Fashion Advice: Girls In Ties

Can I just admit to being a female tie-lover? Is this weird?

I love wearing neckties and I have done so since I first went to school. When I persisted into adulthood, I had to endure all kinds of mocking from people like my brother, who claimed that "women in ties are lesbians". Perhaps I secretly *like* the power aspect of ties, as I work in a male-dominated field.

I have a collection of pretty and interesting ties (some of which are even vintage Liberty print ties inherited from father). They're an easy and effective way to make almost any collared shirt look work-worthy. (I draw the line at ties with uncollared shirts - this is where Avril went wrong.) Not to mention a way of showing "individuality" when faced with a dull work dress code.

Fashionistas and fetishists, tell me what you think!

Today I am wearing a purple Izod-style shirt with a green-blue shimmer-silk tie decorated with a subtle psychedelic pattern. It changes colour depending on the light. It has already provided me with... erm... minutes of entertainment!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Rocks. Very cool.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I like ties.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite look was my "Weimar Lesbian" outfit, involving a black, form-fitting military style shirt and a black and white striped tie, combined with blonde braids. Very kinky, I was told.

(Unfortunately it was my old School Tie and it is close to dying due to misuse, so this outfit has had to be retired.)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

1997 revival in full effect!

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm, 1975 revival in my case.

What happened to make girls wear ties in 1997? I can hardly remember it.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

she's wearing a tie. and she is baaaaaaaad, i tell ya!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have misremembered the 1997 thing. It could have just been hanging around with the kids from Sinister.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

1) That image is reversed. She's not left-handed and the Rickenbacker logo is back to front

2) RESIZE THAT MOTHERF*CKER!!!

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

avril

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was not suggesting it was old hat to wear them, btw!)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess what I'm saying is I like girls in ties, unless they are Nazis, in which case it's still kind of OK.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

she's only canadian.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that would be silly. That would be like suggesting that wearing, say, hats, would be old hat.

It also depends on how, erm, the bosom area is handled. I'm not sure that really skinny or flat-chested girls look good with ties, as it makes them look like little boys. However, if you are, endowed, shall we say, one must take care to wear a bra which lifts and separates, so that the tie lies like a river between two mountains. That is visual perfection. You don't want, like, barrel effect, as seen on prison matrons and the like.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems too try-hard and contrived to me. It's very unusual that it works. IMHO obv.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I like girls to try hard.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Barry, obviously lots of things that work perfectly fine for a lot of folks seem complicated to you.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll teach you how to tie, a tie, barry. it's pretty easy.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You asked, I told. Stop being nasty.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'd wanted to be nasty, I'd have said something like "Well, hey, I'd look perfectly ridiculous with a shaved head, but it's your look, you work it!" but I'm trying not to be bitchy today, you see?

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

he was just giving his opinion, super-kate.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, he was just giving his opinion, super-kate.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So was I.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

he didn't mention you, in his post.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i think ties are very good

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing though - "the power aspect of ties" doesn't really chime with me, but then I've never really met a woman at work who wears one. In non-work wear, they don't really spell 'power' to me at all.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not Mark's fault that he's bald, so think I it's particularly nasty and hurtful to imply that Mark's shaved head looks ridiculous. Particularly coming from a loser wannabe musician with a pubescent fixation on boy bands.

Mark fan, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

n is correct, a tie worn in a nice way doesnt, or at least shouldnt convey power, that is the wrong message

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if it's so much a "power" thing, as a "look I'm one of the boys thing".

I suppose in a weird way it might heighten the gender differences, because a girl in a tie has some kind of sexual overtones. But the gender differences are already highlighted due to me being the only girl in a room full of computer programmers. It's kind of like a deliberate over-statement of the obvious, I guess.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

'Mark fan' is a big wuss. We're all Mark fans here, anyway. It's just that naughty Barry.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to look vulnerable, when I wear a tie. like someone could easily use it to strangle me or something.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It might be the wrong message for the lady, but it is entirely the right message for the tie.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And wasn't me, either. I tend to criticise Kate directly :)

(I'm finding my head far too shiny these days. I'm sure that means it's in fine fettle, like a thoroughbred racehorse, but it does rather draw attention to my pate)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're great but it seems only certain women can do it. It's tough to build a whole new category into your wardrobe though; one more thing to co-ordinate!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think co-ordination is as important, as is made out.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark you should totally powder your pate.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just about the only thing I coordinate, as I can't be bothered with that shoes/handbag stuff. Life's too short. As I'm ever so slightly colour blind, I take great pride in odd colour combos. I only ever wear my green shiny tie with purple or orange shirts.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

so that the tie lies like a river between two mountains

Poetry.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if the boyishness of tie-wearing has to do with its phallic shape?

One more (sorry, can't help it).

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's cool. takes guts and confidence to pull off if you're a girl. kind of like wearing suspenders. i think a hot chick in wide-leg pinstripe pants, black suspenders, loose black tie and white ribbed tank top is hottttt.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Tank top and tie? I'm really not sure on the wearing ties with uncollared shirts thing. It seems a bit belt-and-braces.

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The only time I've worn one was when I worked as a busgirl. Uniform for us and the waiters was white collared shirt, black pants or long skirt, and tie. I had a nice red satin one I found at the salvation army, and I thought I looked kind of sharp. But it did give a clear sense of wearing a uniform, and I have trouble imagining how I'd look alright wearing one these days.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The only outfit I wear a tie with is a normal white button down shirt and my 4 button black velvet fitted vintage blazer, with black slacks or my grey pleated d&g skirt. I feel very schoolgirl teddyboyish in it when I have my hair long fringed.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Predictably enough, I am very much in favour of this.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i love this look. as long as its more schoolish and less anime

kephm, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the superhuman sized eyes are kind of offputting.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

my childish attraction to avril lavigne will be the death of me yet

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Describe the circumstances of this death.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

rabies in the face

kephm, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Suffocation by ILX condescension and disapproval... ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah how would i ever survive that

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

rabies ain't fun kid
