Being awoke at night by a mosquito buzzing is the worst fuckin thing in the world.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

desperate, the only thing which makes me glad I live on a coldish country.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the mosquito was my childhood nemesis. i went around hunting them with a nerf crossbow.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny how when you're a kid you think if you kill enough of them you might actually reduce the population somewhat.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

fuckin' nasty muthafuckas. . .

lots of nile virus 'round here too. i swear if one these pieces of shit gives me a fatal disease. . .it's gonna be on!!

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too early for mosquitos around here.

I was in the Dominican Republic for a while though and had a mosquito net on my bed. If every little bit wasn't tucked into the mattress, I'd end up covered in bites. And it was kinda disconcerting to open my eyes and see all the bugs buzzing against the net.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

::shudder::

I hope West Nile comes back with a vengeance this year!

oops (Oops), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i live in mangrove flatlands. as its cooling now they've wothdrawn somewhat.

they bite me = sweet blood.

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Mosquitos are kinda one of the reasons why I don't really do anything outdoorsy once the weather starts really warming up. Even before I developed a huge hatred of hotter temperatures, I was already very dismayed and disturbed by mosquitoes.

Thanks to Julia, I know now that the Dominican Republic is SO not the place to be. :)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so glad this thread isn't what I worried it might be.

Huck, Sunday, 11 April 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mosquitos don't bite me anymore, I don't know why. Even when I'm in places absolutely thick with them, I don't get a single bite.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 11 April 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sons of motherfuckers. I went to bed early, which I kind of needed to do, and then I felt an itch on my foot. Itched more. Just an itch I think. Itched more. Maybe it is a mosquito bite, I thought, so I turned on the light. I found the mosquito. (One useful tip: I've found that they tend to hang out not too far from their victim most of the time. If you are in bed, you have a good chance of spotting your mosquito tormenter waiting patiently on the wall, above your bed, or maybe on the part of the wall that the mattress hides.) I tried to smash it but I missed, so now I'm back out of bed and online. I don't have any bug spray in my new apartment. (I know the fumes are icky but I'd rather sleep in toxic fumes and lose a few years of my life than be kept awake by a mosquito.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but this apartment building has a security guard in the lobby! How did this thing get in here?

midges may be worser than mosquitos. they bite just as hard but are harder to detect.

To stop the itch either ice 'em, or press on them and rub them until the itchy poison kind of gets dispersed and out of that one area. That's the only help I ever found and it's probably psychosomatic but whatever gets you through, man.

hate them , was getting bitten quite a bit last year. Was normally midges which are just itchy but when it was mosquito bites I'd also wind up with the digit or whatever getting swollen. Thumb suddenly being twice its size or back of hand starting to look like a baseball glove.
I was told that tumeric would reduce swelling, it does when applied in a paste made with water. Only slight drag is that it does tend to leave a yellow stain. Think you can get it in most places that sell spices though.

I bought a book on the Mosquito last year from a charity place I got a lot of cheap books from. Meant to read it immediately and still haven't got around to it.

My friends are convinced I have West Nile virus. 101 degree fever for a week, seeing a doctor today. And yet: not only do I not remember getting bit by a mosquito, I haven't noticed any mosquitos at all this summer.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

cool book

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

what I meant to type was that someone told me once that the itchiness of a mosquito bite is caused by all the histamines that have gathered at the area. what you can do is apply a really, really hot towel or sponge to the area. the heat does something like use up the histamines? and then it takes your body a couple of hours to generate more histamines to cause the itchiness.

try it - take a really hot shower or something!

jack chick-fil-A (dayo), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

(when you apply the hot towel/sponge, the area is gonna feel itchy like crazy, then it'll go away)

jack chick-fil-A (dayo), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

Do ALL of these

So it turns out I don't have West Nile virus, but I do have pneumonia. As much as it pains me to say it, sorry mosquitoes. I mistook you for the wrong bug.

I find that rubbing Purell into inflamed bites is effective for relief. Burns like shit for a minute but then it's good for a while.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 10 June 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

The itching is a histamine reaction. An antihistamine lotion works well. So does taking an antihistamine pill. Benedryl or the generic equivalent (diphenhydramine HC) is the cheapest, most effective antihistamine around and has a long track record. If you take a Benedryl pill beware of drowsiness and do not drive if you aren't used to the stuff.

Aimless, Monday, 10 June 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

Ordered a Therapik last week, after reading a couple of positive reviews. My wife and kids get welts, I'm fairly atopic in general but hardly react to mosquitos (lifetime of practice on the Canadian prairies). Therapik looks like it might work -- a little heat to denature the allergenic proteins. Worth a shot for well under 20 bucks. I'll report back once we've tried it.
