DG's Dilemma

*Sigh*...I am currently in some lame band which I really want to get out of (and I mean REALLY), but not being the best at dumping people I don't know the best way to go about it without hurting anyone's feelings. Help! [NOTE: no-one in those photos on the site is me, thank goodness.]

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New dumping answers.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get yourself thrown out...suggest new musical directions, change of name (shimmer, that is terrible, is it an msp/bis tribute band?), say you want Fatnick to sing "I R Fatnick, join my fanclub" on every number or to be your Bez type dancer...Or you could just say that you are leaving because "i don't wanna be another victim of rock'n'roll, sorry dooods"...

james, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

juyst hurt their feelings they look dumb, with guitars for bodies and hands out their heads. Just say " look this isn't working for me, I need to pursue my real dream, which is to not be in this band anymore."

DG can you help me now?

rainy, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And what can I do for you, Rainy?

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

delete my stupid photography 'youre so beautiful" thred thing?

rainy, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, it's gone.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you very much, now back to your dilemma...

rainy, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The singing guitarist likes Nick Hornby! And tells people about it! You should stick with this band until they're famous and then embarass them on live TV.

dave q, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was my advice any good DG? What instrument do you play? Why in particular do you wish to leave??

james, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why I'm in a dilemma. Evil DG activity such as Dave Q suggests is SOOOOO tempting, it really is. But anyway, I play drums, and I'd really quite like to leave because...well, you've seen the website, you've seen their 'influences', it doesn't take a genius to figure out what they must sound like...

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you pay yr dues, dg become famous and then slag the hell out of them

anthony, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, I'm not sure if they will become famous...Would they be really hurt if you just left now? Would it risk friendship?...use the excuse of not wanting to mess up the dynamics of the band by leaving further down the line.

james, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dress up a la iggy popster (in shiny pants) roll in broken glass and demand a nekkid grrrl at every practice cuz you've seen the butthole surfers do it and they are so like fekking rad. or how's about saying the mats have reformed and you are taking the place of bobster stinson?

helen fordsdale, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bands are always sacking their drummers anyhow, there is hope!

james, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More info: I have £50 to last until Nov 7th, most of which will be eaten up travelling into London for the 3 or 4 practises this week leading up to a gig on the 3rd November. If I drop out now I'll have enough money to go out and get drunksh hicsh hicsh! If I stay I'll have to play 8-beat on every bloody song, not cos I'm not capable of anything else but cos that's all you can do to their Oasisy songs.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

8-beat smells.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tell them you've discovered free jazz, then make them listen to peter brotzmann all the time and tell them that's the kind of music you want to make. a week later quit, citing creative differences.

and yes, this is why I don't have a band any more.

Dave M., Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Start spontaneously throwing parts of your drumkit at them during gigs for no apparent reason and then start giggling.

David, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the free jazz idea, or at least a variant of it. The singer dude was lecturing me last week about how good the Charlatans are, so I was tempted to play the "They're not really my thing...I'm more into EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN currently" card, that would've shocked him, hee hee.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it that hard to tell them you don't want to be in the band?

They'll respect you more yadda yadda

Ronan, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How did you end up in them anyway?

Bill, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to their gig at the end of September, and we got chatting (cos they're old associates from school) and I agreed to come to one of their practises for a laugh, and to be honest I don't remember explicitly saying I'd play their gig, you see. I'll probably go along tomorrow, and if it's OK I'll stick with them for their gig on the 3rd, then hop it. I'll be going to the Lollies party thing around 6, so I have to occupy myself between 3 and 6, so if anyone fancies going for a quick drink or something tomorrow, post here or mail me as soon as possible.

DG, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R thinking you R having knack for getting into these situations! I R thinking you should be a man! IE tell them u R having some kind of horrible illness and R unable to turn up!

Consul Fatnick, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should send Fatnick in your place.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They R already knowing me.

I R not being able to drum for toffee!

I R not liking that!, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not save this thread and post it to your band? That should do the trick, despite its ridiculousness.

David, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Get a heroin habit & pawn all their guitars & stuff! You'd be doing the world a favour!
in fact don't even do the heroin part, just pretend that's why you did it.

duane, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just imagine the looks on their faces when they roll up to the practice rm & all their shit is gone tho. Priceless! worth getting a dope habit for!

duane, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Turn up to the rehersal naked with an erection and say "I've found Jesus"

DavidM, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DG, tell them you want to go solo

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Current plan - dump them by text message, I are 90s boy.

DG, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My god, DG I was so relieved to find out the people in the photos weren't you, I would have had to reassess my fan group... I mean all cred was gone with the guitar body thing, oooh and Dr Steve floating across the screen.

I think you need to cite creative differences and then offer to mollify them by suggesting you help redesign the web site.

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can assure you the passive-aggressive approach doesn't work. Make excuses every time they call you for a practice. Don't suggest alternative dates. After three or four times they'll either give up or ask you flat out how interested you really are. They might be a little hurt but it won't be that big a deal - you've only been with them a month. They'll hate you more if you act like an asshole to get kicked out.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sent them a message saying it was nothing personal but I really would rather not be in the band anymore. And that was that, I haven't heard from them since.

DG, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry DG! ILE still likes ya!
