Boxing: C/D

I've never seen much in the way of boxing discussion around here. (Or any, for that matter.) I've only started paying attention since I got HBO (Showtime boxing suXor, you have to put up with Max Kellerman on ESPN) and saw the Ward/Gatti fights. Now I try to watch all the HBO fights, but I still can't really tell a good fighter from a bad fighter, or tell who's winning a round unless it's embarassingly one-sided.

So is boxing the greatest sport on Earth or uncivilized, neanderthal bullshit?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to love boxing, but it's been years now since I've had HBO so I don't follow it anymore.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Friday Night Fights, I'm too cheap for premium cable.

hstencil, Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the only sport i can watch without falling asleep

kephm, Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the only sport I can watch without being totally bored

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Boxing's cool.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I find modern boxing pretty boring. 10 seconds of feigning to punch, followed by one real punch that usually misses, followed by 10 seconds of hugging. ESPN Classic sometimes shows old fights, Ali and whatnot, and those are much more fun to watch.
Anyone seen any K1 fights? It's basically kick-boxing, except with less rules. I think. There are no weight divisions, so you can see a 150 pounder who is quick and has good martial arts skills slowly but surely beat the hell out of a goliath.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That doesn't sound like any fight I've seen except for the heavyweights.

The lights and middles (and all the in-between classes) are a lot of fun to watch.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

true, I was speaking on heavyweights. I never seem to catch any of the other classes on TV.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

True Boxing fact: Barry McGuigan's real name is Finbar McGuigan.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That is the dullest fact ever.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a couple friends who are boxers (amateur of course). they're impressive.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

how is that a dull fact???

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only interested in sports where a ball is involved @ there is a skill in manipulating it. Punching people will never fit that bill.

drum (drum), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what if they're punching each other in the balls?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry = common shortened form of Finbar which is not a terribly uncommon Irish name. It's a fact, yes, but it's not very interesting. I like my interesting facts to have some degree of stuff that isn't totally self-explanatory about them. But I'm just picky.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

where's the skillfull manipulation though?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you've obviously never had your balls pummelled by a pro!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's isn't self-explanatory to like 99% of the world's population. I never would have guessed Finbar shortens to Barry.

x-post - not getting caught while you're punching the guy in the nuts

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

More foxy boxing!

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not. but it's not really that interesting either. it's like saying that an interesting tennis fact is that Andy Roddick's real name is Andrew Roddick.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No wait, more ORANGUTANG BOXING!

Leee O'Gaddy (Leee), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

stop teasing, slocki.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The only issue of Playboy I ever bought had Mia St. John nekkid in it. The women's boxing I've seen hasn't been very good. Sub-Friday Night Fights stuff.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Heavyweight boxing post-Ali: DUD (although Holmes and Tyson both fantastic fighters.)

Pretty much all boxing is way to glitzy for my taste (and the decisions on some of the big De La Hoya fights I've seen have been terrible, who refs these things these days?) but I guess other than the heavyweight division it's okay. Not a patch on watching old Sugar Ray Robinson or Ali fights though, oops OTM there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Obv I meant pre-Buster Douglas Tyson btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems easier to slag off boxing in this day & age when there are so many titles to be had & the whole thing seems a mockerey. I actually feel for the people who care about the sport in the same way that I care about football or rugby eg. Man Utd dissing the FA Cup (2000?) Eng v France at 21:00 on a Sunday night.

drum (drum), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No kidding - Andy Roddick is just his stage name?

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, it is the most interesting fact ever. As you were...

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Randy A. Oddick - that's the real name

drum (drum), Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Andy Rooney's name used to be Mickey, but I guess it was really "Andrew Mickey".

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic at times, though the heavyweight division is totally lacking right now in talent. 140 is where the action is at.

As for knowing about the skill level of fighters, you gotta dig sometimes to find out. I've been known to watch Univision, ESPN2, Fox Sports, and both of the premiums boxing cards in a weekend. Only when I'm feeling particularly devoted and I like something about each card, though.

Alan Conceicao, Thursday, 8 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Last week on ESPn Classic they showed an Ali fight in his prime where he stopped advancing and stood with his hands on his hips and waited for the other fighter to cme forward. The other fighter didn't, and put his hands on his hips like Ali, defiant. Then Ali smiled at him and punched him three times in the head.

Anyone buying the Mayorga-De La Hoya PPV tomorrow? I figure it's a better use of money to just wait a week and watch it on regular HBO.

Anyone else gonna watch Monte Barrett vs. Nikolai Valuev on HBO tonight? Valuev is fucking 7ft tall, 320 lbs, undefeated in 44 matches. It's his American TV debut.

http://msn.foxsports.com/id/5311928_7_2.jpg
Holy shit.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 8 October 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've found a fitting opponent...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 8 October 2006 01:31 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit, this guy is half shaved yeti, half bulldozer. Barrett's a gamer, but I don't think he has a chance.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 8 October 2006 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

ugh, what a joke. Four rounds and I give up.

The light-heavy fight on before was great, as was the flyweight bout on Showtime.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 8 October 2006 02:41 (nineteen years ago)

Barrett's trainer jumped in and stopped it in the 11th. Barrett gave it all he had but Valuev just took it, so by the end he's running on empty with Valuev, who didn't even seem winded, knocking him down all over the place.
Not too exciting.

Random bargain bin book purchase (David Remnick's "King of the World") is getting me sort of fired up about boxing, although I never had much interest in the past. I think it seems disappointing to watch the real thing at first when you've grown up on choreographed movie fights (true of any fight sport, really), but I'm starting to appreciate it a bit more from what I'm reading. I'm even considering signing up for a boxing gym instead of a regular gym in the Fall - there were boxers in my family and I've been told I might have a good build for it, although I don't exactly have the greatest reach. I also have tons of pent up rage and frustration to share.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

The thing that always scared me about pro, non-helmet boxing is not so much how bloodied up they get but the potential for brain damage. I guess that was the one thing I took away from Rocky V.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

and from the life of Muhammad Ali

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

I read somewhere that the move from 14-15 round fights to 12 makes brain damage much less of an issue, but I don't remember the reasoning (or if it was even based on medical research).

milo z, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

i was going to mention ali

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

this thread made me go look up marvin hagler's entry on wikipedia and i was surprised by how many of the fights i remember. mustafa hamsho, caveman lee (who didn't last a round against hagler and was renamed "cave-in lee"), the title fight at wembley stadium that ended in a riot after hagler beat alan minter (i watched this on the wide wide world of sports on a saturday afternoon with my dad), the duran fight, that first fight against tommy hearns (the greatest fight i've ever seen), and john the beast mugabi. i never got to see that last fight against sugar ray leonard because there was a flood in the town where i grew up and we had no electricity. i listened to it in the dark in my bedroom on a battery powered radio.

now i need to track down the b movies he made in italy after he retired.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

i'd go with duk koo kim before ali.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man I remember that Minter fight.
I remember excitedly getting up in the morning to the news that Sugar Ray Leonard "won" (he was my fave).

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

Another great fight i recall watching was Lloyd Honeyghan against Don Curry. Think that was delayed showing the next morning but My dad and I didn't know the result and were shouting at the tv for Lloyd. We didn't think he was going to win but as the fight went on we realised he might do it. Wonder if that fight is as great as I remember it.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Honeyghan
I remember all those fights!

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

Honeyghan stunned the boxing fraternity when he forced super-star Donald Curry to retire at the end of round six on September 27 of 1986 to win the world Welterweight title. Before the fight Curry dismissed his unknown foreign opponent, asking "Who is this ragamuffin?". Honeyghan adopted the title "ragamuffin" or "Ragamuffin Man" with relish.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

I think Lloyd Honeygan is 2nd only to Joe Calzaghe in my top UK boxers of my lifetime.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man I remember that Minter fight.

he was the guy who said 'no black man will take my title' then hagler beat the ever loving shit out him. i remember minter's face getting all busted open and a surprsing amount of blood on his towel (surprising to me, i was like 7 or 8 at the time).

chicago kevin, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

he did? I dont remember that, I was 7 i think.

ohh you're right

in 1980, he was finally given the opportunity all fighters dream of: On March 16 of that year, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he was given a shot at champion Vito Antuofermo's world Middleweight title at the Caesars Palace. He won the title by a 15 round decision, and in a rematch, he retained the world title by a knockout in eight rounds. Minter's run as world champion came to an end on September 27 of that year, when he was stopped on cuts in three rounds to Marvin Hagler at Wembley Arena in London. After the fight was stopped, Minter's supporters caused a riot, throwing beer cans and glass into the ring and both boxers had to be ushered away by the police. Prior to the fight, Minter stated on the BBC that "no black man is going to take my title away". He later retracted this statement and said he meant "no man" is going to take my title away. Hagler came to London even more motivated to win the championship.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

anybody see Klitschko/Thompson? it sounds like it was good.

I read that book, Hurting; it was really good! I'm gonna get this soon, why cause it look intrsting, but also because my supervisor wrote it. Looks like an undertaking (it's hueg!), but also looks totally awesome

This Ali vs. Holmes doocumentary on ESPN right now ("Muhammad and Larry") is 1) incredible and 2) almost impossible to watch it's so sad

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

Ali post-'75 just gets sadder and sadder.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

I remember Ali interrupting a Larry Holmes interview on the Johnny Carson show, in advance of the big fight. How sad Ali ended that way.

How great a fight would it be to see Ali -- in his prime -- against Mike Tyson -- in his prime?
