Taking Sides: Irritating twits wearing Von Dutch gear vs. Irritating twits wearing Shepard Fairey "Obey GIANT" gear

I must confess to owning an OBEY GIANT t-shirt and being moderately entertainined by the sticker/poster phenomenon, so I suppose I side with the latter.

Von Dutch gear, though, I jus' don't get, and I pretty much want to slay ever individual I see wearing an ironic Von Dutch trucker cap. Is that so wrong?

Living where I live, I'm sure this will bug the eff outta me in like 2-3 years.

Huck in Sask. (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Von Dutch is worn by rich frat assholes who like the Strokes. Obey Giant crap was worn by proto backpack hiphoppers in the mid 90s

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, what is your obsession with Von Dutch, exactly?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't von dutch have something to do with hotrods?

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you have to factor in that I live right in the veritable pancreas of NYU. Thus, I'm surrounded by collegiate fashion-tragedy and must face it on a daily basis. Von Dutch gear is absolutely UBIQUOTOUS, and I can't for the life of my fathom why that is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Paris Hilton rocks the Von Dutch safety-orange hat in at least one "Simple Life" installment, which could account for its sudden popularity among impressionable youth

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

its sudden popularity among impressionable youth

Don't you mean stupid youth?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget ashton "rat boy" kutcher

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I live right in the veritable pancreas of NYU.

Hmmm...I used to live near you, probably. Christopher St between 6th and 7th to be exact. Though I'm guessing you are east of there.

I feel your pain re:the collegiateness, but what a great place to live. I miss it. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

LA is worse than NYC when it comes to Von Dutch hats, I guarantee it.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to be all diplomatic and shit

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

'andre the giant has a posse' was classic. the Obey has gotten a bit out of hand.

Jon, you're too young to remember Vanilla Ice. Stop that.

More flash animations! Less Von Dutch!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's okay because Von Dutch hats will soon be collecting dust in boxes alongside Vuarnet t-shirts, tightly rolled jeans, and silk shirts.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Vuarnet shirts were hot, but I might only think that because the last time I saw one, it was worn by the very hot senior girl who spent two hours in the principal's office calling resort hotels to try to get a summer job, while I, a freshman, was confined to the same office for being suspended. You would think wacky hijinks and bonding would ensue, but no.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring back Hypercolor, dammit

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God, how did I ever forget Hypercolor? Those were hot too.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a cap reading "Von Biatch" in the window at the Steve Madden store in DC. If it had read "Von Butch" I would have been happy, but the juxtaposition was almost as lame as the Von Dutch gear.

In a better world, Von Dutch would arise zombie-like from the grave and kill everyone wearing something with his name on it.

People who have Obey/Andre The Giant stuff in 2004 are total tools.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a Shephard Fairey windbreaker but it's from his first clothing line ever when it debuted at a gallery in Philly in 1994. It's handmade and worth lots of $$$.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Alright, so maybe I didn't look like the veritable quintessence of cool today -- in a yellow Devo t-shirt and some ill-fitting jeans with my daughter in a red'n'black Baby Bjorn as sported the very yuppie scum I used to lament, but I saw a desperate, chinless dork wearing a Von Dutch trucker cap AND a Von Dutch t-shirt. I mean, JESUS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they're down town, too. i see TONS of 'em when i take smoke breaks.

why did i return to work in NYC?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 7 May 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The young black guy in a Von Dutch shirt this morning: ironic and fabulous subversion or fashion victimization?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago)

The Vanilla Ice bit makes me think "Back and to the left. Back and to the left."

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

"Everything cool gets packaged and sold to somebody," Cassel said. "If I make some money out of it, and his daughters make some money out of it, I think that’s the American way. If somebody does that to me after I die, I’d be honored."
Honored? Well, if he were, those closest to him say he’d have a interesting way of showing it.
"If he was alive," Williams said, "he’d walk in there with a pistol and shoot those people."

Very OTM.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:28 (twenty years ago)
