FAP Monday April 5th

Cozen is back in London on Monday after ATP, and fancies a meet before he has to get his plane home. I know Colette is off to the States next week too, and fancies a goodbye FAP. And there are special guests staying with Sinkah who we've not met yet. So, Monday: for the convenience of Cozen getting off that evening, somewhere near Baker Street is best - I don't know pubs around there, but I'm sure someone can help.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, Monday is out due to other ILX-birthday-related-plans. There was discussion of this on the other thread and we were talking about Tuesday, not Monday.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

At least, Colette and I were talking about it, but everyone ignores me unless I'm talking about sex, and then they only stick their heads in to complain about it. Sigh.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear that the whole FAP thing might be reaching critical mass here - that's, what, five in the space of seven days?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, I'll come along early doors probably.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

can't do monday, sorry...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I might be FAPped out, which is why I was trying to have little getogethers rather than another FAP, but nothing ever works as planned so maybe nevermind, uh, does anyone have any chocolate?

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, can do monday.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

should be able to go.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"for the convenience of Cozen getting off that evening"

do we really want to witness this? ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

kate is this all because you didn't get to perve me last night - was Ian not enough for ye? lawd...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Or you'r guitar.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

when i found out who the special guests were i was really astounded - shame we may not get the chance to meet :(

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in Liverpool on Monday.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's because HSA disappeared for the entirety of the evening, leaving me wandering back and forth between the pub and home wondering if he'd been hit by a bus or run off with an experimental sound groupie or WHAT and I'm tired and cranky and haven't had enough sleep and I'm sick of boys that only want me to perve on them, boo hoo hoo, what am I, a walking ego support machine? It's about time I spend some time supporting my own ego, dammit!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's any consolation i don't want you to perv on me ;)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Just leave me alone, alright?

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Kate, I sincerely hope that I didn't give the impression of wanting to perve on you...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, let's get back to the topic on hand then

don't think i can make this either but great to meet you last night mr cozen

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I am unsure whether I actually "met" Cozen last night. He was sitting next to me but the feeling of "meeting" him was not, I felt, tangible.

I agree about the FAP critical mass, though as I only ever go to about one FAP per year I'm probably not best placed to comment on the phenomenon.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't I been saying this? Limit the FAPs, they remains special. Don't limit them, and you get people not being bothered to come to half of them, so they ALL get diluted.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, maybe there are too many faps, but people are friends and enjoy them which is a good thing.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's start worrying about loads of people not turning up when the numbers drop. Any suggestions for a pub for this?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

kate - come and rock and roll at the B&G tomorrow. rock and roll therapy!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, if you wait for that then it'll be all over. I know this is lame, but it's true. Keep it special, yo.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Since no one else is nominating a place, I'll propose The Globe, on the basis that it is large and right across the road from Baker Street tube. Never been in it, so I don't know how good it is. You have till the end of the day to propose somewhere else, if you want to, and otherwise this will be it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 4 April 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

until someone suggests another pub:

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub685.htm

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 4 April 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Globe is fine with me. Martin/Mark - do you have any idea what time our guests are likely to turn up as I have to head off at about 7.30-8.00, and would like to meet them. Either that or let me know whether they'll be at Dave's party on Thursday?

Barry - stop being such a bloody old man about this. People not turning up on a Monday night is not symptomatic of the end of anything. It's just a particularly hectic time at the moment what with birthdays, weddings, visitors, Easter weekend etc etc, it'll calm down. Everyone will be present and correct on Thursday, and even half the people turning up is still likely to be more than at the average FAP 12 months ago. My problem is more the effect that this will have on my wallet, liver and performance at work than the London ILE social scene, which is robust enough to cope with this I'm sure.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh the term FAP is casual and vague by definition and going out for a drink with your mates (online or off) is something a lot of people do so it's no big deal - not to negate how many of the gatherings lately have been life-changing events of spectacular wonderment.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair to Bazza, I think he's witnessed something like this before, so he might have a point. But given that I've only turned up to about a quarter of all FAPS since my booze reduction program started, I don't really have an opinion.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be hitting The Globe pretty early I think, before 6, and I think Cozen will be there early too. I have no idea about the other guests staying with Sinkah, whether they will be there or not.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 4 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers Richard. Matt, it's very simple - it's called too much of a good thing. I really like FAPs, I think when we all get together and have a blast together they're great fun and a little bit special. Do it all the time, they'll stop being special. It's hardly rocket science.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 4 April 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand this argument, but they have been very frequent this year and I see no sign of people enjoying them less, and we have had very good turnouts. This one is because David is in town and would like to meet some people for a drink, not just another random feel-like-it FAP (not that I object to them either).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 4 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

but i thought the point of the FAPs is that they aren't always anything special. like, there are occasions for special FAPs (e.g. birthdays and foreign visitors) but like going to the pub with your mates surely is like, normal.. like, what else would you be doing? And it's not like as if it's compulsory or anything just turn up if you're thirsty for a pint, and to be honest that's me most nights. (okay actually you'll end up seeing me all the time and that'd be a little of a turn-off actually.. the ilx girls may beg to differ i'm sure)

so you know. i kind of like the fact that people get "diluted" i think sometimes because otherwise there'll be too many people and that's when "cliques" arise when only close groups of people talk to each other.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 4 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

bump!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 April 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I remain FAPped out, but that's less to do with the number of FAPs and more to do with my own social incompetence; I get overwhelmed when there rae too many people. If I go to every single FAP, I feel completely overwhelmed, but if I start skipping them, I feel left out of the loop, with regards to the sort of off-board chatter and gossip and activity that makes FAPs enjoyable. So it's kind of a Catch-22.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 5 April 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken is OTM. "Specialness" is not the point of FAPs. The original "Fancy A Pint" thread was started because I fancied a pint. I would totally welcome more FAPs where 12 instead of 24 or 40 people showed up because I'd feel I'd be more likely to sit down and have a good chat with more of them.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It reached a point last Thursday, after the Italian mullets left and before the Goths decended from upstairs, when I looked around the bar and realised I knew every single person in the pub. And I got totally overwhelmed and ran away and hid in the corner because I realised there was no way I was even going to get to say hello to everyone, let alone have a conversation with anyone. I don't like it when it reaches that scale. So the thing for me to do, is not go, and that way there will be one less person.

I'm not making a condemnation of FAPping or a complaint or anything like that, I'm just stating that after Thursday's FAP, I will probably drop out for a while.

(Yes, when come back, bring owls, etc.)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The original "Fancy A Pint" thread was started because I fancied a pint.

tom otm. the point is that i think quite a few of us will come to the pub if we're not doing anything else, just cos we like coming to the pub. in fact quite often for me it's go to fap vs go to pub with officemates after work. also tom otm with the 12 person thing - i tend not to talk to the same people fap after fap, anyway.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, your point is fair enough, but I prefer exciting ruinous (and occasional) fun with 20 people than sitting in the pub time after time with the same half-dozen jaded regulars who you like just fine but don't really have anything left to say to. Which is what will happen, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sitting in the pub time after time with the same half-dozen jaded regulars who you like just fine but don't really have anything left to say to

But this happens all the time no matter who you're drinking with, and there's always things to talk about

chris (chris), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, what I'm saying is that *I* prefer sparkling, unpredictable excitement w/ festive atmosphere. Unicuique.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I think the group is fluid enough for both things to happen. People will always turn out en-mass for a visitor or a birthday or another special event. But if a smaller number of people want to go to the pub in between then that's okay too. Don't think of every FAP as an event, think of the message board as a quick version of phoning round your mates because you're bored.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it isn't quite that, I don't think. I don't know about others, but I feel a small tug of pressure every time a FAP is announced, like I'd be missing out if I didn't go.

Maybe I should just accept what will happen will happen and enjoy it while it's still ace.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I have evenings where I just go to the pub with my mates: they are ace (evenings and mates both). My idealised FAP is one where this happens - i.e. a bunch of people round a table chatting - but the guest list is a surprise! This ideal is true more often than not. Parties are great too of course, so are club nights, there's room for all of them.

Anyway in the age of Bierkrieg such qns are moot.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about others, but I feel a small tug of pressure every time a FAP is announced, like I'd be missing out if I didn't go.

i don't know about anyone else, but i get that anyone suggests going to the pub ever.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, yes, absolutely. Though I am getting a bit worried that I might not like pubs that much any more.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If you don't go to FAPs you end up asking questions like "what the fuck is Bierkrieg when its at home?"

What the fuck is Bierkrieg when its at home?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

RickyT - you need more SCRABBLE in pubs. (Prospect of Whitby Scrabble seems to be a goer when we have a sunny day lined up, BTW)

Sarah (starry), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

no matt, the problem with sloping off early from FAPs is you end up asking questions like that...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is Bierkrieg when its at home?

Bierkrieg is never at home Matt. This is the point.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i might try to come along to this, but this week is looking increasingly complicated, with things i'd forgotten taking up my three evenings in london.

but i'm not gone for that long, so it isn't a very big deal...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about others, but I feel a small tug of pressure every time a FAP is announced, like I'd be missing out if I didn't go.

Think how I feel.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

what about the pressure you feel on the plane over?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

some classic barry mentalism on here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What does FAP mean?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Fear All People

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If you look back at Tom's comments above you'll work it out.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I might. I might not. Dunno.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump as final reminder! I still expect to get there before 6, but I've not heard from Cozen yet!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't make it now, sorry :(

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither - please pass on my apologies to young Cozen.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 5 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still coming to this - should be there between 6 and 8 but have to duck out early.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

dada- you can meet us! like, for real!!!

FAP= fancy a pint, so if you turn up today at that pub that I linked up to, you can meet us!!!

for real!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

tell cozen to FAP in Glasgow...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

We couldn't tell him anything because he didn't show! It's like Mitch all over again! Nonetheless, a small but very high quality showing involved me, Tim H, Matt DC, Julio, Lixi, Cis and the Pinefox, and we watched an exciting football match, ending with the right result for Tim and a very excited Leeds woman on the next table. Lots of good chat about football, books and Japan.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry, we'll mess Cozen up bad for his disrespect.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 5 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

this fap was good!

it was nice to meet you all again.

take care.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

my phone was out of battery + I had to leave londres at 6.30 + I was getting off from victoria instead + I was feeling v. tired and out of it. sorry for the no-show!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 April 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No getting cozy with cozen.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 5 April 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ending with the right result for Tim and a very excited Leeds woman on the next table.

wahey!

unfortunately my sore legs proved way too sore for fappage but sounds like you guys had fun! hubba hubba!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 April 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Also later in the night I stood next to DANNY FROM HEARSAY in a Shoreditch toilet. He has these rubbish green contact lenses. I thought he'd disappeared or developed a crack habit but apparently not.

I have to add him to the Minor Celebrities I Have Pissed With spreadsheet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"With"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, was this after I left? Danny from Hear'Say used to come to my parties in Shoreditch. I think he's just a party Whoreditch.

Super-Kate (kate), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Crossed Streams With Shrek!"

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so happy I'm not the only person who noted the resemblance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a '...Buzzcocks' touchstone i'm afraid

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw it mentioned on Liquid News once, which may have pre-dated the Buzzcocks mention. It's a bit of an ongoing joke all over the place - even the mister is aware of it, and he's not exactly a finger-on-the-pulse kind of guy.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

nah

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

We have not lambasted Cozen enough.

The FAP was his idea. His noshow did not impress me, after I had walked a considerable distance in London rain on pained postfootball legs to make it to the boozer, partly in order to give him something.

The company I did find was good: thanks, to them.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)
