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sober Barny you mean Leee? Yeah that is kinda weird. Maybe Maude dying? Maybe just these last 2 seasons? I dunno.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah so goes my attempt at satirizing a Simpson elitist who knows naught of what he speaks.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Saturday, 3 April 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh rofl sorry :D I was wondering why you of all ppl got it wrong ;P Im a doofus.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the celebrity guests used to be so great - "Ohh Nooooo, Bette Midler!" etc.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Would the end of The Simpsons clear the way for the resurgence of Futurama?

Aimless, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

didn't that show already have its resurgence?
it does make me upset that The Big Bang Theory is huge while Futurama never really "made it"

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

It didnt? Its on its 6th season and doing boomingly afaik?

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

7th season, rather

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

For the latter day Simpson haters, do you watch the show anymore? Like hoping that the next episode will be a return to form? or have you just given it up all together and just assume that it is still sucking.

Jeff, Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

it's on Comedy Central, still kind of a cult show aint it?

frogbs, Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

Little of both, for me. I havent stopped watching by choice - nu-simpsons in Aus is patchily delivered at the best of times due to our shitty TV scheduling anyway, and for a long time I didnt have a working TV either. That said, every newish ep I have seen, I've been apalled by, and I'm pretty lenient. I dont like the look of the computerised animation these days much either. Which is dumb, cause I love Futurama and its all done in 3d.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

i watch it 'cause it's on and it's better than everybody loves raymond

the men who stare at gotye (electricsound), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I've seen a new episode in years. But I don't really watch the reruns like I used to either.

Jeff, Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't this latest news just the first shot of brinksmanship from Fox? Can't help but feel deeply cynical about this.

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

i watch it 'cause it's on and it's better than everybody loves raymond

It comes on right after that, which is so annoying cos theres a half hour gap btwn big bang theory and simpsoys, so I end up turning off the tv and missing simpsons althegther most the time.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

bargleb nakafldf typos.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

Its also worth noting that the Futurama crew went through this a season ago (or was it 2?), and there were rumours the revival would not happen because all the actors wanted a lot more money. And those guys dont make anywhere near what Castallenata and co do.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

even folk who had defended the show up until recently, said the Movie sucked, which i took to be a sign. been crappy since Season 7/8.

piscesx, Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

See, I thought the movie was mostly solid, whereas the last several seasons have been so tremendously disappointing, with rare exceptions. And I'll defend up through about half of Season 11.

You people are supposed to be some kind of music culture intelligentsi (Phil D.), Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yes the movie sucked, but I dont think the show got bad til after S12 (some of S13-16 are watchable but a lot less)

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

Ppl who say it got bad after S8, I dont get. Thats a lonnnng time back, and there's been plenty of hella solid material in S9-12 ("this little wiggy", "viva ned flanders", all the halloween eps...)

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

The last episode I watched was the one where they went to Brazil. That one really stands out in my mind as the template for shitty late period Simpsons episodes.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

I didnt mind that one, the bit where homer's kidnapped was p funny, with him getting stockholm syndrome and costing them a ton of money cos he ate so much.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

I still watch the Simpsons. Pretty fuckin terrible but every episode still has like four of five belly laughs that are better than anything on The Drew Carey Memorial Meta-Sitcom Tumblr-Bait Childish Gambino Half Hour or whatever that horseshit show is

even something like the grunge episode which is widely and rightly seen as a nadir has the line "it's statements like that that make people think women are stupid" which is probably the best line on the show for like a five-year period around the ep

that Australia ep just came on last week, I was surprised how funny it still was. "Bullfrogs!? That's a funny name...I would've called 'em Chazwozzas!"

frogbs, Thursday, 6 October 2011 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

Some of the newer episodes haven't been terrible, but most of them are. I remember in particular the episodes where Patti "comes out", the iPod episode, and another "Simpsons in the future" episode that had Homer living underwater or something, can't remember a single joke I liked from any of those. But they do seem to do meta-humor somewhat well, though I can't help but think they're just trying to ape Family Guy at this point.

The joke in the new episode where dude's military training involved fighting the guys from The Warriors and the Penguin from the Batman TV serious, with no real joke, was STRAIGHT Family Guy aping to the point of making me cringe

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 6 October 2011 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

The last new episode I saw was still a few years back, and it was based on Heavenly Creatures. Lisa and a friend were mutually obsessed with James Blunt and they wrote about an imaginary fantasy land. As their friendship lacked any sexual tension or matricidal tension, it really made no sense why their parents didn't want their friendship to continue. "That girl was...weird," Homer said. I guess Lisa's friend was supposed to be the Melanie Lynskey role because her hair was black? Which made Lisa....still Lisa. It was baffling. I think about it sometimes, how mot funny it was, and what an odd idea it was to lift the PG-rated elements only of Heavenly Creatures.

That's what has made me really uncomfortable with the new Simpsons episodes I have seen, they seem to be doing Family Guy style comedy that seems nasty and out of place on the Simpsons.

I'm curious about that myself, but the tv landscape was so so different in 1990-1997 (the controversy over Bart being an "underachiever and proud of it" compared to a horse seemingly ejaculating on Stan in American Dad). And for those of us who were Life In Hell fans prior to the Simpsons, it was amazing/improbable that something like that would ever appear on tv.

ehh, don't know if I agree with that. pretty much all the repetitive FG jokes where its supposed to be "so unfunny, it's funny" are atrocious. the Chicken suit guy is a little different because at least they try to ratchet that up every time. yes they show this at the gym a lot.

South Park is really the ultimate gauge of this. I remember that first episode where Kyle unleashes a stream of bleeped-out obscenities being such a huge deal and generating tons of controversy, as though South Park was going to destroy the entire world. The stuff they do now is way more explicit and uncensored and nobody really bats an eye at it.
