Right, predict away.

Ally, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I predict lots of gloating from your direction.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

er, who's in it this year? I was enthralled by the subway series (is that the right terminology) last year.

Jonnie, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe if I root for the Yankees, they'll finally lose. Yankees in 4.

Kris, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'll be the cue for a lot of weepy patriotism and talk about how 'the city is coming back from its worst moment to one of its best!' and all. Which may in fact be true, but can't we have some crabby drunken celebrating instead?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Word.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I want to say Diamondbacks, especially if they can finagle 5 starts out of Schilling (Games 1, 4, & 7) & Johnson (Games 2 & 5/6). The other DBack starters will be key, obviously. With Mussina doing as well as he has, and Pettite doing his usual stuff, though, it'll be tough. AND if Clemens & El Duque get off the schnide (Clemens w/ his hamstring issue, El Duque pitching like an old man), then it's the Yanks all the way. Yankees have the better overall batting order, too, though the D-Backs have a better bench, and pitchers that can handle the bat (which, with 4 games scheduled in NL parks, is key). AND, in the AL parks, the D-Backs can just slide Durazo into the DH role, while the Yanks' options (Justice, Justice, and Justice) have been quite lackluster this year.

If the Diamondbacks win tomorrow, they'll have the series in 6. Else, it's Yankees in 5.

David Raposa, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep,I agree. Maybe.

What about Spurs v Middlesborough tomorrow? I reckon Gus 'll get another belter tomorrow and Rebrov should come off the bench to bag a brace. Boro will be shown up for the frauds that they are after the false dawn of their wear-tees derby.

Jonnie, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GIANTS!

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Roger Clemens should be kicked in the face.

To answer the way up question, it's NY Yankees vs. Arizona Diamondbacks.

Yankees in 5. Arizona = ass. That's just how it is. I used to live there, they suck. I hate them. In fact, I wish they would sink into the earth, never to be seen again. Especially Randy Johnson, aka The World's Ugliest Man. Arrrrrrgh.

Ally, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

UP THE BLUES!

DavidM, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's with calling it the World Series? Sounds like an American Series to me. I thought you were talking about Cricket or Rugby in which case all that needs to be said is Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!

toraneko, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

America + Canada = world, silly.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does that mean the rest of us get to be the Underworld?

toraneko, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the Yankees as much as anyone else from the NYC metro area (Mets fans don't count), but it's getting a little anticlimatic to watch them win year after year. I was kind of rooting for either the Dodgers (Dad is a fan from back when they were still in Brooklyn) or the Phillies to get to the Series, but alas!

I would think Lou Piniella's gotta be worried about his job right now ... shit, I know I would be, if my team won 116 games but couldn't get to the World Series. The guy's the Marty Schottenheimer of baseball.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mets fans are better than Yankees fans.

Ally, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is the exact definition Yanks fans=Manhattan/Bronx, Mets fans=Kings, Queens, Long Island? Help me out here. I leave Staten Island out of it under the assumption that nobody gives a damn about them except the Wu-Tang Clan.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

poor Ally and her misconceptions...poor girl

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And in the meantime, Arizona 9-1 in the first game...the hell?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unfortunately I fell asleep after the first innings and missed the fireworks in the later innings. I did see that amazing home run from Counsel though, that boy winds himself up sooooo much, he looks really weird, but it seems to work doesn't it?

So, are the diamondbacks going to win it now?

chris, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It hurts to root for a team with such ugly uniforms. GOD they are just HIDEOUS. They look like refuelers for some Santa Fe trucking business. Purple and aqua????

Ned you've basically got the breakdown on team loyalty. 2 complicating axes: National League/American League (wich has its own complications: no DH/DH, integration/not, speed/power) - so oldtime New York supporters of the Dodgers and the Giants are generally now Mets fans. Some would say that the other axis is class. Yankee fans in general have more cellphones per capita and are MUCH easier on their players (cuz they don't 'care' as much (is this where i say 'chiz chiz'?))

Tracer Hand, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

twenty-three years pass...

Dodgers in 18 innings!
