The Pulitzer Prize winners were announced yesterday.

http://www.pulitzer.org/2004/2004.html

I know there are a fair amount of journo-types like myself around here, so I'm curious if anybody has thoughts about them one way or another. Given the black eyes American newspapering has gotten in the past year or so, do they mean as much to you? Did they ever mean anything?

I'm always curious about the criticism prize, which this year went to Dan Neil, the L.A. Times' automobile critic. Apparently he's funny as hell, but....automobile critic? Seems like it's either classical music or architecture scribes who pick these up. Are film/pop music critics not as good, or is there some general allergy to their supposed lowbrow status?

Also, the prize in music composition went to a creature called "Tempest Fantasy" by Paul Moravec. (Steve Reich was nominated.) Anybody know it?

What kind of journo are you? Aren't you in SF?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

AUTOMOBILE CRITIC?!

A part-time-ish journo. In Chicago, formerly from SF.

A list of all the winners of the Pulitzer for criticism.

OK, of the ones I know, Huxtable and Goldberger are unavoidable, so is Ebert I guess (no Kael, apparently...WTF?), Tim Page I've liked, Shales is um OK, I've never understood what the hell is so special about Kakutani and I suspect everybody in the whole wide world considers her reputation completely inexplicable, and Margo Jefferson YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

So what pop critic deserves a Pulitzer?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"and the winner is...me. for putting up with you freaks."

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

if an automobile critic is really great why shouldn't they win Strongo? (nb I do not know this person's writing)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i am just amazed there is such a thing, really.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i know i shouldn't be, what with the "age of the internet" and all.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

no, that clears it up. it read more incredulous in the other sense is all.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean it makes sense that there is such a thing, the same way i'd assume there are gun critics or woodworking critics.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i really want to read some gun criticism now

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'd be happy if any of the old guard -- Marsh, Christgau, Marcus -- won something. But Marsh doesn't seem to have a regular gig anymore (which might be a good thing), and apart from the too-gnomic-for-a-Pulitzer "Real Life Rock Top Ten," neither does Marcus.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"This pearl-handled .45 is irrelevant in the wake of crunk, grime, and the new Prince album."

"The lacquer-finished paneling of this refinished house could use a little more of a dancehall influence."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Could somebody with some actual fucking rhytmic sense please remix the new Winchester? It keeps going off at random intervals. Woody Woodpecker beats, blurting kickback . . . just fuck off."
