Guys: do you use make-up?

Well, do you? Or have you ever? I used to apply make-up to my face almost every day for about two years. Nothing too strong, only make-up powder, some eye-liner and perhaps some lining to my lips; maybe something more daring if I was going to a party. But it got to the point where I couldn't even go to the grocery shop across the street without make-up, because I didn't want the cashier to see how ugly I was in my natural state. Then I cut my hair off and grew a beard, and still continued to use make-up, but it didn't feel quite right. My friend said to me, "you can't use make-up if you have a beard", and she was right. So I quit using it, which was kinda relieving, because I had grown dependent to it. But I still kinda miss the days when I was young and dashing...

So, that's my story, what's yours?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

only lipstick and foundation

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Letting girls put eyeliner on you while facing straight at you = deeply hot. Actually going out with said eyeliner on = not.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

this whole thing smells of freshman year gothism

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

only lipstick and foundation

Oh, foundation, that's the word I was searching for, I'm not that familiar with English terms for make-up. Obviously I used that as well.

What sort of lipstick do you use?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Smell of a goth, mmmmmmmm... aquanet and clove cigarettes...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

this whole thing smells of freshman year gothism

No no, not goths, they're a whole different cathegory. I meant using make-up not as part of a particular subcultural style, but as an individual choice.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Goth

winterland, Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've only done it when playing dress-up, like for drag balls, Halloween parties, etc. (And once in high school, when some goth girls I knew decided to give me a makeover.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, serious answer? I used to go out with a guy who used foundation and concealer under his eyes every day to go to work. I didn't know this until I moved in with him. I found it rather perplexing, but more because I don't wear makeup at *all* (except for special occasions) than because he was male. Men have used makeup through much of history, I don't see anything odd about that.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've got most of my make-up tips from a male friend of mine (who admittedly is a glam rocker).

I find these goth accusations weird. Do I look like a goth?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, here's the link.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Painting a boy's nails = krowwwwrrrrrrrr. It gives you a good excuse to get close and touch fingers and look up and exchange glances &c.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys wearing make-up is such a huge turn-off for me. I don't know why especially since I was so into guy-wearing-makeup-bands when I was younger. But now. . .just can't stomach it.

no offense you make-up dabblers.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Once I had this silver nail polish applied for the weekend, and on the monday morning I realized I didn't have any nail polish remover, so I had to go to work with my silver nails. I was working in a library at the time, and a few customers gave me some weird looks.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen OTM - with my example it was more the excuse for prolonged unbroken eye contact + lots of face touching rather than actual wearing of makeup. 99% of blokes look ridiculous with makeup on.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to say, even when I was wearing make-up, I wasn't aiming for a rock star look. I used it modestly, just to look prettier.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Boys with a little foundation, a little transluscent powder equals total hottness. Lipstick = BLEUGH. Eyeliner = mostly BLEUGH. Though, on the right boy...

Marianna L, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Painting a guy's fingernails is a total turn-on. You're utterly right, Madchen!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I never used lipstick, and I only used eyeliner moderately. In fact, I've never fancied guys with too much make-up.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I guess foundation is OK if you don't notice it. Like I didn't for several months. But a hint of eyeliner is also K-rowr on the right guy. A touch of the glam is always better than full-on glam.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

For one thing, I was extra-popular amongst gay men back in those days.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys with eyeliner can be quite sexy, but anything else is just out in my book. Maybe some concealer for that huge spot, but that's it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I didn't want to talk about me only. Surely I'm not the only one to have done this? Come on guys!

Haha God do I regret posting on this thread already... ;)

"Barred"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i've often thought it might be interesting but, personally, i have enough trouble just putting my clothes on and getting out of the door in the morning, without having to worry about painting my face as well.

i secretly think it would be nice to wear mascara.
i also secretly think i am nearly 30, and it might not be dignified.

I did a one-off bit of runway modeling for a designer friend of a friend and was made-up for the event. Nothing so much as you could ever tell I was wearing make-up--a bit of powder and cream here and there, but I definitely looked 5 years younger, which when you're in your 30s sadly, actually starts to matter. Now, while I'm not about to start wearing the stuff everyday, I wouldn't mind every now and again sitting down on a stool in front of a comely make-up artist and having her rub my face while I flirt with her. Nice.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I wear eyeliner when I go out sometimes. I just draw a line then smudge it until it's a vague dark shadow, for the most part.

kind of raises the ol question though. since the males here are so meh about the idea, it really makes you wonder why so many females bother. yeah, i know there are threads about women and makeup...

Yes you got me, I'm so fucking goth my hair went black all by itself.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really baffled: most of the guys here seem to think make-up is cool only when a girl is applying it, which allows you to have a close contact with her. I thought ILE was more gay, or at least liberal-minded, than this... Haven't any of you felt good about wearing make-up, not just the process of someone applying it?

Also, we don't all live in a Scandinavian utopia.

Hmm, perhaps it's partly my own fault, but I wish you'd stop treating me as a representative of the whole Scandinavia. While people here might be somewhat more open-minded towards certain issues, it's not like every Scandinavian male is going out wearing eye-liner and mascara.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 10 April 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

lets distinguish; i ws really only talking bout everyday reliance tech like concealer etc. i have no probs with glammery, do yr own thing

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 10 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I just never would bother wearing make-up, I've no real problem with it but I wouldn't even know how to put it on. Besides I have a lovely natural face!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas, I kid, of course. But it seems like some of your comments on ILE seem to point out how "enlightened" you and your Finnish friends are -- especially about sex and gender. "Why can't everybody be okay with seeing their friends naked?" "Why can't all guys wear makeup like me?"

bret, Saturday, 10 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont think that its a good idea for me to wear make-up since i already look too feminine as it is

todd swiss (eliti), Saturday, 10 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Make-up in anything other than tiny quantities makes girls looks shit and the effect is magnified a hundred-fold on square-jawed, big-nosed, bristly men. Tuomas, your closeness with your feminine/queeer side is admirable but I'm beginning to sense a disturbing superiorty complex in just how damn liberal you are.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 10 April 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all in the eye of the beholder and it all depends on the girl. I don't think loads of make up is definitively bad.

It's all about how you put it on. Most blokes have no idea whatsoever how to apply makeup, hence most of them looking ridiculous when wearing it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 11 April 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, what Barry said.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 11 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I just don't find androgyny or girly-looking men attractive. I like my men to have callused hands and evidence that they are old enough to need to shave.

Skottie, Sunday, 11 April 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas's complaint that he's not representative of Scandinavia was put so mildly/sweetly/amusingly. I don't think T. has a liberal superiority complex, it's just like, he wanted to talk about wearing make-up, and no-one else would talk about it, so he was trying to extract some confessions, that's okay so far as I can see. It's an interesting question, I can understand why he'd want to force out the truth. Of course the truth is probably that most men don't wear make-up cos it's hard to apply and a time consuming pain, especially when no-one even expects it of you.

aq, Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

not only does no one expect it of you, but you might even get made fun of for wearing it. Shocking, I know.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I recently read an article from the Austin American-Statesman that states that there is actually a burgeoning men's cosmetics industry out there and that more men are actually putting on things that could be called "makeup". I think the article mentioned bronzer the most, but from what I understood from the article, applying bronzer is similar to applying (women's cosmetics') loose powder. So the numbers are increasing there. Which gets a tiny bit of me all giggly because that sort of thing intrigues me. And while not every male out there is going to look good with "makeup" on, there are some who would be absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous if they put some on.

But yeah, shouldn't force the guys into doing that, that sort of thing.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 11 April 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i get lots of girls to put eyeliner on me (usually to complement either a psychedelic japanese space pirate look or a quasi-rough-trade thing); i'd put it on myself but (a) they're better at it, & (b) they've got decent eyeliner.

i'd totally wear concealer/whatever/etc but I have no idea where to start, what to buy/do/&c. + poverty. blah blah raised male blah blah.
