i hate it, i hate its banality, its refusal to play in the 20th century, its anglophil, lia, its dismissal of people like john clare, its just over the top old fashioned oriniess (sp).

what do y'all think ?

What's in the list?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, anthony. Imma KILL that nigga.

Orinieness? As it's Harold Bloom, you probably mean "horniness", dirty old bastid.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just a normal academic canon-forming / cannon-confirming exercise

ignore it and it'll go away

its poetry not books, and im sorry for the complete lack of spelling.

looking for a list as we speak...

Harold Bloom = Big fat dud

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw. His early books are great. He's a bit of a pompous windbag these days, but for 'Anxiety of Influence' alone, he is classic.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I went through a massive Harold Bloom phase when I was about 18. He's clearly a massive intelligence, and I admire most people who attempt aestheticism. His flat denial that aesthetic opinions can be informed by politics is kinda noble but essentially naive.

i dunno. it's still good he exists.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I agree with most of his opinions, I just hate the pompous way he states them.

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

he has 20 poems by Lewis Carrol and four by George Herbert.

how do we feel about this ?

FOR PRSIDETN!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anth, I'm still unclear why this book matters a damn. I don't care that he included Carroll or Hebert, I'm still very unlikely to read it.

one year passes...
it's funny that anthony accused a book of the best *english* poems of the century of "anglophilia."
