This is the thread for the Portland Ned FAP coming this Memorial Day weekend.

There will be (ostensibly) a show created and set up specifically for this purpose c/o Casuistry

There will also be a show happening (already set up) on May 28th. Just so happens Ellen Allien, popular German techno purveyor and label president, will be performing at Holocene that evening. Ned flies in on the 27th. He has expressed interested in seeing this show. So have I.

More details about this tectonic social event will be divulged in this thread, as it is its purpose.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellen Allien live! Lucky sods.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how it's a choice between Portland or a FAP with me. CHOOSE WISELY.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

We could easily change that and make it a Portland ME NED-FAP.
You'd have to make different travel plans though.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ME ME ME ME.

Er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's your thread, Ned, have at it :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Portland!! Yay!
What part of town is Holocene in? I will be staying by Pioneer Courthouse Sq most likely... I'm also curious if the little gelato shop by the Whole Foods is still open, it was really good last summer.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 3 April 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

wherever it is, it is apparently just blocks away from Casuistry's house.. i.e. probably not out in the boonies.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on the other side of the river, and then up about 10 blocks. Holocene is the totaly hipster joint. (Although I've heard rumors that lately it's mostly a guppie cruise joint. Weird.)

I am impressed that the Portland FAP thread was started TWO MONTHS in advance. Zounds! Gives me enough time to tidy up the place...

Also, my mom will be in town that weekend. So I will actually not be participating as much as I might otherwise (also none of you can stay with me).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 3 April 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Guppies can walk on water in Portland?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

er, land?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it by Hawthorne? Lloyd Center? Those are the only two "across the river" places I have been. I'm not even sure if i have the right name for Lloyd Center- that might just be name of the mall near it. ;-)

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's SE 10th and Morrison -- which is one block north of Belmont, which is the main east-west street north of Hawthorne, but it's like a mile closer to the river than the Hawthorne shopping district. (And Lloyd Center is the right name.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

www.holocene.org

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

This is all too confusing. Is there a place where a bunch of us can wreak havoc in a drunken fashion and then call up other ILXors worldwide while under the influence?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Holocene does have the best drink in town. It comes in a martini glass and involves a lot of espresso. It tastes like candy, you can chug down 4 of them without noticing it and suddenly you're totally buzzed and drunk and it's great. It's called the "Scorched Earth". It's also, like, $7, but I think you pay that much for a Pabst in NYC, so it's not such a bad deal.

You can wreak havoc at Holocene but it's doomed to be artsy havoc. Oh, here's context for you: It's where Momus played when he was in town.

There are a skajillion bars within a few blocks of it as well, including the smoky and beloved Basement Pub.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's Oregon law that every establishment that serves food must serve a luxurious cheese plate. It's true.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This all sounds like Useful and Relevant Information. :-) I will taste this mysterious drink.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

DB OTM. Perhaps I can recommend a great ($6 appetizer/$9 entree) restaurant that's within nice walking distance to Holocene (you must get an appetizer) (including the cheese plate, it is to die for, as are the hazelnuts)?

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Num. That sounds worthy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmm, cheese and hazelnuts. :-)
If you're hungry downtown, there's also a REALLY good pizza place up the street from Peet's- I think it's right across the street from the Westin.

I had been thinking of driving down, but after getting stuck in traffic today (75F +), I'm remembering how lousy my un-airconditioned car is on highways on hot days- I might be taking amtrak.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 4 April 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been to The Farm before (in the NE?), and they had an excellent Oregon Cheese ball, with crushed hazelnut coating. it was K-CHEESNIFIQUE!

Lyra, I'm planning on doing Amtrak myself... If you're driving alone, it's cheaper to take Amtrak and drive.

Even though most Portlanders hate the place, I still like the x-tra crusty doughy pizza they have at Rocco's (across from Powell's books). And the indifferent punk rock girls that serve it to you.. mmmmmmmmm.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 4 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

to take Amtrak than drive, I meant to say. Though hijacking a train sounds like fun too.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 4 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's Oregon law that every establishment that serves food must serve a luxurious cheese plate. It's true.

Now I'm nostalgic for the way it used to be . . . guh.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 4 April 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Tillamook farms are the secret puppet masters of Portland. (even though it doesn't change the fact that the one time I stayed in Tillamook on a trip back home, I had the most flat-tasting mediocre pizza ever)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 4 April 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Farm is indeed the place I am referring to (although the hazelnuts and cheese platter separate from the ball form is even better).

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(Er, what that tangled sentence meant was, the bowl of hazelnuts and the platter of cheeses are both superior to the indeed k-faboo cheese ball with hazelnuts.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Lyra, tell me you are not talking about Pizzicato Pizza. There is no good pizza downtown, especially not that stuff.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember the name of it! But I've eaten there like 3 times, and I liked it each time. Um, bear in mind I grew up in NJ, though.... land of super-greasy pizza.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 4 April 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Were there several video game coin ops or pinball machines inside? Did the pizza feel like cement afterwards?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 4 April 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up in NYC, so. Portland is only good for fancy West Coast pizza.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 4 April 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the pizza at the bowling alley near Belmont is pretty damn good.. especially with Sierra Nevada.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 4 April 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you know, it's good for bowling alley pizza. My favorite local pizza is Vincente's, but that's mostly because it's near me (and good) -- I understand there are some even better places in deeper Northeast.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 4 April 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
If I may, I remember the Long Island Pizzeria (on SW Morrison) being an acceptable imitation of NYC pizza. The quality may have declined since I was last there, but it was comforting to see that it was still open.

Also last week we got slices from some yuppie pizza joint on Alberta and they were fine by hungry-Oregon-slacker standards (which are just LOWER but whatever, I mean the crust was clearly all wrong but at least the cheese and pepperoni weren't rancid).

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe there just needs to be a massive pizza study when I'm there. Sadly, that might cause me to die.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in the minority here, but I love the mega-cement-crust-o-death at Rocco's Pizza right across from Powell's books. And the cute indifferent punk rock girls serving it to you. mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Rocco's is OK, but only if you don't value your stomach.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

omg the grease

but it's a good place to sit and rifle through whatever you've just bought at powell's or everyday music or what have you.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

go to Half And Half a couple stores down. good sandwiches and coffee.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Half & Half is completely brilliant.

Ain't no reason to talk about pizza in Portland. The best you can do is some of the West Coast stuff -- Vincente's in a personal favorite but in part that's because of their fantastic spinach salad.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, news flash:

Not only is tekno babushka Ellen Allien playing the Holocene the night of Friday, May 28th...

...but going on the same night at Berbati's Pan is Destroyer, Frog Eyes, and Mount Egypt.

So, all you BC indy ruck luvverz have no excuse.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay music and mirth!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

second the Vincente's -- great salads and alright pizza. luna pizza is decent too (on Broadway).

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but Destroyer is only so-so live. Though maybe the new stuff is different.

It doesn't matter, I'm pretty much only going to be available Saturday, most likely.

And Vincente's pizza is best if you order the garlic and onion.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

REVIVINATE!

The hour of Ned approaches. I'm curious which ILXors are going to be in town.

Sadly I'm mostly not going to be able to hang out with you all because my mother will be in town. Also sadly is that a show per se wasn't feasible. But there might be some sort of fun at my house on Saturday if people are interested, and if Ned would like to perform, there will be plenty to watch him. And you'll probably get to meet my mom! She's cool but don't freak her out, if you do meet her.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to work out a downtown hotel deal with interested travellers from Seattle or elsewhere... I plan to get a room with three beds (including wheeled-in beds to save on cost). I'll certainly arrive on May 28th, and will certainly stay until May 30th.

Too many of my friends who live in Portland have cats... long haired fatal-allergy-to-me cats. :(

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a town where the streets are lined with cats. Not paved with cats, lined with cats.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If they were paved with cats, they would squeak as you rolled over or trod on them. DB, still in for the hotel obv. -- will talk more about it with you tomorrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you were staying with some alleged "cousin" or something.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I is, cousin Mark and family -- but only for the first two nights I'm there or something of the sort, since he'll be out of town otherwise that weekend. I'll be seeing him today and will get more info.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, I just got your message.
I get on the train at 10am and will probably arrive in PDX around 2-3pm... I'll get into my motel room 15 minutes or so after I arrive.

Lyra, email me your cell phone number at d o n u t b i z i t c h @ h o t m a i l or my real email address if you know it already...

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 May 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in totally sick deadline hell this weekend (and will be going up to the Gorge on Saturday to see the New Pornographers play), but will almost certainly be at Destroyer/Frog Eyes Friday night, & would love to meet up with y'all. My cell is six four six, three two five, five ohhh four four.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 28 May 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

xxxxpost yep, I'll be getting into town Sat. AM, so there you go :)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 28 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh, I already made other plans with friends Friday night.. so I can't make the Destroyer show (since most of the accion, as far as FAPping goes, isn't happening til Saturday anyway), but anyone else who wants to go, I highly recommend getting a chance to say hi to Douglas and Jack Cole. :)

(Douglas, Jack, I'll surely see you at the TFUL show in two weeks anyway)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, poo, I will miss Douglas as well. :-( Most unfortunate! I will send good thoughts and someday here we shall meet. :-) Although -- *thinks* -- well, Douglas, are you up for maybe a late afternoon meetup or quick drink or something before the show, or will that not happen? The evening schedule on my end isn't fully set in stone yet, so while the show is out, other options might not be. I'll call your cell and check!

DB, thanks for the travel schedule! I'm probably meeting with Jake for something lunchish and may spend the rest of the early afternoon in downtown or something, still plotting on my end. Call my cousin's home number when you're in -- Maria and Mark both will be at the house -- while I can try calling you mid-afternoon from wherever I'm at.

I think that's about it for now...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I might be free this afternoon as well, as far as downtown romping. In fact, I need to do some errands in downtown this afternoon anyway... so Ned call me sometime after 10ish.

Douglas, Maura is in Seattle this weekend and until Tuesday. If you have spare time (which sounds like is REALLY spare), you might have time to say hi to her on your way up to the Gorge (unless you're taking 84 east and then north, which would take you away from Seattle, but would make sense, as far as getting to the Gorge the fastest)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know Maura was out here! How cool, but what a pity to miss meeting her. :-( Another time! DB, will call you in a little bit as requested, will try and get both Jake and Douglas first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

so that's where Ned is!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The answers are revealed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, spoke to Douglas Wolk and he's a fine feller! Alas, indeed he'll be busy most of the day but he has Donut B.'s cell number and will call later if time is available.

Will be meeting up with the man and mystery Jake A. for coffee at Stump Town at 34th and Belmont at 11 am, so should anyone care to join us, feel free! Will probably end up back at my cousin's mid-afternoon around when Donut B. arrives.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned and I are being GRAND at the INTERNET CAFE in DOWNTOWN PORTLAND called BACKSPACE. We're here being SOCIAL instead of being HERMITS as home, and also we don't want "THEM" accesssing our DATABASES through their secret CABLE LINES! (not unless we want them to, of course)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing better than travelling to a different city to use the internet.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

jack, it's not better, it's GRANDER

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Damnit, why haven't you gone to Montage yet?

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

last time i went to montage, the waiter made tinfoil fighters for both me and my significant other.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 29 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Montage is a place you go to after clubbing. It's really a 2am place. But there are about 100 restaurants in Portland I'd rather go to than Montage (although that's probably mostly a vegetarian thing). The tinfoil statues are cool -- if you do go, don't eat all your food, have enough so there's some to go.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 29 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

all right, see you guys tomorrow

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Saturday, 29 May 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Woot!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 29 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

We're here being SOCIAL instead of being HERMITS as home, and also we don't want "THEM" accesssing our DATABASES through their secret CABLE LINES! (not unless we want them to, of course)

Hermit, the Man could be tracking you anyway, as you type;> (Course, keep in mind that being social means talking to other people.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

also we don't want "THEM" accesssing our DATABASES through their secret CABLE LINES!

hahahahahaha!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Tomorrow's biting question will be: How CP's dinner party went?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(To deflect any potential arrows on my "hermit" comment, twas said with a twinkle in me eye and much love.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Frog Eyes/Destroyer show was excellent. Frog Eyes was the best backing band for Bejar I've seen. Very nice.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a brunch potluck. But yes.

Folks: The deal tonight is at Billy Ray's (not Billy Reed's) on 2216 NE MLK. Show starts at 9, S. Brooxx is on at 9:30.

E-mail me if you need directions for the Sunday brunch.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 29 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for rock!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, would calling you around 11am on Sunday be bad?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it would not. Especially since the brunch starts at noonish.

It's a potluck if you can wing it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 30 May 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

An excellent brunch, fun performances, and I have met the Goat-Boy. A dream day!

Ned at Casuistry's place (donut), Sunday, 30 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Pictures, and perhaps video of Ned's reading to come.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 30 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope none of the ILXors caught on film mind that I post these pictures -- I went for the flattering ones (and I'll remove them from my site if you don't like 'em):

http://www.theminorthirds.com/brunch/brunch-donna-ned-jack.jpg

We played Bette Davis Eyes. DB got everyone to clap along.

What could it mean? What could it mean?

Thank you to those who came down -- it was a very nice weekend, and brunch was excellent fun. It was great to meet Donna, who I hope managed to get back to her hotel room in one piece.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 May 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I did, thanks for asking :)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

She did. I'm a witness to her posting that right now, in fact.
(Off to beat my previous Q*bert record which I have set TWO TIMES in a row at Backspace, thank you)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 31 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned reads. It's an MPEG-4, and about 3.6Mb. It will probably only be available for a few days.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You scary scary man. (Well done, obv.)

Wonderful marvellous time -- food, friends, family and more. And yes indeed, Qbert. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

*checks file* Hm, no sound coming out, tried two separate programs. Curious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, it runs in Quicktime for me. But you might need it to be "pro".

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the thing, I was running it in Quicktime! But hang on...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

...nope, changed the file extension to mp3 to be on the safe side even.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's not an mp3, you see.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is your sound on?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Windows media player can't handle it. I am deprived of Ned!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My sound is on, you Casuistry you. Meantime, NickN demonstrates I AM NOT ALONE. And I did play it as an mpeg first, so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, jeez. All right, I'll recode it. Pah. Wait a while...

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, here it is as a .mov file. Actually it won't work properly for another ten minutes. So come back at 10:45am Pacific time.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, the pics are killer, but My Friend Chicken? Wouldn't be true class w/o SuperFudge.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Just giggled my way through it. Merci, CP! Lads, I ride to your rescue:

1) WMA won't play it; must be QuickTime---which you can grab for free from the Apple site. (Go for the stand-alone QuickTime Player installer though. For whatever reason, the Player/ITunes version just can't handle it.

2) Ned: Find/click on and slide your volume control all the way up on your toolbar. Even when I slid it all the way up, though, I could barely hear it through my headphones.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

*bows* I should note I *did* have it all the way up. Do please allow for the fact I might have tried that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Wierd, as that's what I just did. Ah well, you know what you sound like....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, we were singing a song about reading a book about chickens. So. SuperFudge just would not do.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My pics will have to wait until after this weekend... (as will the pics for the previous weekend). Too busy today, and I have to confer with too many Portland FAP people regarding the photos to be posted they will not mind be posted to this thread.. as many photos of characters were taken, and many could be seen as unflattering.
