I've got a job interview this afternoon, and I'm SOOO scared!

I mean, I reckon I'm good enough for the job, and I know the interviewer (I've worked with her before) so it should be okay, but I havn't had an interview for ages, and I just KNOW I'm gonna screw up somehow. I'll turn into a jibbering wreck, I know it.

This is the thread where you clever bunch give me helpful advice and words of re-assurance.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Just imagine that you're naked throughout the interview...wait..that's not right..

winterland, Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually tell people to drink lots of caffeine before the interview, so that they seem energetic and confident, but in this case, I think that will only make you more nervous. Erm... good luck, tho!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck. My boy had an interview yesterday morning. he said he was calm & very honest with them. Then at 7 o/c last night, he got a phone call to say that he'd got the job. So try to calm yourself down be methodical & ask for some time to think about answering questions before you actually answer them.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray for James! Congrats!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ta!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeh, say well done from me!

I think a can of red bull an hour before I go in may be the key - despite my nervous tension I've feeling rather lethargic today for some reason.

Cheers for the advice and the kind words. Methodical - energetic & confident - think before I speak - all good pointers. Cheers!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also remember it's OK to big yourself up in interviews. Learning Access and implementing VB all by yourself is quite an achievement, so stress that you are a self-starter, all that kind of crap...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

just try to make some kind of join. eye contact. see the panel as people. YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE JOB NO WORRIES.

also: yay james!

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

thanx gaz! Sorry to hijack your thread Johnney! bes sure to let us know how you get on!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Its at 2.00 this afternoon, so yeh, I'll be able to report back before I go home.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Best of luck..

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"A little dab of speed is just the ticket!"

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

A good strategy is to imagine it sort of like shopping. You want to see how it all FEELS on you, the office, yr future boss, etc. Returning unwanted jobs is often k-difficult.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I've just come out. It was RUBBISH!

I painted the WORSE picture of me EVAH! I mean, based on that show, I wouldn't hire me. I rambled, I pointed out my mistakes instead of my successes, and generally didn't sell myself enough.

Ah well, never mind. The pain of the failure will pass.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh. I'm sorry. I hate when you come out of an interview with that sinking feeling; it's humiliating. But then again, you never know. I have had some awful interviews and still been offered the job anyway!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I GOT THE JOB!

COME ON!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

CONGRATS(plz send me money)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

well done Johnney B!!!

I had the same experience recently - went for interview, came out of it thinking I'd done really badly, yet got the job! In fact I start my new job next Monday. How about you?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Woo! Congrats!

Score: Sinking Feeling: 0, Confidence: 1

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Start my new job next Wednesday! Yay you Mark!

I've got a grin the size of Wales. They'll be dancing on the streets of Didcot tonight!

Cheers for your super-encouragement Kate - I owe you alcohol!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yay, well done you!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for job success! Booze for us plz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I once got a job based on a lead I found and followed by myself, to the chagrin of the employment agency I was using. The agency had been coaching me to wear navy suits with cream-colored blouses, and had reprimanded me several times when I showed up at the agency wearing outfits that didn't conform to their standard-issue "interview attire." When I went on this independent interview, I was sick of looking for a job, sick of being rejected everywhere I went, and I was getting to the point where I didn't give a shit one way or the other. So I showed up wearing a black cotton shirt and a dingy black flare skirt I'd had for ten years. And I got the job.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's important that you wear clothes to a job interview that you FEEL COMFORTABLE IN as well as clothes that look "formal". If you're intensely uncomfortable, you're not going to give good interview, no matter how presentable you look.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a job interview on Wednesday that's a pretty big deal for me. I'm deciding about dress...I know the company has a completely casual dress policy, so I'll automatically be overdressed compared to whoever's interviewing me. I can't decide between wearing my suit (which is double-breasted and a bit too "80's executive"), the standard shirt and tie, or looking a bit more casual and interesting since they seem to dig that.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i personally would wear a suit Jordan. Good luck though anyway!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

SHIRT AND TIE

Under no circumstances should you wear a double-breasted suit unless you think giving off "Once I finish beating the help, I'm off to my mistress's cabin in the Hamptons" vibes will help you fit into the company culture.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd wear a shirt and tie, because it's good to be slightly more formal for a job interview than you would be otherwise, but wear a funky tie to show your "I am different and quirky" appeal. ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Once I finish beating the help, I'm off to my mistress's cabin in the Hamptons"

This being Dan, combined with reading this too quickly, I thought this read: "Once I finish beating off the help..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Once at another job I thought I'd break the monotony by wearing rock shirts underneath my suit jackets. Hooboy, my boss had a nice talk with me over that one.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, that's sort of what I was thinking Dan, thanks (it's the suit I got for my Bar Mitzvah at 13, a few sizes too large of course, and in 1994 I clearly thought it was pretty cool...I don't know why my parents allowed me to make such decisions).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah maybe your suit choice is not the best way to go!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Aye, Dan OTM. Half of the interview is seeing whether you "fit in" with the ethos of the company (so I've heard) so the smart shirt and tie option looks the goer.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

first day of work, and a blue oxford shirt and grey suit pants seems overdressed. Already I like this place.

hstencil, Monday, 19 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone else put their band down on a resume?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

HRrrmmmmm. Well, yes. I had to, I mean, how else was I going to explain the 2 year gap in my resume? I didn't put the band name, I just said something vague about working in the music industry. But still.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you should have headed the section:

"living the dream"

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I do, because it's a job with a W-2 and everything, and any name recognition might catch their eye or whatever. I feel kind of uncomfortable talking about it in interviews though, like, "Shouldn't we be talking about, um, important stuff?"

(x-post, ha)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw, in the phone interview I was all set with my biggest strength & weakness, etc., and then they go and ask for my THREE main strengths and weakness, WTF. I really hope it was a question to test one's extemporaneous bullshitting ability.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I interviewed someone last week, he constantly tried to read my notes, said my (better than industry standard) key performance indicators were rubbish, and then to top it all, when I asked him what footie team he supported he said "oh no I really hate football"

no guesses whether he got it

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If everything else had not happened, but he still had answered the footie question in the same way, what would your reaction have been? Cause there's a discrimination case waiting to happen there!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

he wouldn't get it whatever way, completely the wrong fit for the office, this office is not a hot bed of footie talk actually, for shame

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I hope I never get asked about sports in an interview, because I don't even have a basis to lie about that sort of thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

JBR: was it one of those horrible New York employment agencies where the recruiters say 'axe' when they mean 'ask'? I did the rounds of these in '91 and got sick of 20-a-day smokers with lipstick on their teeth and, uh, 'presentation issues' being allowed gatekeeper status for quite unfathomable reasons.

I've got one tomorrow, second interview, for an art world magazine. Proper job with my own desk and everything. I've already passed muster with the bad cop of the company and the good cop knows both my referees socially (and wants one of them for the magazine who has thus far proved elusive). I know the girl who did the job before me, and we had an illuminating chat today about wages etc. I could not be more forewarned = forearmed.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

JBR: was it one of those horrible New York employment agencies where the recruiters say 'axe' when they mean 'ask'?

I think it was, but my agent was a hard-boiled old lady who talked like Joan Rivers.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think if everyone in Chris's office loves football as much as he does, then Chris is perfectly reasonable to reject someone based on that at first sight silly criterion. Somebody might be brilliant at what they do but if they can't relate to the ppl they're going to be working with then they almost certainly shouldn't be awarded the position. When the World Cup was on in 2002 the office's resident football hater (ie the only person who didn't go to the pub before work each time a breakfast time match was on) would regularly make comments along the lines of "what is the earliest England can get knocked out of the competition so i can get some peace and quiet?" and quite a few normally placid ppl came v close to punching him!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

someone throw some of these interviews my way.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but there is such a thing as a "Hostile Work Environment".

At the ad agency, the creative team I was promoted to had a culture of talking about Viz Comics and Football. Needless to say, it was hell for me, and probably would have been for any other woman.

I can understand wanting to preserve an office environment, but when that office "environment" is shorthand for "30-something males" i.e. No Gurlz Allowed type mentality, then it's not a valid criterion and should not be allowed to be one.

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless I managed to give them a homemade lobotomy with the pencil! Then they've have a placid smile of contentment on their face!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite frankly, if you say "I really hate ________" in an interview and they offer you the job, you do NOT want to accept.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What if the job involves some sort of professional hating (of fun, for example)?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Critic jobs are better as freelance gigs, anyway. </cheapshot>

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was once told by the person interviewing me: "It says here that you like report-writing" (indicating something that I'd put in my covering letter in response to something on the job description) "...which is funny, coz most of us hate it!"

I was stupid to accept that job! The interviwer was the most Brentian person I'd ever worked with.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I did specifically say "I really HATE data entry" when interviewing for this job. In the contect of describing why I am so good at streamlining database processes, though. ;-)

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the positions they asked me if I'd be interested in, described in part on the website: "If math and science have always come easy to you or you just have a knack for breaking things, this might be the career opportunity for you."

Me in the phone interview: "I'm not sure, math and science have never come easy to me."

Them: "Math and science aren't very important in this position anyway."

Oh. Okay then.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, that is EXACTLY why I got good at VBA/Access! I figured that we were doing things in an awfully inefficient way, and causing me more work. I soon fixed that though!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it's interesting* how many ppl in offices, particularly in management positions, are still shortsighted enough, and have sufficient ignorance of technological advances that they see no alternative to large amounts of data-entry. I've noticed this particularly when new tracking systems are introduced....the number of times I've seen ppl get temps in to re-key all the data rather than getting it exported and uploaded automatically. I can't help thinking that whole employment agencies would go out of business if more ppl knew about such things as end of field and end of record delimiters and so forth.

* I originally typed amazing here then re-thought mid-sentence; it's not amazing at all given their asinine lapses in other areas!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, just to stress again, the office I'm in has not very many keen footie fans at all and is probably 60% female, I'm the only one here who actively likes music (lots of 12 cd people)

The reasonm he won't get the job is that he was a bit of a prat and that his personality won't fit the team's in any way whatsoever

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did you ask him who he supported then? I'd be a bit taken aback if asked that in an interview situation, unless I'd mentioned something about following football on my CV.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just wondering to be honest, I wonder it about most people.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be too hard on Chris here, at my first interview for job I want, they asked what the latest art openings I'd been to and fortunately they were V. Westwood including private party, one of the best I've ever been to, and Noble/Webster.

I have to go for the second at 4 and am just nipping out to pick up repaired stilettoes.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

also, the one for here was the only interview where I haven't been asked which team I support!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck Suzy!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(Finally!)

Thanks, Pink, I'm trying to swot up so I get it and stick to talking abt. subbing and features and stuff and not about the £$£$£$. And if they ask me what's the next art event I'm going to, I will be able to say Beck's Future's awards and party with 'secret' Beta Band gig in one week's time. PSYCH.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll totally ace it lady, i am sure!! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

GOOD LUCK SUZY

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be too hard on Chris here, at my first interview for job I want, they asked what the latest art openings I'd been to and fortunately they were V. Westwood including private party, one of the best I've ever been to, and Noble/Webster.

But your job involves art! Maybe Chris's job involves football?

(Sorry, I'll stop harping on this, but I know I would hate to lose out on a job because of my hobbies or lack thereof)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus Christ!!!! the decision had nothing to do with football - how many times do I have to say it?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Conversely, I would not be upset at all if I lost a job because they thought I liked to sing too much, largely because that would imply to me that if I had gotten the job, it would have been a BIG FUCKING ORDEAL every time something came up where I had to be out of the office for a show/performance.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you see I'd hire Dan, ......(but only if he sat by me and sang as I typed).... (and brought me tea and toast, dressed as a french grenadier)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

So Chris, did you not hire him because of the football answer? *ducks* ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got to be very careful with flippant questions in job interviews. You do leave yourself open to a discrimination case if
a) You haven't asked it to everyone
b) You judgement on employment is based on it.

And if your judgement on employment is not based on it then you really should not answer it. As far as I can see, the guy being unco-operative in the interview was more than enough to deselect him.

I always used to ask what music people liked when interviewing for bar sttaff/shop staff. I was once asked why was this relevant, it actually was to see what music they would put on the jukebox/bring with them. So now I ask them that: What music would you play when you worked in the shop. And on my notes it stated clearly why I asked it (for understanding the need for a degree of popularism in a waorkplace).

I hate the eye-contact thing in interviews cos I can't do it.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a good point Dan, of course I wouldn't want to work in an office where everyone resented me for not liking sports or whatever. I've always found it pretty easy to avoid, though.

Likewise, I do mention the music thing on my resume partly to test their reaction, and so they won't be surprised when I have to leave early on a Friday to get to a gig, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you see I'd hire Dan, ......

WOO! YAY! If we move to the UK I will remember this.

(but only if he sat by me and sang as I typed).... (and brought me tea and toast, dressed as a french grenadier)

Um. What's the salary again?

Tea Bitch (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(I bombed an interview my senior year of college because the inteviewer was looking for a shortstop for the company softball team!)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(The interview practically went like this:

"Hey, do you play softball?"
"No; in fact I am horrible at it."
"Oh. Do you play any sports at all?"
"Not since high school."
"... Well, thanks for your time."
"DON'T YOU WANT TO ASK ME ANY PROGRAMMING QUESTIONS???"
"No, not really.")

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

you'd be paid in Kudos, Teaboy, is that ok?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.jozev.com/images/Webimages/thumbs/050-3401_t.jpg

YUM (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

going all the way to a Greek island to collect yr paycheck??? blimey, that job really does suck.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Tiara, if you happen to be around and reading this...you're aware that ILM would quite simply EXPLODE if you told them your new job, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, my interview today was 'meh'. She said that the writing job I wanted was as good as filled, but that I could still apply for the QA/software testing job I'm less interested in. She didn't even give me the writing test, just an hour and a half of tests on made-up programming languages, analogies, logic, math, etc.

The actual interview was pretty quick. I didn't use most of the stuff I had mentally prepared, she just asked me a couple of scenario questions, said my band is cool, and that was basically that. I'm not terribly optimistic, but I did the best that I could and will find out in 7-10 days if I have another interview or not.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, good news is good news. I think I did well in my own interview but I won't know for a day or so. Urk!

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And then you can rule the world. (Good luck! I do like yer girlfriend's Snow Crash story, I do.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie....sorry, haven't been around on here for a few days. Well, seems a little boasty, but since you prompted....the prestigious title of Matador press officer seems to have fallen to me!! Horray!!

DJ Tiara, Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Tiara, nice to see you here and congratulations.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

So is it ok to send a thank you via e-mail?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(she's in the London office)

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy, let us know!
Oh & congrats to DJ Tiara

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you!! Hope your's is all good Suzy...

DJ Tiara, Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Your mag isn't M*d*rn P**nt*rs is it Suzy? I know a coupla foax who work there.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

nope

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Surprisingly, I got called back for a second (third, if you count the phone interview) and final interview for the QA/software testing position. Apparently it will consist of an interview and a test where I have to find bugs in a sample program/workflow plan they give me, or at least think of things to test for. I'm a bit nervous about the test since I haven't actually done anything like that before...advice from people who have done software testing would be WELCOMED.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the job, bitches! I'm actually going to have...*sniff* health insurance!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoo-ha. Congrats.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations Jordan!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I have health insurance too now!

Yay for us!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well done!

I don't have health insurance - I want for the dental care instead. My teeth still look like shite, though.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done!
