Mere hours after saying to Ricky T, "I'm really hard up this month, I'm not buying the Aphex Twin album" I went and bought it and more.

What was the best and worst thing you bought while intoxicated? (NB mine is not the Aphex record, I just wanted to call the thread that)

Tom, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best thing: another drink.
Worst thing: another drink.

helen fordsdale, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No more needs to be said after that post Helen

Ronan, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The worst thing? Christ knows - usually by the time I get home I've lost whatever it was I bought earlier. I did buy a Moist t-shirt at a gig they did in Tunbridge Wells many years ago which I'm not entirely proud of...or a CD by Archie Roach (alcoholic aboriginal folk singer, not my usual sound) at a Robyn Hitchcock gig that RH denies he ever did (ah, says I, but here's the evidence to prove it!)

The best thing? I make *all* my purchases while drunk (when else is there?) Possibly the Montecristo I bought at Oddbins after a heavy absinthe session at ROTA - a perfectly decadent finale to a very silly day.

ogden, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only time I was ever drunk (1992)...I threw up violently and watched England vs. Romania on a portable black and white TV. There were 44 players on each team. I talk lots of silly rubbish after a few jack daniels and coke.

Opps, didn't read the question properly! I've not bought anything whilst drunk. I'm submitting this anyway.

james, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

worst thing = puked on bed best thing = read poetry berserky at open mic night

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom you fool you could've bought the new Plan record.

Josh, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

worst = copy of cheap trick's "dream police" single which i "had to have" because it was "such a bargain." oy vey.

best = pack of bizarre turkish cigarettes which - possibly because they were actually hash or somesuch - gave me what can only be called a "spiritual epiphany," involving underdog.

inexplicable = a pair of panties. no, not from one of my avid hoez, but new, with the pricetag still on. i gave them to my friend. (but they were too big.)

jess, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I did the open-mic thing too. Then at about 4 AM that night I threw up about 10 times. This was after drinking gin and lime juice out of a small plastic bucket sounded like a good idea.

bnw, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Byron, you Bronxville decadent you.

Usually I buy rides in TAXIS. Mmmm.

suzy, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i often found myself spending money on cabs whilst drunk whilst living in nyc. there was something vaguely comforting and, yes, decadent about curling up hammered with another human being in the back of a cab going over the 59th st. bridge.

jess, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

best thing: a tofu burger from the Phoenix. worst thing: chips from the Tai Ping.

di, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was drunqk Josh but not so drunqk as to pay Tower import priceXoR. (Whereas Aphex was cheaper than the other big stores - no doubt cannier and non-midnight shopping could have got me a bargain there, or waiting six months heh). I did say to RickyT I'd come to the Plan show though, but it's the same day as the live focus group hmm.

Tom, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Byron, you Bronxville decadent you.
Okay, this spooked me until I remembered that you were an SLC girl. Getting drunqk in Bronxville = $$$. You must have taken a spin or two at the Wheel yourself, if you were around here long enough.

bnw, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, isn't the Plan record out over here yet? It was going to form a small part of the consumerist binge I have planned for today but if it's only available on import I might leave it until later.

RickyT, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anybody else feel like a bit of wanker referring to the Dismemberment Plan as the Plan? Cos I do.

RickyT, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Byron, I *never* got drunk at the bars in Bronxville; surely that was why NYC was invented? Illicit coffeehouse orgy parties, drunken neighbourhood trick-or-trating and Bacchanalia, different stories. Bronxville good for: the Bargain Box, the Hunan delivery place, Haagen- Dazs, Metro-North. I would rather have died than Wheel it.

Also there were two practical issues: having ironclad ID because the summer before I went up, Jennifer Levin was murdered and OBVIOUSLY underage clubbing killed her, and being on a huge scholarship meant I couldn't afford to go there anyway, so I saved it for going to 2A, aka the Betty Ford Clinic in Alphabet City.

Oh, and last night I bought another taxi ride, hee hee.

suzy, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just remembered to say that I did get the Dismemberment Plan album on Sunday in the end. £14 in Rough Trade cos nowhere else had it. Bit disappointing so far, though I wasn't exactly stunned with E&I when I first bought it either.

RickyT, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ricky t will be subjecting me to all his heavy metal musiX0r when i get home, chiz chiz. are i listening to the new Meret Becker thing and i've never heard of her! it's quite good.

the worst drunken purchases are invariably food or, as helen pointed out, more bouze. though i did once buy a pair of ill-advised sunglasses whilst under th'influence.

katie, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The new Plan record is much less punXor than the last one, so you don't have to worry about the nasty guitar noises. And you're gunna love the Kompakt CD and Felix The Housecat. I still haven't listened to Drukqs. I have started to be afeared of its hugeness.

RickyT, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought the Strokes album. I like it. It all sounds so warm and familiar.

james, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wot?!? It's got loads of guitar noises on it, Ricky.

Josh, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have to agree with josh on this one; i just bought it today and i love it to death already. i'm already gonna hafta rewrite the ol' top ten.

jess, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another NYC drawback is missing the last 1:30 AM Metro North back out. I once had to cab it all the way back, which ran me about 50 bucks.

bnw, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We had a solution: stay at club until last call, then away to East Village 24-hour diner for bagels and bottomless coffee, then to Grand Central for 5.30 milk train.

Or subway to 241st street, then car service or cab to SLC. Is that strange Larry Bud Melman guy at the post ofice still there?

suzy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I must be some kind of mentalist freak but I think that Drukqs is really v.good and I can't understand all these disappointed people.

Tom, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with you Tom, and I haven't even heard the album! (just 2 tracks - good enuf for me, everything else cd be crap who cares?)

best thing: small basket of blackberries.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best thing I bought while drunk was probably a fur coat, but I was not drunk, merely tipsy.

The worst was this horrible ghetto blaster that Otis convinced me to buy so he could play Turbonegro, it broke within two days, the piece of crap.
