So I just got the news that I'm going to San Francisco on Monday for business, and will arrive downtown sometime mid-afternoon. I'll probably be a bit jetlagged so I doubt I'll want to stay out TOOOO late Monday night but if anyone in the area (I'll be staying near Mason/California) wants to meet up for a beer or something let me know; I'll also probably be looking for a good place around there for dinner. (good meaning relatively cheap but non-dodgy.)

Because the event I'm attending doesn't start until later on in the day on the 13th, I also may be up for a trip to Amoeba or Aquarius during the late morning early afternoon.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't do daytime on the 13th, but either evening is fine. I still want to try gygax's chinese hipster bar. Also - yes! food!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Chinese hipster bar, eh...? Come come, elucidate!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

errrrrr, I can't. I'm not hip enough.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

is it hipper than the buddha bar? i haven't been hip in quite a while so i should probably just stay away from this thread.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

no, really, it's okay.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, it's not chinese but it's on the edge of chinatown. and it's not really hipstery, the DJs are good that's all.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and sean, i'm gonna be at PacBell SBC Park both those days but I'll be up for something if you're still awake.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna go to a Giants game!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends; I'll be three hours into the future for the duration of the trip, so 9pm will be like midnite for me. What time will you be free?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

monday will probably be fairly early (7pm I hope) but tuesday will be much later (10pm-11pm).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

strange isn't it, to want to hold onto calling the place PacBell?

sean, you're going to be close to a couple of my favorite places - for dinner - Borobudur, inexpensive indonesian food (try the roti prata) at 700 post/jones and then you can always have drinks at the Owl Tree 601 post/taylor

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I've never tried Indonesian before...I was thinking of maybe trying to find Vietnamese and getting a big-ass bowl of pho, but roti prata sounds good too. Maybe if anyone is interested in meeting for dinner that night, we could do that.

Monday would be better anyhow, gygax...the even goes pretty late on Tuesday anyhow, and I'll probably be wiped out afterwards...and have to be on the shuttle to the airport by 10:30am anyhow.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Owl Tree is closed Mon/Tue/Thursday (which sucks)... However, the Monday night punk rock DJ at the Hemlock I highly recommend (not far from Union Square, $5 cab max).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

if i were free either of those nights i'd be there but i've already got plans. i'm with gygax, the best place to be is the hemlock. but if you just like to drink you can try the Ha Ra.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@ml, are you in for some foodstuffs on Monday? Maybe the Indonesian place?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely. I get out of work (not TOO far from you) at 5.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay. I'll be checked in at the Fairmont, hopefully under my own name. If you want to drop me an email with your contact info I'll do the same in return (cell, etc).

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Anything after 4pm is out for me. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure. Oooooh, Fairmont. There's always the tonga tiki room thingy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Or I could just say fuck it and call in sick on Tuesday and we could go to Amoeba. God that's tempting.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the Fairmont is nice. So is the Mark Hopkins.

hstencil, Friday, 9 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha DO IT AD@M DO IT!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I might. I mean really.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I got sick days.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Fairmont the one that was built on top of that overpass? I was at the Mark Hopkins last time I was in...thank god someone else is covering dis shit.

Alex: Tuesday earlier in the day perhaps?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure. I'm totally up for another FAS and a trip to Amoeba.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I was gonna ask WHO THE HELL IS PAYING FOR THIS?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I can do a late shift Tuesday. Would have to be back downtown by 2:00.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, is your hipster chinese bar Li Po? went there one time and my friends convinced me to drink the Crazy Juice. i think it's chinese rice wine or chinese whiskey. either which way, that shit fucks you up. like hard core. after i drank it, these friends that convinced me told me that they weren't having any and wouldn't ever have it again saying it makes them start fights.

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 9 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, lipo is way more hipster than this place (it's called ez5).

the dj is good, but the crowd can be kinda sterile (although we were there for m@L1@'s gettogether and we took the place over).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump. Anyone else up for Borobudur on Monday night?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, it looks like I can do Monday, but sadly I won't be able to stick around for too long. On the plus side, I am now getting out of work around 4, which is nice,

AND

There may be a surprise guest.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am available around 8pm. I owe Sean C a burrito.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just wrote Sean to explain, but I'm not gonna make it tonight. Maybe if we had another FAS tomorrow, I could do it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

So who was the surprise guest?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

so i'm at the hotel now, just washed off that foul airplane smell. meeting with another friend within the hour I hope, poss for a fab trip to aquarius. if anyone else wanted to meet up for dinner lemme know via my usu email, i'll try to check regularly.

sean c in sf, Monday, 12 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, what's a FAS?

sean c in sf, Monday, 12 April 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget it, Sean...it's Chinatown.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(Fancy A Sandwich)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So who was the surprise guest?

I'll give you a clue - he just moved from the TenderNob to the Upper Haight.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(and he doesn't check ILX anymore)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

chinatown? eh? what am I missing @d@m?

sean c in sf, Monday, 12 April 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(And his first name is in the title of this thread)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just being obtuse, Sean. Sorry. You use of "eh" is very authentically Canadian to me, though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Made it down to Aquarius this aft and going to head to Borobudur with another friend for 7ish if anyone else wants to find me (you can probably still find me on the last whattaya look like thread).

sean c in sf, Monday, 12 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

tomorrow i'd like to head for amoeba in the early morningish. @d@m, can you meet for lunch in that area? if not I might drop by yr office just to say hi.

Afternoon I probably wouldn't mind hitting ocean beach in search of a few sand dollahs.

sean c in sf, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I can definitely do lunch around there (I only live a dozen or so blocks away.) What kind of food are you thinking of, Sean?

Also I think you may be more likely to find used syringes than sand dollars on Ocean Beach. ;)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

awwwww mannnn, the sand dollahs I got at ocean beach several years back got broken, I wanted to replace em. boo.

don't know what type of food for tomorrow, anything wd be cool. any korean places near there?

sean c in sf, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There used to be a Korean BBQ on Lower Haight, but I think it got replaced by an Indian place. Lessee, Upper Haight has lots of crepe places, Thai places, cheap but sub-Mission burrito places, a bunch of cheap/average at best Chinese places, two or three heavy breakfast places, a couple of cafe/delis, two pizza by the slice places, and a sort of hippyish but very good kebab restaurant. Lower Haight has a sausage shop, a BBQ place, Ethiopian, Indian, Middle-eastern, more Thai and some scary places.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't tell me you're going to Java1 too Sean?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but i'm planning to drink a lot of java today, as every day! actually here to cover a video card launch tonight.

I learned last night that drinking malty beer and then climbing up three steep blocks is a bad idea for someone with asthmatic tendencies. but i'm better now I hope!

i'm thinking of taking off to ocean beach early this morning and then wandering back to the haight and the area around Amoeba for 11ish, if the timing all works out. anyone in?

sean c in sf, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's good for me. I'll meet you out front at about 11 then (I'll ring you in a sec just to make sure you get this.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)
