My goldfish is a retarded potato

Anybody know their way around aquarium fish? For the past week, Fred, my four-year-old goldfish, has shifted from spending most of the time at the top of the tank to hanging around the bottom. Kinda just sitting there. Lethargic. This has never happened before. Thoughts?

I'm not sure how to feel about this, anyway. I mean, he's four years old, which is three years and 51 weeks longer than I expected him to live. I'd like him to live -- he's been a mainstay in my apartment life for a while now and I'm proud of the bugger for surviving a cross-country car trip six months back -- but it's not exactly tearing me apart either. Do people mourn their goldfishes' passing?

Just wanted to put that out there.

when i was 7 i cried because my fish died. and i only had her for a week.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 9 April 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i mourned my fishes. nothing wrong with that.

you've had him for a long time, he's your buddy.
i hope everything's alright.

hang in there, fred!

the angry cowboy (dick), Friday, 9 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what do his fins look like? any white spots? or flaking?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 9 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and yes, i mourned my goldfish's passing too. i haven't had fish in a long while, but i still have the tank. i should buy some.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 9 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No white spots or flaking or anything like that. I'm wondering if I should change the food I'm giving him. It's only been recently that I've been doing right by the fella. Until six months ago he was living in a small bowl, and I graduated him to a tank with a heater, pump/filter, etc.

(Fred, by the way, was the dumbest music promo I ever received. It was sent to me by some band that wanted to promote its latest album. Note to musicians: Don't send living creatures to writers. Please.)

(No, the band wasn't Phish.)

Heater? Does a goldfish require a heater? Perhaps that may be contributing to his lassitude...

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

cook him with butter

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 9 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you maybe feeding the fish too much? If they overeat I think they can get pretty lethargic (or dead). It's been a while since I had fish in the house, but then again they were tropical. (And yeah, the heater seems weird, never heard of that for goldfish, myself.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

cook him with butter

Statements like that make baby Jesus cry, you know.

I haven't changed his feeding pattern; if anything, I've been giving him less food. Some random googling suggests he may have some sort of bladder problem. I'll have to chat with the friendly folks at Aquarium World in Chicago and see.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Friday, 9 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm sounds constipated. I totally lurve my fish theres no shame in it. I have a blind one- he had his eyes eaten by the bullies in the pet shop- and he is by far the best fish I have ever known. *sob* Best fishes for your ailing fred.

jeska, Saturday, 10 April 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah wishes. I am also a retarded potato

jeska, Saturday, 10 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

He sounds constipated. You should get him some green plants to nibble and feed him steamed spinach once a week. You should also put quarter of a teaspoon of sea salt (dissolved in hot water) into his water. And get him some goldfish tonic. My fish are eight years old and still going strong, so I doubt it is his age .

If he floats to the top of the tank you should also assume that he has swim bladder problems which affect his balance. This can be caused by many things such as poor health, but is usually caused by gulping in air when he eats his dried food floating on the water surface. This is distressing for fishy and you could look at changing his food or making sure you feed it to him soaked rather than dry.

Finally he could probably use a pal so think about getting him another fish. But one that you have quarantined and observed for a few days before you put him into the tank. I am glad that you have put him in a tank; bowls are cruel.

Here is a good site for goldfish queries.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Monday, 12 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
We have two goldfish (or, it's not goldfish really, it's some kind of goldfish-related species, but I don't know what they're called in English), and one of them is ill! It sits on the bottom of the bowl, sometimes up-side-down, takes an occasional swim but mostly just lies there. What should we do? Will the healthy fish be stressed out by the sick one? Will the sick fish die for sure (in which case we should probably mercy-kill it) or can it be something temporary? Can too much food make them sick, in which case, how long should we starve them?

My heart aches when I see the poor little fish!! Some googling suggests that the bowl is way too small, maybe that's the problem, but we're actually just watching them for a friend who went abroad and we can't really afford to buy a big tank for them. I wonder if it'd be best to try and give them to a pet shop, but then again, they're not my fish to give away...

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:20 (twenty years ago)

They shouldn't be in a bowl that is for sure. Are you overfeeding them? Is the bowl clean? Try to have a look at a specific goldfish site as there as so many things that can be wrong with them, that can be easily rectified.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think we may possibly have overfed them. Have changed all water and washed the bowl very carefully. I read on a goldfish site that it might be constipated, so now we're going to try putting some salt in the water and giving it a green pea to eat as that is supposed to help. We'll have to start looking into buying a fish tank.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Did you just put water from the tap into the bowl? I'm not sure about goldfish kept in bowls (we only ever had them in a pond in the garden) but isn't the water supposed to be a specific PH?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:46 (twenty years ago)

you need to get a water conditioner, because chlorine can be poisonous to them. You should be able to pick it up at any shop that sells fish stuff.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I have water conditioner!

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

they can generally do without food for a good couple of days, and it won't do them any harm. I think it would be a good idea to give it a pea - blanch the pea and take the skin off before you feed it to them, so it's easier for them to eat.

There are quite a few specialist message boards for fish - this one http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/index.html is useful, though more people are on the tropical boards than the coldwater one.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for all the tips!

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 7 October 2004 10:55 (twenty years ago)

wow, i didn't know that ILX was such a hotbed of golfish knowledge!

here's my two issues, broken into several questions:

i've got one goldfish (flojo) in a biorb tank (so it has a filter and loads of water and everything). i've had an algae problem for the last couple months. have read stuff online and done as suggested-- partial water changes up to every other day, and bigger one weekly. but it doesn't go away. i'm wary of using chemicals, but is that the only way to sort it for good? i guess the other option is to get an algae-eating fish, but i've heard they can develop a taste for fish slime and suck a hole in little flo (!)

have also been thinking about getting her a friend. don't have another tank, and know i need to keep a new fish quarantined, could i just be really ghetto about it and keep the new fish in a big bucket for a week or so? or is that terrible?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

p.s. flo is NOT a retarded potato. she's lovely.

i'll post pics of her once the tank is all clean.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Keeping the new fish in a bucket for a week is fine Colette. With regards to the algae problem, just get the relevant treatment for it.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Hanna, is the fish 'swollen' looking? If so, this is a disease called 'dropsy', I don't know if you can get anything to treat this. I has a fifteen year old goldfish, Agnetha, who developed this, sadly she died, but an aquariam buff told me what the problem was.

See how I use the word 'she'?

Like I knew. I miss her still, I was proud of her longevity.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's swollen, at least not more so than the other one (and that one seems healthy). Maybe a little fat, but it's not swollen as in bloated. And the scales are fine, colours are fine, etc. But then again, I'm not really used to handling fish, so maybe it is? Argh! I googled "dropsy", and that seems quite serious, so for now I'm going to convince myself it's just constipation and hope for the pea diet to help...

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:35 (twenty years ago)

Colette, my mum's got two goldfish, and she's got a big algae problem, but there's not much to do other than regular cleaning as well as water changes. Get a new cloth/sponge and set it aside for cleaning the algae off everything. There aren't many cold water algae eating fish, and they'd probably need a bigger tank. Is the tank in direct sunshine? That promotes algae growth, so if so you could try moving it into a more shady position. Does the biorb have a light? If so then try having that on for less time. I've got a timer on my tank, it comes on for three hours in the morning, then goes off and comes back on again for the evening.

My tank:

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Props for the 1st use of the word "dropsy" since the 17th century there! (oddly I even looked up its meaning eysterday so I actually know what you're talking about).

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday? That's a freaky coincidence!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

My goldfish, Onefish, used to do the same thing, sitting lethargically at the bottom of the tank for ages - we found it was often after we'd just cleaned the tank and put fresh water in, so we guessed it was probably a bit of shock and a bit that we hadn't left the water to warm up long enough. Pouring a little bit of hot water in the tank seemed to liven him up pretty quickly.

However, after a few months of this, one day he just didn't revive. So whether he had some underlying illness all along, or whether he just died of old age (he was over two years, not bad for a little goldfish), who knows?

Mog, Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Fishy died... :-( His friend looks lonely.

Hanna (Hanna), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh Penelope
Are you filled with air
Swallowed oxygen
That makes you float up?
Is it dropsy?
Will your lungs swell?
It's depressing me
To see you struggle

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I read this thread's title as "My girlfriend is a retarded potato."

snazz, Friday, 8 October 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
i now have two new fantails in my shiny new fish tank. I've named them "Clu" and "Bit", as i'm a geeky Tron fan.

Neither are retarded potatoes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 June 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like a new fishy but I'd have to get a narrow tank, none of my available surfaces are any wider than about five inches.

Rumpsy, get one! Can you not get one that's already on a stand like the hexagonal ones.

I can't stop watching mine, they're better than telly.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 June 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

actually i think they're octagon shaped
