I gotta go there April 22-24 for work and I'm gonna need something else to do besides what I'm there for. Preferably something other than getting sloshed at the hotel bar with insurance people.

Me to thread!

Actually, I have no idea. I live an hour away, but I haven't been there because everyone keeps saying there's not much point and you may as well just drive to Chicago or Cincinnati.

That isn't helpful to you, though :/

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

If you just want to put some beers in your gullet in an interesting locale, check out the Chatterbox, which is a small jazz club downtown. It is always a good time.

The Rathskeller is also cool place to go, it is a German restaurant/bar and has been open since 1894. There are also a couple of other bars within walking distance.

This site will give you the lowdown on any music going on in town.

Cincinnatti doesn't have anything on Indianapolis these days.

earlnash, Friday, 9 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

wait another month and go to the 500.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been there several times, but I can't really think of anything to recommend. There's a quirky restaurant, but I can't remember the name.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

there's actually a decent Jewish deli (for the Midwest) just south of downtown, but unfortunately I can't remember the name of it.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Shapiros is the Jewish deli, it is very good.

earlnash, Friday, 9 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's it, definitely worth going to while in Naptown.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

India-no-place.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Though there is the Hoosierdome. And the site of my first Cracker Barrel experience.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what hotel nza?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly have no idea ha ha. Shock and awe if there is no bar. I'll just take a 12-pack to my room and be all Kool Keith "hotel unknown drinkin' brew watchin' Sesame Street".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

once, i ate acid and went to the art museum. they have this big stone amphitheater in the back and it was a great place for me to run around and be on acid in indianapolis.

the only other time i went there was for the jazzfest a few years back. the city was rife with the stench of nastiness that weekend. sort of soured my whole opinion of it. i'm not being metaphorical or anything. it really smelled bad there.

the angry cowboy (dick), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

ALERT ALERT INDIANA DOES NOT SELL BEER ON SUNDAY!!!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i ate acid that time, too. the stinky time, that is.

the angry cowboy (dick), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's okay Teeny 22-24 is Thurs Fri Sat. I'll be back by Sunday hopefully.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the art museum isn't bad, could be a little better for a town that size.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, yeah the art museum is really good if you're into that sort of thing. There is also an OTB downtown. The new State Museum of Indiana that just opened is kinda lame but there's a nice park nearby (and it's right next to downtown, which is kinda neat). When I was little I loved the Children's Museum, but I doubt you're taking your boy along.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(they just added a lot of new stuff to the art museum if you haven't been there in a few years, stence)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Well holy shit The Bad Plus are playing Thursday night! Hot diggidy! Thanks for the link Jeff!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't been to the art museum since 1998, so it's probably changed by now.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

robert bradley's blackwater surprise is playing friday night at the patio too.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

There's the NCAA Museum. You can watch the Stanford/Cal kickoff-return-for-TD-running-thru-the-marching-band-because-the-suckaz-thought-they-had-won play over and over and over again

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"ALERT ALERT INDIANA DOES NOT SELL BEER ON SUNDAY!!!"

You cannot get carry out, but you can get sloshed to your soul's delight in every bar that serves food.

The Eiteljorg is an interesting museum, if you are into such things.
http://www.eiteljorg.org/

You could also take a stroll down to the new state office building and see the worse statue of Abraham Lincoln ever created by mankind. I swear it looks like something out of Gumby.

earlnash, Friday, 9 April 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well holy shit them folks at The Patio better go ahead and reserve me a stool, damn. This is shaping up to be a weekend of insurance agency software talk, stoned art museum browsing, and hella live music EXTRAVAGANZAING!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

If you are going to The Patio, there is a great Greek restaurant called The Parthenon that is right across the street. During the weekend they sometimes have people playing those wacky instruments with about 40 strings and a belly dancer whirling around the place.

earlnash, Friday, 9 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

On a side note - Nickalicious, Mrs Nordic's best friend who we always used to visit in Chicago is now moving to Louisville (to be become a practicing dance therapist!), so I might be up for a Kentucky FAP sometime this summer!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of Kentucky FAPs I can't make Derby this year. But I might have to go to Louisville next week.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When is the Derby?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only visited Indianapolis once, but I had a blast. I went to Colts game with my brother. The RCA dome is surprisingly small and cozy. Totally different vibe from the Silverdome, which is the only other domed stadium I've been in. We ate at St. Elmo steakhouse after the game. Peyton Manning was there in an adjacent room.

Then I went to the Slippery Noodle? I think that's what it's called. A blues bar. It was ok, I think, but by that point I was pretty wasted. Then I went and bought old psych records from St@n Denski. Then I slept in my car. I got a speeding ticket on my way back the next morning, for only going like 5 MPH over the speed limit!! I never paid it; the bastards aren't getting my money. So now I can never get pulled over in Indiana or I guess I'll get arrested or something.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that an Indiana thing? We got two tickets in one week once, and we can't have been going more than 4 or 5 miles over. Luckily, we got them both thrown out.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The children's museum is amazing no matter how old you are! There is no age limit for the carousel, or anything, for that matter. I'm exactly an hour from Indy, so we used to go there as a treat when I was younger. Now that I'm older I recommend The Claddaugh, an Irish pub downtown (around the circle) and it's not twee and they have proper fish 'n chips and black 'n tan. Also, if you want to do the whole "indie/bohemian" for lack of a better term the Broadripple part of town is fun. It has good ethnic restaurants and The Vogue/Patio has good bands, (well, it did years back-I think it still might)

Whatever you do-don't go to Tiki Bob's downtown-it was like a frat party in hell. We ran away as fast as we could...

Joc, Friday, 9 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, every year it's the first Saturday in May.

Broheems, I'd bet Indiana is reciprocal with Illinois.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true what they say about Reggie Miller and the Watson's girl?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 9 April 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Stence, I'm pretty sure I got a ticket in Chicago after the Indiana trip, and they never mentioned it...

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 9 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

OK, so I'm going to be in Indianapolis for a full week! Previous visits have only lasted a day at the most, so let's resurrect this old thread, eh?

admrl, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I grew up there, lived there for 30 years, and can't think of much to recommend. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum, if you like cars. The art museum was renovated last year. My mom works at the Eiteljorg, if you're interested in a tour. The Children's Museum is pretty great actually. Walking along the canal in Broad Ripple and looking at stately old homes on the Old Northside maybe. The James Whitcomb Riley house is east on 40 about 45 minutes out, if you're into Orphan Annie etc. Check http://www.indy.org for standard tourist stuff.

Jaq, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

(I'm always just visiting family whenever I'm there and eat at the 2 places I think I miss: White Castle (6 burgers/onion chips) and Steak 'n Shake (double steakburger/their skinny fries/orange freeze). Then I drive by all my old houses/schools and think "huh".)

Jaq, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

definitely hit the broadripple canal

elan, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

get a bike and ride the monon to or from broad ripple. it makes a lovely half-day.

elan, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

six years pass...

i'm in Indianapolis this week and it's not the most exciting place i've ever visited. Gonna hit up Luna and Indy CD & Vinyl tomorrow. Walked down Mass Ave and took a cab out to a restaurant on Broad Ripple. Even though wikipedia says there are 800K+ in the city, it seems totally dead. Nice looking place though.
