Help! Someone's saying I'm spamming them and don't know why

I think this has been discussed before but perhaps you could point me in the direction of the thread cos I couldn't find it.

I got a very stroppy email to my hotmail address saying, 'stop sending me spam, aiight!' I have no idea what this guy is talking about. I'm not sending anyone spam - as far as I know! Is someone using my email addy to send him spam? Or is there another explanation?

It's not about the Simon Cowell poems, is it?

Since spammers fake all the "from" information in their emails, it's possible that your email has been used as a return address for spam that went to someone else. It's also possible that the "you're spamming me!" message is designed to get you to reply and thereby confirm your email address so you can be sent even more spam.

this has happened to me. I got a message from a woman in italy saying 'YOU are the fool!'. beneath her message was the 'original' message from 'me', saying simply 'Something is Fool' with a link to a pron site.

I've also gotten a message from a good friend of mine saying simply 'is this the text you copied from?' with an .bin file attached. I almost opened it, but instead replied saying simply 'did you send this?' Nope. He hadn't sent it.

Have also gotten a message from my own domain name, "staff@xxxx.net", saying "We have been receiving complaints about spam being issued from your e-mail address. Please run the attached executable to rid your computer of all viruses." If my server weren't run by my one good friend from his bedroom, I'm not sure if I wouldn't have run the .exe file.

In short: e-mail is thoroughly broken, and trust no one.

I've probably thrown out more than one actual notice of a surprise inheritance, and e-mail's so broken I don't even care.

Haha Prude, that was my very first thought! But no, it's a different and unknown addy, and the guy is really annoyed and seems to be getting attachments from me. I told him to block my address. Thanks for the info, folks. I've also blocked his email as he might be a bullshit artist - but I don't think he is.
