With all the glasto hoo-hah i nearly forgot that i sorted this out yesterday as well.

It's The Chapel Bar, 29a Penton Street, Islington, again, it's still free and don't forget the happy (three) hours.

As you may guess from the title, this night is a companion to popular, so it'll be ALL UK number ones, ALL THE TIME.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ouchie, we land back from Honeymoon at 8.30 that morning and have work the next day.....

Yeah, I'll be there

chris (chris), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a fella on POPMASTER this morning who used to OWN every number one.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah there's a picture of such a man in the last Guinness Book Of Hit Singles. It made me think several times about my life path I can tell you.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I STILL own every number one and it's done me no harm at all!

If I can come to this I will make a point of requesting the Temperance Seven and Typically Tropical ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not playing Typically Tropical! Unless I get Typically Drunk.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well what about any one of Frank Ifield's FOUR number ones then?

(I am REALLY looking forward to your analysis of these)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

At some point (probably a whole week) before this happens I am going to listen to all 50 or so CDs of #1s to pick out possible playlists and make sure all the tunes work. Frank Ifield will be 'given his due' then, I am sure at the end of all that I will be an impressionable wreck and will happily OK any Tom Dick or Boyzone.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

carsmile i am mailing you

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OH GOD NOT BOYZONE!!!!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Westlife, then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Goombay Dance Band must replace Andrew WK as final track

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I promise to dance and have fun this time as well

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK stevem, shurely AWk has not had #1 record? Therefore CANNOT be played hurrah!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Dolce

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaddap you face.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this means that The Archies will finally get an airing?

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

potential buzz-boosting final tune mentalism likely to feature a certain Dexy and his midnight runners then I reckon....or Bo Rap! fookin ell, sixth form flashbacks already...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this means that The Archies will finally get an airing?

pitch it down a notch, turn the treble right up and it'll sound just like that Mary Chain version in your mind Kate :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitch it up a notch and run it through a distortion pedal and it will sound just like the new Busted version in my mind...

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The first hour should be all pre-1964 tunes, and you should invite lots of OLD PEOPLE

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.ci.cerritos.ca.us/cityserv/seniors/dance.jpg

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

bring yer parents!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh me oh my. That's be classic. Can you imagine an ILX Folks Fap? I have never met any ILxor's folks, but the mind truly boggles.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

can we all have our birthday number one tune played?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally, it's Club Dad.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Club dud

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You're telling me.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No club that has a half-decent chance of playing 'Yes Sir I Can Boogie' could ever be called Club dud.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

and it can't be Club Dad either cos Eric Clapton's never had a #1 single.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

can we all have our birthday number one tune played?

this would mean 'Rivers Of Babylon' i'm afraid

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Seasons in the sun...

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You're lucky. Mine is Bridge Over Troubled Water. Boney M is SOOO much better than Simon & Garfunkle. :-(

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'Wherever I Lay My Heart (That's My Home)'. So, no, don't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Heart of Glass!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

God, that's scary. I remember dancing around to Heart of Glass in the back of a pick-up truck. With future trustafarians and shaggy dogs.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Honky Tonk Women

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/cont/choose.html

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is Cum On Feel The Noize.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is bastard Summer Loving from Grease.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Grease fever blessed my birth with You're The One That I Want... I cannot do midweek jollies but this sounds like fun, hope it goes well!

Archel (Archel), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, I forgot we are cursed Grease sisters.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

fuckin' a, mine's Uptown Top Ranking!

sgs (sgs), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Waaaaah I want a cool birthday tune!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, at least you're not stuck with Paul ruddy Young.

And it could be worse - it could have been off the soundtrack to Grease 2...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I Will Survive.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

optimistic given the ruin prospects for next week deary

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tighten Up (in America)

What a coincidence, my all-time favourite record.

I will try to come to this early doors as a dry-run for going to Club Carsmile early doors.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Lonely this Christmas

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My birthday #1s:
UK: Tears Of A Clown by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles.
US: War by Edwin Starr

I win.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame hstencil.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

for the record I can recall playing

Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Women
Sandie Shaw Always Something There To Remind Me
Zager & Evans In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus)
Sweet Blockbuster
Timelords Doctorin' The Tardis
Wizzard See My Baby Jive
Belinda Carlisle Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Tina Charles I Love To Love (did I play this or imagine it?)
Baccara Yes Sir I Can Boogie
Kelly Marie Feels Like I'm In Love
Freda Payne Band Of Gold
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich The Legend Of Xanadu
Olivia Newton-John Xanadu
Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers Why Do Fools Fall In Love

and ISTR Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby, and the Kinks - You Really Got Me.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i was really shy of playing stuff from 80s on, for some reason

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom and I commented on how 80s-lite the night was while you were playing - it was pretty low on 80s stuff altogether which is surprising when you think about it and NO ONE PLAYED ADAM AND THE ANTS!

I once spent an afternoon sitting in a boat on a lake in France in the sunshine with a girl I met on the holiday and a portable CD player with no other CDs except Don't Call Me Baby. It got played about 14 or 15 times... hearing it yesterday brought back happy memories.

I wish I could remember what The Legend Of Xanadu sounds like.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I need to apologise for sexually harrassing Dave B. It's upsetting to see a man cower like that.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Because We Want To is better than all the Spice Girls songs put together, I've decided.
A bit like saying that Admiral Doenitz was an improvement on Hitler.

-- Marcello Carlin (marcellocarli...), May 13th, 2004.

A bit like that, but, at the same time, not.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

'Stand And Deliver' was played Matt!

Alan also played 'Can The Can' i think, dos quatro por favor

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone played "Stand and Deliver", I'm sure of it.

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My memory of last night is very hazy towards the end - your end-of-night post upthread made me realise that I didn't leave during BoRap at all because I'm sure I remember Going Underground and Hoots Mon (mostly going "aaah, that's what it is!" during the latter).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you left either before or during Hoots Mon i am 90% sure (?!)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

pete played devil gate drive, so i wussed out of can the can. i should have stuck to it tho.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine went something like:
Billy Don't Be A Hero
Atomic - Blondie
Whatchoo gonna look like with a Chimbley On
Stand And Deliver- Adam And The Ants
Hanging Tough - New Kids On The Block
Fame - Irene Cara
Where Do You Go To My Lovely - Peter Sarstead
Sterrts Of Paris - Winifed Atwell
Jailhouse Rock - Elvis
The Real Slim Shady - Eminem
Devilgate Drive - Suzi Quatro

And about five others I do not remember, but it was early and no-one danced.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the ragtime piano thing?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the attwell song is "poor people of paris" innit? (x-post: which was the ragtime piano thing)

you also played HAVE I THE RIGHT by the honeycombs which is a TRUE CLASSIC

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was Tom that played 'Stand And Deliver', quite late on - or did you go on again Pete?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

proto-glam roXoR

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so, no "Barbados" after all? :(

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Blondie and Madonna only acts to be played twice?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently including justify my love, which wasn't actually a number one.

no mouldy old dough either by the looks of it.

you meddling kids today don't understand the meaning of true romance.

Moaning Moaney from Moaney-sur-Moan, Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve corrected himself upthread (it was Like A Prayer not Justify My Love)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha holy shit, yeah so I thoguht this guy was looking a bit pissed off so I thought I'd cheer him up a bit you know, being a samaritan and all and we had a good dance-off earlier in the night. I think I did well but fucking hell this guy kept fucking talking, and telling me about the time when some dog was following him in the park and the park attendant was gonna put it down so he took it home and people accused him of stealing the dog. Sob sob etc. hahaha and I just drank my drink fucking quick so I could go but some lightweight loser from ilx must have left an ENTIRE PINT at the bar, so he spotted that and poured half of it in my glass so I'd stay talking with him about his fucking dog. Haha, so I drank that too, I mean the conversation was good (or my part was good) but I kinda wanted to go home. Haha, so yeah I drank all my bits and then he was gonna buy more booze from the barman (and the barman was totally like yeah ok but bottles only) and I muttered something about needing to work and then he poured half of HIS half drunk pint into my glass (what a generous man!) haha fuck I just downed that quarter pint of spitty bear and legged it. And in the fear of being followed I kinda legged it to a random direction and went to angel, and got on the 17 bus, and haha rob bolton was just there finished his shopping at sainsbury's, so I spent all the time telling him the tales of the man whose dog's been stolen, and overshot highbury and islington and ended up the wrong side of highbury fields (not far), but the 4 would take me home, so I ran back to the bus stop for the 4 and to realise that I had JUST MISSED IT. And so I walked through highbury fields and then all the way up holloway road and then home. Thank god I had an ipod I put if you're feeling sinister on the whole way through and the favourite band of my youth kept me through the trecherous journey.

so to amend Sarah's how to have fun to do list!
1) Arrive early (check)
2) Between 5-8 chuck as many cheap cocktails down your throat as you can. Try and get as many spirits as possible in (check)
3) It's 7.59!! QUICK! LINE UP ANOTHER!! (check)
4) CHANGE TO WATER for you are now poorset up a bar tap
5) have a DANCE OFF with scary man in white shoes and totally kick his ass
6) Top one!!
7) NB though at last orders you will be swearing your guts off for a drink (sorry and thank you WB Swiggit) :) talking to scary man looking sad and then end up drinking his spit after listening to an hour of how he stole a dog.

I think i cheered that guy up though, by the end his eyes were a bit teary when i told him that he was a GOOD MAN, and that it doesn't matter whether people thought he was a thief, as long as he knows in his heart that he's a GOOD MAN, and (twas a lie but) dances very well. aw bless.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That's beautiful. You could at least have got to third base.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i could have had a homerun if i wanted to, but would you want to?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha wait, actually i did have a HOME RUN! as in ARRRRGHHHHHH RUNAWAY!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i walked from halfway down Essex Road to Newy green then got a cab wtf? damn call of nature...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell Alangs playlist is THE BEST SET EVER! Respect, Alang!

Did you go Marcello? Did you fight anyone?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no. i wasted yesterday evening trying to rewrite my ile piece on 1962 for blog & re-listening to Consequences, also for blog, and then gave up.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a moral in there somewhere if i can be bothered to look deeply enough. something about the appreciation of music being fundamentally societal in nature as opposed to locking oneself in closeted cloisters to write about it.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*blush*, why that's lovely Dr.C. I enjoyed it immensely too, one for the 70s kids, eh ;-) I didn't enjoy spraying dozens of CDs everywhere (like a fat-handed twat) just as steve was set to come up and replace me.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Why cant i post a question? Does internet hate me? (yes)

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

was that your question?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken's story just made me spew coffee, especialy "talking to scary man looking sad and then end up drinking his spit after listening to an hour of how he stole a dog."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

especially, obv.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

was that THE scary man?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

or the man who discovered MY VITRIOL?!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I hear, he nearly discovered Ken's vitriol.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

or the man who discovered MY VITRIOL?!

haha yeah that was a bit odd - that was Chr1s H0ught0n, a very nice chap I've not seen in a pretty while. Freind of...Marianna's it would appear? Why he showed up at five mintes to closing time, I have no idea.

Anyway.

Top nite, chaps. Bit scared by all the DANCING but that's cos i FEAR the DANCING when not already parabloodylytic. Thus, I half-heartedly wiggled just the one hip to "Like A Prayer" and then skulked at the bar for the rest of the evening. AND I lost my change from my one pint, thus meaning a Guinness cost me a fiver and I was scuppered for another - cheers Stevem for helping out a pathetic moaning git with a medicinal pint.

More nights like that please!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

still can't get over Alang's set. As Sandie morphed into 25-25 I would have wept tears of beery joy I am sure, and Band of Gold would have made me totally shapeless.

But wait, did someone say that Pete played 'Have I The Right'? Golly.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Was the Asian singer bloke from My Vitriol with the really bright eyes at your party the other week, Charlie? There can't be many people who look like him, put it that way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dancing. It Is A Good Thing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus also, it was justified coming out on first day of new job cos they only wanted me for today anyhow. Would have been nice if they'd told me a bit earlier than just before I was going home, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I sort of want to apologise, in that I was still halfway depressed last night and I hope I didn't bring anyone down too badly. I think I was sort of mostly okay when talking, but there were a couple of times between conversations when I was very close to sloping off home absurdly early. Then later on I felt like dancing to some of the tremendous music on offer, but (and it was here I realised I was still suffering from the illness, as I know how irrational this is) I had visions of people sort of shuffling away from me on the dancefloor, and couldn't do it. I mean, I like dancing and there were people I call friends on the floor, and although I am old and all that, I'm not a terrible dancer or anything, so it made no sense at all. It was at this point I decided to get off home. Anyway, I hope I didn't mar anyone else's good time, and I expect I'll be kicked out of all this by being in Barcelona by Saturday lunchtime.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

dancing is an ok thing, but like sex, smoking or listening to music, i prefer to do it in private.

i was never much for school discos either. all these things make one feel as though one is being forced to have fun.

especially in terms of ilx. kate said something a few weeks ago about the horror of walking into a pub (for an fap) and realising that you knew/recognised everyone in there...quite a horrific prospect. one has nothing new to say or offer and therefore i end up retreating hastily. so it is better for me not to go to these events.

at school discos i would usually just sit around morosely. whenever anyone came up and asked me to dance i would always assume that they were taking the piss and tell them to fuck off.

oddly enough, at the time this seemed to work well in attracting even more prospective dancing partners - "oh he's playing hard to get"!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 May 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

kate said something a few weeks ago about the horror of walking into a pub (for an fap) and realising that you knew/recognised everyone in there...quite a horrific prospect. one has nothing new to say or offer and therefore i end up retreating hastily.

You could say new things to old people! Or you could find new people and rattle off old things to them, - which isn't a great night out for anyone.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

couldnt make this in the end. vbusy at moment, next one is end of june?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The theory that no one has anything new to say to each other despite drinking together at least once a week since January is utter nonsense, I'm afraid.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, I misread the above post, apologies)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

you knew/recognised everyone in there...quite a horrific prospect. one has nothing new to say or offer.

haha wtf??

whenever anyone came up and asked me to dance

and now i get visions of stevem asking marcello "you wanna dance?"

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, for what it's worth I really enjoyed our chat and while some of the subject matter was saddening, your tone and approach was anything but. So in my case at least you have no need to apologise - quite the opposite in fact.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Mark - I did hope that I was pretty okay most of the time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)
